    QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

    Q:
    Subject: Hello
Hi I have an uterine fibroid of 7cm x 6 cm. Many doctors have advised me to have it removed as well as the womb. I do not feel pain nor have unusual heavy menstruation but only very slight low blood. Have been taking iron once a day but has since stopped for some time already.
I would like to know whether Kyolic odourless garlic can help shrink uterine fibroid of this size. I am currently taking cod liver oil, omega 3 oil, mutli-vitamin, pine bark and cranberry capsules (had urinary tract infection previously).
Why does diabetics have to discuss with their doctors before taking garlic products?

    Many thanks

    A:
    Dear Customer,
While Garlic is know inhibit tumor growth here are two time honored products to aid in supporting proper functioning of the Uterus and Ovaries as well: Ovary and Uterus Clean and U O Clear ( Ovarian Cyst & Fibroid Support ) .
Garlic is on the FDA’s “generally recognized as safe” list. The only common complaint in using this herb is unpleasant breath odor. Taking raw garlic in excessive doses can cause stomach upset, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, facial flushing, rapid pulse, and insomnia. Topical Garlic can cause skin irritations that can become severe, so caution should be used when applying to skin. Garlic thins the blood so it is suggested you not take it prior to having a surgery, or while going into labor and delivery. It should not be taken with blood thinning drugs such as Coumadin (warfarin), heparin, aspirin, or Trental. Garlic could interact with natural products with blood thinning properties as well, such as Ginkgo and high dose vitamin E. It is presumed to be safe for pregnant women, except before delivery, and safe for nursing mothers.
    All my best,

Thank you for your interest in Herbal Remedies.com and the opportunity to serve you. Heather

Black Tea Found to Aid in Battling Stress

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, October 10, 2006, abstracted from “The effects of tea on psychophysiological stress responsivity and post-stress recovery: a randomised double-blind trial” printed online September 30, 2006 in the Journal of Psychopharmacology

Although green tea is regarded as the tea with the most health benefits, research has started to focus significantly on black tea , due to its properties that help enhance mood,(1) maintain alertness over the day,(2) and even promote heart health.(3) In fact, recent reviews have found that black tea’s health benefits are comparable to green tea .(4)

Now a new study(5) has found more benefits of black tea on mood, which may help people better deal with stress .

Building upon previous research showing teas effects on the nervous system(6) including brain function,(7) 75 healthy non-smoking men were withdrawn from drinking tea, coffee and caffeinated beverages for four weeks. Following this “washout” phase, they were given either a treatment of tea or placebo for six weeks. The daily tea treatment consisted of a total 1,050 mg of black tea and was the equivalent of drinking four cups of black tea per day. They then underwent tests for stress that included measurements of cortisol, blood clotting and completion of behavioral tasks.

At the end of six weeks, while they found that increases in blood pressure and heart rate did not differ between the two groups after the tasks. Blood clotting and cortisol levels were significantly lower and feelings of relaxation were significantly higher after the tasks in the tea group compared to the placebo group.

For the researchers, “tea consumption leads to lower post-stress cortisol and greater subjective relaxation, together with reduced platelet activation. Black tea may have health benefits in part by aiding stress recovery.” These results are the latest in a number of studies on the health benefits of tea and the catechin EGCG. Studies on green tea and Alzheimer Disease were reported in 2005(8) and 2006.(9)

Survey Finds Use of Supplements is More Than Double That of Prescription Drugs for Weight Loss

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, November 8, 2006, abstracted from “First of Its Kind National Survey Finds Misinformed Consumers Rely on Unproven Weight Loss Products” posted October 22, 2006 on the University of Connecticut’s Center for Survey Research & Analysis website

Determined by the World Health Organization to cause 2.6 million deaths worldwide in 2000, obesity is now classified as a “global phenomenon”.(1) According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), 17% of teenagers are overweight, 32% of adults are obese, and 66.3% of adults are overweight or obese. Statistics like these have caused the CDC to institute a program that will attempt to reduce the prevalence of obesity to less than 15% by 2010.(2)

Now a new survey of 3,500 Americans conducted by the University of Connecticut's Center for Survey Research & Analysis(3) has found that Americans choose nutritional supplements for weight loss over prescription drugs by a more than 2-to-1 margin.

The survey, conducted nationwide from November 2005 to January 2006, found that more than 90% of self-identified overweight or obese American adults recognize the health benefits of losing weight and that being overweight increases their risk of disease. In spite of this, less than 1 in 3 of those surveyed consulted their doctor as a resource in the attempt to lose weight.

Regarding the use of weight loss aids, only 15% used FDA-approved treatments while more than twice as many (34%) used potentially unproven weight loss products. While the researchers found it “encouraging that so many patients realize the importance of losing weight as part of a healthy lifestyle…it seems that they're lacking accurate information on the best programs and products to help them achieve their weight loss goals."

As a result, it is more important than ever for patients to receive accurate information regarding what weight loss products and nutritional lifestyle changes are effective. Fortunately, research has found dietary lifestyle changes including following the Mediterranean Diet(4) and increasing protein intake(5) (which helps you lose weight because it helps regulate hunger hormones(6) as well nutritional supplementation such as conjugated linoleic acid ,(7) apple cider vinegar (8) and Relora (9) can be very effective in helping patients with being overweight or obese.

Winding the Body’s Seasonal Timeclock

By Jayson Kroner, co-author, “7-Syndrome Healing”

There is an unmistakable catharsis in the seasonal shift that takes place this time of year, as the trees that shade us begin to shed their summer skin. For many, including yours truly, this transformation is what essentially makes autumn such a great time to be alive. But these leaves of brown and orange and yellow should serve as a reminder that, come late fall, our bodies embark on a series of changes, as well. Because like the foliage that surrounds us, we too are at the mercy of Mother Nature’s schedule.

If you’ve made your home in a region of the country apt to drastic changes in temperature, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Within a matter of weeks, often days, we collectively swap our shorts and flip flops with a fantastic spectacle of gloves and hats and jackets. We do this completely at will—wasting little time in debate over whether or not we match, but rather honing in on how warm our body will need to be. This in itself is fascinating, especially when you consider that, by and large, we do very little to bundle up our biological selves at the first hint of plummeting mercury.

But we should, because as it turns out, the combination of cold weather and a shy, lazy sun affects more than just our skin. Seasonal temperature changes can have a strong negative impact on many of the body’s major systems. Left unchecked, we leave our systems vulnerable to a number of health-related hurdles. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most common seasonal challenges, and their respective supporting supplements.

Mood

The combination of shorter days, frigid temperatures and fast approaching holidays can take a serious toll on even the most grounded of mind. Additionally, accepting the fact that one must instantly limit, possibly even eliminate, many of their outdoor activities can be a hard pill to swallow. This, along with a seemingly unlimited number of other factors, can make for a melancholy seasonal transition. Fortunately, there are a number of dietary supplements and herbs that have been shown in studies to help support a positive mood. Some of the most popular include GABA , St. John’s Wort , Relora ® , Rhodiola and 5-HTP . (1-5)

Immune System

Of all the bodily systems affected most by seasonal change, the immune system clearly takes one of the hardest hits. More time spent indoors, less fresh air, drastic reductions in aerobic activity, poor diets and offices teeming with sick co-workers can send a healthy summer immune system into a full blown winter defense frenzy. And while there’s no definitive way to completely get around these hurdles, there are measures that can be taken to keep your immune system in check. Antioxidants , such as Vitamins A , C , and E , Alpha Lipoic Acid , Grape Seed and CoQ10 all have wonderful science-based reputations for supporting healthy cellular activity, and can serve as a sound adjunct to any winter wellness regimen.(6-9) One of my favorites is Air Defense, a comprehensive immune support formula that contains Paractin® along with several supporting herbs and nutrients.

Skin

The cold wind of winter can dry out even the healthiest of skin. And while topical lotions may offer some limited protection, we can’t forget that our skin is more than just a protective coating—it’s the largest organ in the body. In short, healthy skin depends greatly on a constant supply of vital nutrients. In addition to the many antioxidants that are currently available, supplements such as Borage Oil , Selenium , Zinc , and Green Tea have all been shown to help encourage epidermal health. (10-13)

Weight Gain

The holidays just seem to have a historical penchant for wreaking havoc on waistlines, year in and year out. Much of this has to do with our chronic ability to tell ourselves that it’s okay to splurge, and that we will lose this rotten weight when the time is called upon. Sadly, that call seldom comes. As a result, we end up carrying a few extra pounds into the New Year. One of the best ways around this is to nourish our digestive systems with the same level of reverence that we nourish our bellies. Taking digestive enzymes and probiotics with meals is an excellent place to start. Together, they assist the body in properly breaking down larger meals while populating the GI tract with friendly, beneficial bacteria.(14, 15) Additionally, adding a quality fiber such as Psyllium or Glucomannan can help maintain regularity, which in turn helps support healthy serum and lipid levels. (16, 17)

Energy and Fatigue

Let’s face it—winter is not the most motivating of seasons. That powerful urge to rent DVD’s, order delivery food and retreat to our sofas is one that we’re all guilty of. Making a habit out of it, however, can rob the body of energy, motivation and the urge to stay physically active. It is times like these when we need to make absolutely sure that we’re getting the basic nutrients needed to plug any nutritional gaps in our diet. A high potency multiple vitamin and mineral formula is especially important, as are essential fatty acids such as Omega-3 Fish Oil and Flax Seed Oil . (18)

Of course, these are just few suggestions to keep in mind as the winter months approach. Good health and sound living know no season, and should serve as the foundation upon which we live now, and all year long. The jump from summer to winter comes fast, often without any sign of warning or forethought. Dress warm, eat right and do whatever is in your power to avoid contact with germs and under-the-weather colleagues. Because who knows, with the right mix of knowledge and preparation, there’s just no excuse not to enjoy the most “wonderful” time of the year.

Study Examines Vitamin D Blood Levels and Breast Cancer

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, October 17, 2006, abstracted from Serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D levels in early and advanced breast cancer” printed online in the Journal of Clinical Pathology

In 2006, the American Cancer Society is expecting that nearly 213, 000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed and will cause nearly 41,000 deaths.(1) Fortunately, a number of foods, supplements, and lifestyle changes have been found to help women, including soy ,(2) fish oil ,(3) sesame ,(4) curcumin ,(5) and exercise.(6) Vitamin D has been found to help bone health,(7) gum health,(8) and even help control blood sugar.(9) Now a new study(10) has found an association between vitamin D levels and breast cancer.

In the study, researchers took blood samples from 279 caucasian women with invasive breast cancer, 204 with early stage malignancy and 75 with locally advanced or metastatic disease and measured vitamin D levels. They found that patients with early stage breast cancer had “significantly higher circulating levels” of vitamin D levels compared to those with advanced disease. These results led the researchers to conclude that “[blood] levels of [vitamin D] are significantly higher in patients with early stage breast cancer compared to those with locally advanced and/or metastatic disease.”

Because vitamin D intake was not measured, recommendations on vitamin D supplementation for women with regards to breast cancer could not be made. Current recommendations for vitamin D supplementation range as high as 600 IU per day.(11)

Grape Seed Extract Found to Help Maintain Colon Health

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, October 30, 2006, abstracted from “Grape Seed Extract Inhibits In vitro and In vivo Growth of Human Colorectal Carcinoma Cells” in the October 15, 2006 issue of Clinical Cancer Research

As the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, the American Cancer Society estimates 145,290 new cases of colon cancer and 56,290 deaths from colon cancer occurred in 2005.(1) What most people don’t know is that colon cancer takes a long time to progress from benign to malignant, so there is “a much needed opportunity” to employ health care strategies in the form of health screenings and vitamin supplementation.(2)

The list of foods and supplements that can help maintain colon health includes: 30-35 grams of fiber per day,(3) 15 micrograms of broccoli extract per day,(4) olive oil,(5) 400 mg of calcium per day,(6) Conjugated Linoleic Acid ,(7) 9 mg of vitamin B6 per day,(8) more than 30 mg of flavonoids per day(9) and 480 mg of curcumin and 20 mg of quercetin 3 times a day.(10)

Now a new study11 has found that grape seed extract (GSE) , of which 300 mg per day has recently been found to help curb a worldwide high blood pressure epidemic,(12) may also help maintain colon health.

In the study, researchers exposed colorectal cancer cells to 25, 50, and 100 micrograms per milliliter of GSE in a lab setting. They found that in as little as 12 hours the three GSE dosages decreased cancer cell levels by 11%, 27%, and 48%, respectively. By 48 hours, there was as much as an 85% decrease.

The researchers found that the higher the dosage, the greater the effect on the colorectal cancer cells. The researchers also found that GSE exerted this effect by stopping replication of the cancer cells, thereby theoretically stopping the cancer cells from spreading in humans.

For the researchers, ‘GSE may be an effective [preventive] agent against colorectal cancer.”
