General Sleep Apnea Information
Sleep apnea is a condition that occurs when a person stops breathing for more than 10 seconds while sleeping. Sleep apnea is designated as mild, moderate or severe depending on how many times a sufferer stops breathing (apnea) or slows his breathing (hypopnea) during the night. People with sleep apnea stop breathing between five and 50 times a night. Possible Causes of Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is usually caused by an obstruction or blockage in the airway, including the nose, throat or mouth. An obstruction can result from a structural problem with the face or enlarged tissues in the mouth, nose and/or throat, like the tonsils or tongue. Obesity, excessive alcohol use and some medications can also result in sleep apnea. Sinus congestion and allergies may also cause obstruction in the airways, causing or increasing the affects of sleep apnea.
