QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Q:
Subject: Hi, I have had a blood lab and it was sent to the
Bowen institute labs. I believe they did a microscope to see if I have
spirochetes. My test was a high positive my doctors assistant said. I have
waited for a couple months for the results and they did not tell me until
last week. I will not be able to get into the doctor until the 15th of
August. I would like to get started on something now and the doctor gave me
some literature on lyme and cats claw that has 2 elements removed to get it
to be more effective. I understand your product of samento or cats claw is
of the kind that my family needs. I understand that this product and
colloidle silver will help us.
I feel more tired all of the time and feel I need to get started right away.
Could you tell me which one of the products you would recommend?
I am looking forward to hearing from you. Many thanks

Dear Customer,
There have been a number of cases of Lyme Disease reported where the patient used Samento or Cat's Claw (Uncaria tormentosa). This includes a former Mr. America who was initially diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 1990 and, after learning that his symptoms of Parkinson's may be related to Lyme Disease, tried Samento, and after three weeks was able to get out of his wheelchair and go fishing!

A New Use for Chromium: Helping Treat Depression
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, December 21, 2005, abstracted from “Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Exploratory Trial of Chromium Picolinate in Atypical Depression: Effect on Carbohydrate Craving” in the September 2005 issue of the Journal of Psychiatric Practice
It is estimated that 18 million Americans suffer from depression .(1) And while most research focuses on the brain’s role in depression, new research is finding that depression may also be caused by other conditions, including osteoporosis ,(2) stroke ,(3) and type 2 diabetes .(4)
It is the association between diabetes and depression that is of increased interest since a new study(5) has found that a popular diabetes supplement may also help treat depression.
After nearly two years of petitioning,(6) the FDA finally added a qualified health claim to chromium picolinate for diabetes, citing a recent study that chromium picolinate could save the health care industry between $1,636 to $5,435 per patient and lead to an overall 3-year cost savings between $3.9 billion and $52.9 billion.7
In the study, 113 patients received either 600 micrograms of chromium picolinate (CrPic) or a placebo for 8 weeks. Researchers used 2 different depression scales, called the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D-29) and the Clinical Global Impressions Improvement Scale (CGI-I) to gauge CrPic’s effectiveness on depression.
At the end of 8 weeks, researchers found that while there was no overall statistical significance in mood improvement between the 2 groups (54% in the CrPic group versus 36% placebo group), a significant difference was seen in people who had severe carbohydrate cravings. This population’s improvement in the CrPic was nearly double that of the placebo group (65% to 33%) on the following HAM-D-29 items: appetite increase, increased eating, carbohydrate craving, and level of libido.
For the researchers, “The main effect of chromium was on carbohydrate craving and appetite regulation in depressed patients and that 600 µg of elemental chromium may be beneficial for patients with atypical depression who also have severe carbohydrate craving.”

Food for "Good Bacteria" in Our Body Also Helps Strengthen Bones
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, December 21, 2005, abstracted from “A combination of prebiotic short- and long-chain inulin-type fructans enhances calcium absorption and bone mineralization in young adolescents” in the August 2005 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
Thanks to increased awareness, the health benefits of probiotics , the “good bacteria” in our body, are becoming well known. In addition to helping prevent ulcers (1) and stomach cancer in men,(2) probiotics may also help prevent colon cancer(3) and inflammatory bowel disease.(4) The recommended dosage for probiotics is 4-8 million organisms per day, which can easily be found in a one-half teaspoon of a probiotic supplement.(5)
But what many people do not know is that probiotics need food, called prebiotics, to stay alive and keep us healthy. One such prebiotic is inulin, a sugar (fructose) found in a number of vegetables and plants including wheat, onion, bananas, garlic and chicory. It is estimated that Americans consume 1–4 g of inulin and oligofructose per day.(6)
Now a new study(7) has found that getting your inulin will not only keep your probiotic bacteria well-fed and healthy, it may also increase the strength of bones in teenagers.
Calcium and magnesium are two of the most important minerals needed by teenagers to help achieve optimum bone mass by their late teen years. It has been suggested that teenagers need at least 1000-1300 mg per day of calcium for proper development(8) and that calcium and magnesium need to be in a 2:1 ratio for optimal bone development.(9)
In the study, researchers gave pubertal adolescents either 8 grams per day of a mixed prebiotics consisting of inulin fructans or a sugar placebo for one year. Researchers measured bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) at the beginning of the study, 8 weeks into the study, and at the end of the study.
Researchers found that not only was calcium absorption “significantly greater” in the fructan group than in the control group at 8 weeks and one year, but the fructan group had a greater increase in both BMC and BMD than did the control group after one year. Unfortunately, the researchers did not propose a mechanism for how the prebiotics improved calcium absorption.
For the researchers, “Daily consumption of a combination of prebiotic short- and long-chain inulin-type fructans significantly increases calcium absorption and enhances bone mineralization during pubertal growth.”

Study Finds B-Vitamins Useful in Stroke Prevention
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, December 9, 2005, abstracted from “Vitamin Intervention For Stroke Prevention trial: an efficacy analysis” in the November 2005 issue of Stroke
Every year in the U.S., there are 700,000 new cases of stroke . As the third leading cause of death in the U.S. behind cancer and heart disease, stroke causes more serious long-term disabilities than any other disease. Nearly three out of every four strokes occur in people over the age of 65. For each decade after the age of 55, your risk of stroke doubles.(1)
Since high blood pressure , diabetes, physical inactivity, and smoking are a few of the many risk factors for stroke,(2) a lot can be done to prevent stroke. Of particular interest is paying attention to homocysteine (Hcy) levels in the body. Research has found that people with high Hcy levels are nine times more likely to have a stroke than those with regular Hcy levels.(3)
Fortunately, nutrition supplementation is very effective in helping decrease Hcy levels.(4) Now a new study(5) has found that decreasing Hcy levels through vitamin supplementation will also decrease your risk of stroke.
In the study, researchers conducted the Vitamin Intervention for Stroke Prevention (VISP) trial in over 2,100 patients. Their objective was to find out whether high-dose daily vitamin supplementation significantly reduced stroke, heart attack, or death from either condition compared to low-dose supplementation. High-dose daily supplementation was 2.5 mg folic acid , 25 mg B6, and 400 micrograms of B12. Low-dose supplementation was 20 micrograms folic acid, 200 micrograms B6, and 6 micrograms B12. Researchers found that there was a 21% reduction in the risk of stroke, heart attack, or death from either condition in the high-dose group compared with the low-dose group. Of particular interest was vitamin B12 , where Hcy was found to increase “significantly” as B12 levels in the body fell. These results led the researchers to conclude that folic acid and vitamin B12 play “key roles” in managing Hcy levels and can therefore decrease your risk for stroke, heart attack, and death from either condition. Flaxseed Oil: A Dependable Source of Omega-3 Fatty Acids
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, December 22, 2005, abstracted from “Flaxseed Oil Increases the Plasma Concentrations of Cardioprotective (n-3) Fatty Acids in Humans” in the January 2006 issue of the Journal of Nutrition
It’s no secret how important omega-3 fatty acids are to your health. The ability of omega-3 fatty acids to decrease the inflammation that leads to heart disease ,(1) stroke,(2) and atherosclerosis(3) resulted in the issuance of a health claim by the FDA for omega-3 fatty acids in the fight against heart disease.(4)
There are two types of omega-3 fatty acids: ALA (flaxseed oil) and EPA (fish oil). However, ALA must be converted to EPA before it can be used in the body. Unfortunately, this process has been found to be very inefficient.(5) It is this inefficient conversion that, even though flaxseed possesses anti-cancer properties,(6) has caused its role in heart health to be unproven.(7) Therefore, it is recommended that taking fish oil is the only way to adequately get your Omega-3 fatty acids.
Now a new study(6) has found that flaxseed oil may indeed provide you with enough Omega-3 fatty acids. In the study, participants were given either 3 grams of ALA per day (31 participants) or olive oil placebo capsules (25 participants) for twelve weeks. The researchers proceeded to measure blood levels of EPA and DHA to assess the efficiency of the ALA conversion to EPA or DHA.
At the end of the study, researchers found that plasma EPA levels increased by 60% in the flaxseed group compared to the placebo group, where no change occurred.
Although DHA levels did not change in either group, the researchers concluded that “This study demonstrates the efficacy of the conversion of ALA to EPA” and that “ALA may be an alternative to fish oil.”

Green Tea: Offering Hope Against Leukemia
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, December 23, 2005, abstracted from “Clinical effects of oral green tea extracts in four patients with low grade B-cell malignancies” posted on the Leukemia Research website ahead of print
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) is the most common form of leukemia in the United States with 17,000 new cases diagnosed each year.(1) Unfortunately, CLL is incurable with current treatments and patients are often managed with a policy of “watchful waiting”.(2) Now a new study(3) has offered some hope for patients with CLL: Green Tea .
Green Tea’s ability to help fight cancer is thought to be due to a number of different mechanisms, including helping prevent blood flow to the tumors,(4) damaging cancer cell DNA,(5) and inhibiting an enzyme and lengthens the life of cancer cells.(6)
Building upon previous research showing that EGCG, an antioxidant found in green tea, induces cell death in cells from CLL patients,(7) researchers highlighted four different cases of patient improvement with Green Tea.
Each patient took on average between 300 and 1000mg of green tea polyphenols per day for one year. All patients not only experienced “significant” decreases in the size of their lymph nodes but all have continued taking the green tea polyphenols and have not needed conventional treatment for their leukemia.
Although this study highlighted only four patients, the researchers concluded “food products that contain polyphenols have anti-[cancer] activity” and that “polyphenol containing agents have not only been shown to have anti-tumor activity but have been linked to [cancer] prevention of human tumors.”
