An allergy is a response by the body’s immune system to a substance that is not usually considered harmful. When a person has an allergic response, the immune system identifies the substance (allergen) as an invader and the white blood cells begin to attack it. Since the white blood cells cause more damage to the body instead of helping it, the allergic response becomes a disease in itself. Almost any substance can act as an allergen. Vitamin K Found to Help Skin Health
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, May 13, 2008, abstracted from “Matrix GLA protein is involved in elastic fiber calcification in the dermis of pseudoxanthoma elasticum patients” in the October 2007 issue of Laboratory Investigation
Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is an inherited disorder that causes severe wrinkling of the skin and also affects the eyes, cardiovascular and digestive systems. It induces wrinkles on the skin and in the body by causing elastic tissue to become filled with calcium and other minerals (1).
Plastic surgery and laser treatments are prescribed methods of dealing with the skin-wrinkling effects of PXE(2). Now a new study(3) has found that vitamin K , normally associated with joint health ( 4), blood clotting (5) and blood vessel health (6), may also help patients with PXE improve overall skin health by helping maintain function of a protein called Matrix GLA protein (MGP). MGP is dependent on vitamin K for proper function(7) and plays “a well-recognized role” in preventing mineralization of connective tissues(8).
Previous research showed that a genetic defect in vitamin K recycling increases wrinkle formation through elastic fiber calcification(9). Building on these findings, researchers drew blood and acquired skin samples from 30 patients without PXE and 30 patients with PXE. The researchers found that patients with PXE had MGP levels that were 29% lower than patients without PXE. They also found that a form of MGP associated with healthy skin (called Gla-MGP) was “nearly absent” from patients with PXE.
For the researchers, “[MGP] may have a role in preventing elastic fiber calcification” and help maintain overall skin health. And because of vitamin K’s “fundamental importance” in preventing tissue calcification of skin fibers similar to those in PXE, vitamin K would seem to play an important role in overall skin health and wrinkles.

Vitamin D Shown to Help Mental Health
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, May 7, 2008, abstracted from “Depression Is Associated With Decreased 25-Hydroxyvitamin D and Increased Parathyroid Hormone Levels in Older Adults” in the May 2008 issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry
Recent research has found that 13% of adults over 55 years of age suffer from “significant depressive symptoms”(1) which play a prominent role in illness and death in these patients(2).
While depression costs employers $51 billion each year in absenteeism and lost productivity (not including high medical and pharmaceutical bills)(3), elderly people with depression have roughly 50% higher health care costs than non-depressed seniors and costs our healthcare system nearly $22 billion a year(4).
Researchers have started to look at the changing lifestyle habits of aging adults, including decreased sun exposure due to decreased outdoor activity, different housing or clothing habits, and decreased vitamin intake (5), all of which may result in decreased vitamin D blood levels.
Vitamin D is thought to play a role in mental health and depression because low vitamin D blood levels lead to an increase in parathyroid hormone (PTH). High PTH levels have been found to be accompanied by depressive disorders, which usually abate once the PTH levels are brought down(6, 7). Now a new study(8) has added support to the role of vitamin D blood levels in mental health.
In The Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam(9), 1282 men and women between 55 and 85 completed questionnaires on lifestyle and diet. They also provided blood samples, which were used to measure vitamin D blood levels. While nearly 39% of the men and nearly 57% of the women had “insufficient” blood levels of vitamin D (< 20 ng/mL), the researchers found that patients with minor depressive and major depressive symptoms had vitamin D blood levels 14% lower (19 ng/mL) than patients without any depressive symptoms (22 ng/mL).
Regarding PTH levels, patients with minor depression had PTH levels that were 5% higher than non-depressed patients and 33% higher in patients with major depression.
For the researchers, “depression and depression severity…is strongly associated with lower [vitamin D blood levels] and higher PTH levels, even after adjustment for age, sex, BMI, smoking status, health status, level of physical activity, and level of urbanization.”

Pycnogenol® Found to Help Joint Health
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, May 7, 2008, abstracted from “Treatment of osteoarthritis with Pycnogenol®. The SVOS (San Valentino osteo-arthrosis study). evaluation of signs, symptoms, physical performance and vascular aspects” in the April 2008 issue of Phytotherapy Research
Research continues to shine more light on the diverse health benefits of Pycnogenol ®. These benefits include helping deal with lower leg swelling(1), being effective for venous ulcers(2), showing to be comparable to prescription drugs for helping venous leg circulation(3), and benefiting both mental health (4) and healthy levels of inflammation (5). The ways that Pycnogenol® can improve your health just keep coming.
A new study(6) has found that Pycnogenol® may help osteoarthritis . This joint condition is the nation’s leading cause of disability, limiting everyday activities for 16 million Americans. It results in 750,000 hospitalizations and costs our healthcare system over $51 billion each year(7).
In the study, 156 patients with diagnosed arthritis were given either 100 mg of Pycnogenol® or placebo per day for three months. During this period, they completed questionnaires on arthritis pain and did an exercise treadmill test (testing how far they could walk without pain). The researchers graded ankle swelling in both groups at the beginning and end of the study.
The researchers found that the pain scores decreased by 56% in the Pycnogenol® 1 group, compared to only 9.6% in the placebo group. The Pycnogenol® patients had a 191% increase in distance they could walk on the treadmill without pain (65 m to 198 m), compared to only 35% in the placebo group. Finally, ankle swelling decreased by 79% in the Pycnogenol® group, compared to only 1% in the placebo group.
For the researchers, “Pycnogenol® l offers an option for reduction of treatment costs and side effects by sparing anti-inflammatory drugs” when treating osteoarthritis.

Fish Oil During Pregnancy Improves Infant Eye and Brain Health
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, April 22, 2008, abstracted from “Beneficial Effects of a Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid on Infant Development: Evidence from the Inuit of Arctic Quebec” in the 2008 issue of the Journal of Pediatrics
Nutrients that need to be taken by women who are pregnant to help their child’s health include vitamin C to help the immune system(1), vitamin E to help protect against mercury(2), vitamin B-3 for nervous system development(3), and calcium for bone health(4). Another crucial area of infant development is the brain, which is where fish oil comes in.
Although fish oil has been found to help with blood pressure in infants(5), the fish oil fat called DHA is the primary fat found in the brain(6). And because it is very difficult for the mother to produce her own DHA for the baby until four months after birth(7), supplementing fish oil during pregnancy may be crucial to brain health in the unborn child. Research has shown that taking fish oil during pregnancy can help eye-hand coordination in infants(8). Building on these findings, a new study(9) has shown that taking fish oil during pregnancy can help brain and eye development in infants.
The study included 109 pregnant mothers participating in the Environmental Contaminants and Child Development Study in Quebec from 1995-2001(10). They provided umbilical cord and breast milk samples after the birth of their baby, and also provided information about diet and lifestyle. At six months of age, the infants underwent the Teller Visual Acuity Card Test(11) and the Fagan Test of Infant Intelligence (FTII)(12). At 11 months of age, they underwent the FTII and mental and psychomotor indices of the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID-II).
In addition to finding higher levels of DHA in the umbilical cords versus breast milk (revealing the strong dependence by the fetus on the mother for adequate DHA intake), the length of pregnancy was increased by more than four days when umbilical cord levels of DHA reached 3% of the total fatty acid levels. Unfortunately, no data on maternal intake of DHA was assessed; only measurements from the umbilical cord and breast milk were given.
Regarding infant coordination, higher DHA cord levels resulted in higher visual and coordination scores (30% higher visual acuity, 9% higher FTII scores, and 5% higher mental development scores) at 6 months, but not at 11 months. These results led the researchers to conclude that “The association of higher cord DHA concentration with more optimal visual, cognitive, and motor development is consistent with the need for substantial increases in [DHA] during the third trimester spurt of [brain development] and [eye] development. CoQ10 May Offer Help for Fatigue During Exercise
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, April 18, 2008, abstracted from “Antifatigue effects of coenzyme Q10 during physical fatigue” in the April 2008 issue of Nutrition
CoQ10 was first identified in 1957 and was known as “ubiquinone” because it is found everywhere in the body. It is found in the highest amounts in the heart, liver, kidneys, and pancreas and in lowest amounts in the lungs(1). While helping to maintain healthy levels of inflammation (2), CoQ10 has been found to help with mental health (3), migraines (4), heart health (5), and even blood sugar health(6).
Now a new study(7) has found that CoQ10 can also help with fatigue during exercise. In the study, 17 healthy patients took either 100 mg of CoQ10, 300 mg of CoQ10, or placebo per day for 8 days. The patients exercised for two hours on a stationary bike twice per day (at 8 am and 4:30 pm) at a workload which produced 80% of their maximum heart rate. The patients filled out a visual analog scale rating fatigue from 0 (no fatigue) to 100 (complete exhaustion(8) and had blood pressure and blood samples taken after each exercise session.
While there was no difference in blood pressure changes between the three groups, the researchers found that those in 300 mg group of CoQ10 reported 22% less fatigue than the placebo group and 13% less fatigue than the 100 mg group. Exact numbers were not provided by the researcher but were plotted on a bar graph.
For the researchers, “oral administration of coenzyme Q10 improved subjective fatigue sensation and physical performance during fatigue-inducing workload trials” and that “administration of coenzyme Q10 might prevent unfavorable conditions as a result of physical fatigue.”
