Yellow Dock General Information
Yellow Dock is a member of the buckwheat family, and is one of about 20 species of dock. It grows abundantly throughout the United States. Ancient Indians, old time doctors, early settlers and herbal practitioners have relied heavily on the medicinal qualities of Yellow Dock. For hundreds of years Yellow Dock root and fruit was used in folk medicine as an astringent to check bleeding of the lungs, emphysema, bronchitis, asthma, women’s problems, hemorrhoids, bleeding diarrhea, and tubercular lungs. It was also used for treating diseases of the blood and liver and for venereal disease. This herb contains more iron than any other plant and contains varied amounts of phosphorus, vitamins A and C, and calcium. Yellow Dock has alterative, astringent, diuretic and laxative properties.

Yellow Dock Uses & Scientific Evidence For
Yellow Dock is used in treating conditions of the blood and glandular system and is indicated in scrofula, eruptive diseases, especially when discharges are experienced, as in running of the ears, ulcerated eyelids and skin conditions, itch, scurvy, brittle nails, etc. This herb works in treating bowel infections, peptic ulcers and is stimulates the liver and bile production. It can also help improve digestion, and reduce flatulence and distension. The root is used in treating gout, arthritis, cystitis, water retention, urinary stones and gravel. In Bello, Russia, they use the flowers for dysentery, kidney and bladder, diarrhea, stomach sickness, and the root for pain after heavy lifting. Herbalists suggest using the mineral-rich plant for cancer, leprosy, bleeding of the lungs and bowels and for rheumatic conditions. Yellow Dock works well in treating skin problems such as weeping eczema, psoriasis, nettle rash, boils and abscesses by pulling toxins out of the tissues. It has also been used to treat irregular periods, heavy bleeding and menstrual pain and fibroids in the uterus. The iron in the root can provide an excellent remedy for anemia and can help reduce debility, mental lethargy, headaches, convalescence, low spirits and irritability.

Yellow Dock Dosage Information
Yellow Dock comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. The standard dosage of this herb is 1 teaspoonful of the grated or crushed root to 1 cup of boiling water. Drink 3-4 cups daily. A syrup can be made by boiling ½ lb. of the crushed root in 1 pint of syrup and is taken in teaspoonful doses 3 or 4 times a day. Yellow Dock root can be used in poultices for skin ulcers, hard tumors, eruptive skin diseases, or you can use an ointment made with the root simmered in oil.
