Have you tried nature’s herbal infection-fighter? Grapefruit Seed Extract is safe with no side effects and it has dozens of additonal healthy benefits. It has a strong anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. Antibiotics and over-the-counter decongestants are widely used to treat chronic sinusitis. In most cases, antibiotics are not effective for chronic sinusitis because they target bacteria, not fungi. The over-the-counter drugs may offer some relief of symptoms, but they have no effect on the inflammation. Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE), is a wonderful herbal infection-fighter, which was first used by farmers to inhibit the growth of mold on their equipment. Later, cosmetic companies used it in their products as a preservative. In the early 1980s, claims that GSE could fight infections in people promoted interest within the dietary supplement industry, and GSE products started to appear in health-food stores. Grapefruit Seed has been used primarily as a treatment for vaginal yeast infections caused by Candida, and the intestinal condition, Candida Overgrowth Syndrome, but it is also used to kill strep, staph, salmonella, E. coli, influenza, parasites, herpes, fungi and traveler's diarrhea. Many forms of skin disorders such as dermatitis, poison oak, poison ivy, and cysts are being effectively treated with Grapefruit Seed Extract. Although doctors recommend GSE capsules, liquids, and powders for bacterial, viral, and fungal infections, including Candida Overgrowth Syndrome, there is no complete scientific research to indicate GSE can actually eliminate any infection in human beings. Current Event News: Do you have the time for 3-4 days in BED? Didn’t think so, that is why we love to introduce: Sambucol . Every year at this time the panic sets in on where is the flu and when is it going to hit me? While some get there flu shots and hibernate others are actually taking their measures at preventing such illnesses all year long by the daily use of sambucol. Some clinicians believe that Elder is more effective at shortening colds and flu than echinacea. Preliminary studies with a certain strain of epidemic flu has shown that Elderberry extract reduced recovery time by half. It is now being studied for its effectiveness against other viral infections, including HIV and herpes. Elder works well in treating all conditions where there is a buildup of phlegm such as asthma, bronchitis, colds, and the buildup of phlegm caused by inhaling second-hand smoke. The flowers are used to treat tonsillitis, sinusitis, hay fever, laryngitis, achy sore throat, chills, restlessness and fever. They can also stimulate circulation and promote sweating. Soy Found to Help Decrease Blood Clotting
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, September 11, 2006, abstracted from Soy isoflavones affect platelet thromboxane A2 receptor density but not plasma lipids in menopausal women” in the June 20, 2006 issue of Maturitas
Soy has started to gain a reputation as a panacea for health problems in menopausal and postmenopausal women. It has been found to elicit a number of health benefits, including helping boost brain function and mood(1) and helping maintain heart,(2) bone(3) and breast cell health.(4) Now a new study(5) has discovered yet another health benefit of soy: helping decrease blood clotting by helping control inflammation.
In the study, 29 healthy postmenopausal women were given either 100 mg per day of a soy isoflavone supplement or placebo for 12 weeks. The many blood measurements taken by the researchers at the beginning and end of the study included blood pressure, soy isoflavone levels, total and HDL cholesterol, and blood sugar. Researchers also measured levels of an inflammatory protein that helps clot the blood called TA2.(6)
They found that while a number of the measurements did not differ between the groups, including blood pressure and body mass index, TA2 levels “significantly declined” in the soy group while “remaining mostly unchanged” in the placebo group. Finally, they found that the increased soy isoflavone levels correlated with a lower the level of TA2.
For the researchers, “we demonstrated that the beneficial effects of isoflavones in menopausal women could be more related to [blood clotting] than to improving classical cardiovascular risk factors.”

Cranberry Juice Shows Effectiveness Against Common Disease Bacterium
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, September 12, 2006, abstracted from “Role of cranberry juice on molecular-scale surface characteristics and adhesion behavior of Escherichia coli” in the February 2006 issue of Biotechnology and Bioengineering
Cranberry juice has been used since 1620 by Native Americans and in Western Medicine for more than 200 years(1) as an amazingly simple way to help deal with urinary tract infections (UTI). This condition affects 8 million people per year(2) and has incurred a cost of $25.5 billion in antibiotic prescriptions over the past 20 years.(3)
When looking at the causes of UTI’s, 80% are caused by a single bacterium called E. Coli.(4) Combine that with the fact that UTI’s frequently recur and cause patients to develop resistance to antibiotics,(5) cranberry juice’s usefulness becomes even more important. While previous studies have found 300 mL of cranberry juice per day for 6 months to “significantly reduce” UTI’s in elderly women,(6) little research has been done on just why cranberry juice is so effective for UTI’s.
Now a new study(7) has found that cranberry juice’s effectiveness for UTI’s is not by killing E. Coli bacteria but by helping prevent them from attaching to the walls of the digestive tract in the body.
In the study, researchers examined the effects of cranberry juice on two types of E. Coli. They submerged bacteria-coated glass slides in ultrapure water containing 5%, 10%, or 20% of cranberry juice for three hours. At the end of three hours the researchers used atomic force microscopy to measure the pull-off strength of the bacteria on the slides to assess the effectiveness of cranberry juice.
They found that after only three hours, cranberry juice directly affected the bacteria by altering its shape and resulted in an inability to continue binding to the glass. So while the bacteria were not killed by the cranberry juice, they were far less able to bind to the surfaces. When looking at cranberry juice’s role in UTI’s, cranberry juice helps prevent E. Coli from binding to the walls of the bladder.
For the researchers, “Our results demonstrate molecular-level changes in the surfaces of E. coli upon exposure to neutralized cranberry juice.”

Psyllium and Plant Sterols Found to Help Keep LDL Cholesterol Within Normal Range
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, September 20, 2006, abstracted from “A Combination Therapy Including Psyllium and Plant Sterols Lowers LDL Cholesterol by Modifying Lipoprotein Metabolism in Hypercholesterolemic Individuals” in the issue of the Journal of Nutrition
According to the American Heart Association, the differences between HDL and LDL cholesterol is that while HDL carries cholesterol from the arteries to the liver and is passed out of the body (thus slowing artery plaque buildup), LDL cholesterol stays and builds up in the arteries that feed the heart and brain, forming the plaque that leads to atherosclerosis. The current recommendations are to have your HDL cholesterol over 40 mg/dL and your LDL cholesterol under 130 mg/dL.(1)
When it comes to nutrition as a way to help keep you LDL cholesterol in normal range, two foods found to be effective are psyllium in the amount of 15 grams per day(2) and plant sterols in the amount of 1.8 grams per day.(3) Now a new study(4) has found that combining these two foods together are also effective in helping keep your LDL cholesterol within normal range.
In the study, 33 healthy individuals aged 35–65 years with LDL cholesterol levels between 100 and 160 mg/dL received either cookies containing 7.68 grams per day of psyllium and 2.6 grams per day of plant sterols or placebo cookies for four weeks. At the end of four weeks, the researchers waited three weeks before switching treatments for another four weeks.
At the end of the study, researchers found that total cholesterol levels were “significantly reduced” in the psyllium and plant sterol group and “these reductions were primarily in the LDL [cholesterol] group”.
After citing research showing LDL particles to be associated with an increased risk of heart disease , the researchers concluded “that [psyllium and plant sterol supplementation] resulted in a [decreased heart disease risk].”

Simple Safeguards for Winter Wellness
By Jayson Kroner, co-author of 7-Syndrome Healing
I’ve noticed a trend. Very few people, at least those who reside in cold weather climates, seem to rank winter high on their list of seasonal favorites. Now, this could easily be attributed to the snow, the icy roads, or the arctic winds that blow in a constant reminder of Mother Nature’s seasonal authority. Or it might have a little something to do with the tens of millions of individuals who fall victim to cold and flu symptoms. It’s been estimated that approximately 10 to 20 percent of the US population fall into this category, with even more individuals suffering from symptoms that never get reported. To further complicate things, many experts believe that this year’s season could be one of the worst on record. By now, it’s highly unlikely that any good television-watching American has been able to duck the rumors of a potential pandemic, as well as the horror stories of what a worldwide flu outbreak could mean to our global population. At the time of this writing, things seem to have found a calm. But that doesn’t erase the fact that this could change without warning. Should things take a turn for the worst, it will become essential for all of us to look at our immune system with a completely new set of eyes. A solid understanding of today’s most effective immune system support supplements is a great place to start. Let’s explore. Antioxidants In light of how grossly overused and misunderstood the term “antioxidant” is, there’s simply no mistaking the role that these free radical fighters play in human health. Better still, there are plenty for you to choose from. Nutrients such as vitamins A , E and C , as well as other constituents, such as Alpha Lipoic Acid , CoQ10, Grape Seed extract , Green Tea extract , Lycopene , Astaxanthin and others work by targeting unstable chemicals within the body, and neutralizing them before they can further damage cells.(1) This is especially important during cold winter months, a time when the body’s natural defense mechanisms are forced to work harder than ever. Olive Leaf Leaves from the Olive tree are loaded with a number of cell-supporting compounds that have been shown in studies to help sustain the immune system against environmental stress. One of the most scientifically significant is oleuropein—a class of high-powered phytochemicals that is naturally rich in one of the immune system’s most welcome winter inhabitants, elenolic acid. By assisting the body in warding off many of the stresses that send the digestive and immune systems into a full-blown defensive frenzy, the compounds in Olive leaf have been shown to help with fatigue, excess yeast proliferation, cholesterol oxidation and environmental stress response.(2, 3) Probiotics Supplement-savvy individuals may associate the term probiotics with digestive integrity, but there’s more to these helpful bacteria than just a good gut. Probiotics, including acidophilus , bifidus , and others, play an important role in the immune system’s day-to-day operations.(4) Aside from populating the gastrointestinal tract with the beneficial bacteria we need to digest food, stay regular and ward off pathogenic invaders, there’s now good evidence suggesting that probiotics can strengthen the immune system by increasing the production of T-cells, NK-cells (natural killer), and other immune system catalysts.(5, 6) Some studies have demonstrated their ability to support healthy respiratory function, as well as their influence on maintaining the body’s natural inflammatory response.(7) Any way you look at it, probiotics are an absolute essential for both seasonal and year-round wellness. Medicinal Mushrooms Known for their unmistakable role in kitchens worldwide, mushrooms such as Shiitake have been consumed for centuries as a way to support good health. What we know now is that these mushrooms, including Reishi and Reishi , boast high concentrations of 1,3 beta-glucans , natural food compounds that are almost non-existent in today’s overprocessed modern diet. From a cellular perspective, the 1,3 form of beta-glucans is used by the body to help support innate and adaptive immune system function.(8) Look for a formula that delivers an organic mushroom blend of at least 150-200 mg, utilizing the Shiitake, Maitake and Reishi species as well as others, if applicable. When it comes to staying healthy this winter, a little common sense can also be a great help to staying healthy. Eat smart, dress warm, and pay close attention to what you’re exposed to. Find a support supplement that works for you, and always consult your doctor if you’re taking medications. If you were sick last season, make sure that your winter garb has been thoroughly washed before you put it back on. Keep a hand sanitizer within arm’s reach, and remember to wash your hands thoroughly throughout the day. These measures, coupled with the right diet and knowledge of what you can do to support your immune system, just might make a world of difference. New Study Finds Vitamin D Supplementation May Be Necessary for Kids
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, September 25, 2006, abstracted from “Vitamin D deficiency: primary or tertiary prevention?” in the August 2006 issue of Archives of Diseases in Childhood
Vitamin D is found in foods like cod liver oil and fortified milk(1) and can be made in your body after exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun.(2) It helps maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus that help form and maintain strong bones.(3) Because these properties of vitamin D help prevent rickets in children(4), research has found that rickets can easily be prevented with 400 IU of vitamin D per day.(5)
Now a new study(6) has found that many children do not get enough vitamin D. Supplementation is needed for them to get adequate vitamin D to help ensure proper bone development and help protect against a number of other diseases later on in life.
In the study, researchers identified 17 cases of vitamin D deficiency in a hospital from 1994-2005. They found that children in the UK, especially children of Asian origin, are becoming a high risk group for rickets , with 1 in 923 children and 1 in 117 Asian children now at risk. A significant cause of this increased risk, according to the researchers, was the UK’s stopping of vitamin D supplementation in infants between 2000 and 2005.(7) And because “[vitamin D deficiency] has been linked to an increased risk for multiple sclerosis, some cancers , cardiovascular disease , diabetes , osteoporosis , and mental illness”,(8-11) supplementing children with vitamin D early in life can have far-reaching health benefits later in life.
For the researchers, “we propose that local health authorities provide funds to supplement all Asian children with [about 300 IU per day] of vitamin D for at least the first two years of their lives.”
