Senna Leaf General Information
Senna is a shrub common to North Africa, reaching up to 3 feet in height with pale green stems. The brittle and grayish-green leaflets and oblong pod fruit are the parts used for medicinal purposes. Since the early 9th and 10th centuries, various Cassia plants have been used as purgatives and laxatives. The Senna Leaf was considered a “cleansing” herb because of its cathartic effect. This herb contains sennosides A and B and has a laxative effect.

Senna Leaf Uses & Scientific Evidence For
Germany's Commission E recommends Senna for severe constipation; however, it cannot be used where there is inflammation in the G.I. tract itself due to irritation. It is meant to be used as a short-term laxative only. Senna can also be applied as a paste to treat ringworm and acne. Additionally, the leaves are sometimes made into a paste and used on various skin diseases.

Senna Leaf Dosage Information
Senna is a strong purgative and should be taken with care and in the recommended dosage. In using tablets or capsules, 10-60 mg of sennosides per day is recommended as safe. It has an irritant effect upon the intestinal membrane, and may cause griping, pain or nausea, along with liquid stools or diarrhea. For most formulations it is best to carefully follow label directions and warnings.

Senna Leaf Safety & Interaction Information
Senna is safe when used according to the recommended doses, but chronic abuse may cause electrolyte disturbances and fluid imbalances due to potassium loss and can also interfere with or potentiate the activity of cardiac glycosides. Senna is cathartic and can cause griping and colic, therefore, it is normally taken with aromatic, carminative herbs that relax the intestinal muscles. Do not use in the presence of intestinal obstruction, acute inflammatory intestinal diseases or appendicitis. It may potentiate arrhythmias when given concomitantly with antiarrhythmic medications. When given concomitantly, it decreases the serum level of estrogen due to the effect of intestinal transit on the absorption of estrogens, and it can reduce the therapeutic effect of indomethacin (NSAIDS) due to the inhibition of prostaglandin. Do not use while pregnant or nursing. Do not give to children under 2 years of age.
