General Vaginitis Information
Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina. Vaginitis is common and is responsible for an estimated 10% of all visits by women to their healthcare practitioners.

There are three types of vaginitis:
Hormone-related vaginitis includes the atrophic vaginitis generally found in postmenopausal or postpartum women, women who have had their ovaries surgically removed and prepubescent girls.
Irritant vaginitis is the result of poor hygiene, allergies or tight, non-porous clothing can also contribute to vaginitis.
Infectious vaginitis is most common in reproductive-age women and is generally caused by trichomonas, gonococci or other sexually transmitted organisms.

Possible Causes of Vaginitis
Vaginitis is caused by bacterial or fungal infection, vitamin B deficiency, irritation from excessive douching or use of products like perfumed soaps or deodorant sprays. Additional predisposing factors include the use of antibiotics, oral contraceptives or adrenal corticosteroids.

Possible Symptoms of Vaginitis
The symptoms of vaginitis vary depending on the cause. Symptoms of hormone-related vaginitis include vaginal dryness, irritation, thinning of the vaginal mucous membranes and painful intercourse. Symptoms of irritant vaginitis include itching and soreness. Infectious vaginitis creates itching and typically includes vaginal discharge that varies in color, consistency and odor depending upon the infectious organism. Symptoms are often worse immediately after intercourse or the menstrual period. A healthcare professional should be consulted for the diagnosis and treatment of any vaginal infection.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Vaginitis
Food intake can contribute to vaginitis, so it is beneficial to be aware of foods eaten when vaginitis flares up. Don’t wear tight fitting pants and wear cotton panties whenever possible. Do not use perfumed soaps, lubricants and spermicides if vaginitis is a problem.
