Current Event News: Support the Health Freedom Protection Act Reprinted with permission from Citizens for Health, www.citizens.org, November 15, 2005 One can’t help but marvel at the simplicity and inherent healthfulness of food-based remedies. Imagine how much healthier we would be if, before leaping to purchase synthetic prescription drugs, we turned to foods and natural remedies as the first step toward solving our health problems. Imagine how much money we would save; imagine how much money the U.S. government and employers would save. Unfortunately, consumers in the U.S. are not getting all the information they need to make safe, natural health choices. The FDA’s approval process for informational labeling of food-based health claims has been so slow and uncertain that very little meaningful health information is making its way to food and dietary supplement consumers. In two years, only nine products have received approval to be labeled with qualified health claims, and no applications have yet been received by the FDA this year. The FDA’s bottlenecking of qualified health claims for foods and dietary supplements withholds critical health and disease prevention information from us, the American public. WE CAN CHANGE THE LAW A bill has been introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives that would give consumers access to truthful, non-misleading health information. The Health Freedom Protection Act, H.R. 4282, was introduced in the U.S. House on Wednesday, November 9th, 2005. The purpose of this bill is to amend the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act to ensure that: 1. Accurate health claims are not suppressed 2. Consumers are given truthful and full information about the science supporting the health-enhancing effects of foods and dietary supplements (including scientific evidence that foods, dietary supplements and dietary ingredients may provide benefits relating to the cure, mitigation, treatment and prevention of disease (not drug effects). 3. The FDA honors the intent of the Congress to not censor accurate health claims Passage of The Health Freedom Protection Act, H.R. 4282, would yield more health information on the foods and supplements we buy, potentially cutting our drug costs by educating us about natural alternatives. H.R. 4282 would not encourage companies to provide false hope but, on the contrary, would instead finally provide consumers more science-based information rather than less. H.R. 4282 would not weaken the FDA's and FTC's enforcement powers but would instead strengthen consumers’ access to truthful, science-supported and non-misleading health information. H.R. 4282 would not take away anything but would instead give consumers the breadth and depth of information that is true to the spirit and intent of the laws which support and defend consumers’ rights to science-supported health information. Click here to send a letter to your representative and encourage them to support H.R. 4282 Please don't settle for scientific censorship. Stand up for your First Amendment rights by sending a message to your Representative telling them you want the Health Freedom Protection Act, H.R. 4282, passed into law. In Health, Ana Micka

20 Supplements for a Healthy Holiday Season, Part 1
By Jayson Kroner, C.S.N.
Note: This is a two-part article on winter wellness. Part 1 covers Stress and Cold & Flu. Part 2 will cover Digestive Support, Weight Loss, and Energy.
Faster than you can scream “I was already waiting for that parking spot!” the holidays will be upon us. And while this fast-approaching time of year can be one of reflection, family and celebration, let’s not forget that we’re still human.
Remarkably, far too many of us unwillingly subject ourselves to a seemingly inhuman holiday to-do list. What’s even more remarkable is that this list actually seems to grow with each passing year. Crowded shopping malls, unexplainable overeating, mind-numbing family stories, and deadly flu strains can leave even the most health-savvy individual physically, emotionally and nutritionally drained.
Don’t fret. This business of science and nutrition is a remarkable one, and has afforded us with a wealth of supplements that can help support the five major areas of vulnerability during the holiday season. Let’s examine each, individually.
STRESS
Phosphatidyl Serine
This potent phospholipid is a vital component of cognitive health, and plays an important role in the billions of neurotransmissions that take place each second within the body. It has been shown to help improve the quality of electrical impulses, making it much more possible to juggle the hundreds of tasks that surface during the holidays.(1)
GABA
As joyous as they are, the holidays have the uncanny ability to send our brains into a decision making frenzy. GABA is a naturally occurring amino acid that works by preventing neurotransmitters from over firing during high periods of stress and anxiety.(2)
St. John’s Wort
The extracts of this summer perennial contain hypericin – a natural pigment that has been shown to help balance mood by encouraging the brain’s natural production and activity of serotonin. Many have also used it to help overcome brief stints of insomnia and restlessness, as well.(3)
Omega-3 Fish Oil
A now famous 1999 Harvard study was among the very fist to conclude that the EPA and DHA compounds in Omega-3 essential fatty acids seem to have a very positive impact on how well the body handles many form stress and anxiety. Their beneficial effects are in no way limited to stress, though. Fish oil plays a number of roles within the body that can influence holiday wellness, and year-round health.(4)
COLD and FLU
Olive Leaf
Nothing can spoil the spirit of the season faster than an untimely bout with the flu or common cold. The leaves of Olive trees (Olea Europaea) trees contain high concentrations of oleuropeins. These powerful compounds help eliminate foreign microbes while promoting a responsive immune system.(5)
Zinc Lozenges
When taken at the first sign of a cold or flu, zinc lozenges shower the throat with a potent layer of immune-enhancing compounds. This creates an environment that is unfavorable to many of microbes and viral infections that commonly wreak havoc during the cold, winter months.(6)
Ester-C with Bioflavonoids
Ester C is a powerful free radical fighter that’s been used by millions to protect cells from the damaging effects of oxidation. In addition, it’s essential to virtually every aspect of human life. When coupled with bioflavonoids, the synergistic effects help increase its overall effectiveness and bioavailability.(7)
Mushroom extracts
Medicinal mushroom extracts such as Shiitake, Reishi and Maitake contain some of the most powerful immune-boosting compounds available - 1,3 beta glucans. These naturally-occurring cell guardians have been shown to help support innate and adaptive immunity by stimulating the production of NK (natural killer) cells & white blood cells.(8)

20 Supplements for a Healthy Holiday Season, Part 2
By Jayson Kroner, C.S.N.
Note: This is a two-part article on winter wellness. Part 1 covered Stress and Cold & Flu. Part 2 covers Digestive Support, Weight Loss, and Energy.
DIGESTIVE SUPPORT
Psyllium
During the holidays, the digestive system is subject to foods and other goodies that come only once a year. Sadly, most of these holiday treats lack fiber, making digestion an arduous task. Psyllium is an effective natural source of soluble fiber with remarkable bulking abilities. When taken with plenty of water, it can serve as a smart way to ensure that there’s always room for one last bite.(1)
Milk Thistle
A month of high-powered egg nog, champagne toasts, holiday parties and new years celebrations can take a serious toll on the efficacy of the liver. Milk thistle is a safe herbal extract that has been used for thousands of years to help cleanse and purify the liver, while increasing the flow of bile for healthy digestion.(2)
Acidophilus
Mere mention of the word bacteria can make most people cringe. However, it’s important to remember the body relies on many “friendly” bacteria to help with digestion, metabolism and gastrointestinal infections. Acidophilus is a probiotic that has been shown to support optimal digestion.(3)
Digestive Enzymes
It’s bad enough that a large percentage of Americans suffer from some form of enzymatic deficiency. When you factor in holiday overeating, the need for additional digestive enzymes becomes even more important. Look for a formula that contains a versatile mix of enzymes, clearly stating its “active units” and milligrams per serving.(4)
WEIGHT LOSS
CLA (Conjugated linoleic acid)
Since its introduction in the mid-1990’s, CLA has been used by millions to help support a healthy physique. A number of clinical studies have demonstrated its ability to help preserve lean muscle tissues while breaking down stored fat that can then be used for energy and metabolism.(5)
Kelp
Before the body can even begin to metabolize those extra holiday calories, it must have the right mix of nutrients present in order to produce thyroid hormones. Iodine is one of the most important, and mandatory for the production of T3 and T4 thyroid hormones. Kelp is an excellent source of iodine, and a smart way to support a healthy thyroid.(6)
Citrimax®
Hydroxy-citric acid (HCA) provides a natural, non-stimulating thermogenic effect that has helped scores of physique-minded individuals reach their dietary goals. Many users take it with Chromium and Kelp to increase its effectiveness.(7)
Relora®
By now, it’s safe to assume that most of us have seen at least one ad on TV that talks about the stress hormone cortisol. Relora® is a patented proprietary blend of standardized extracts of magnolia officialis and phellodendron amurense that has been shown to induce relaxation, and prevent the release of this nasty stress hormone.(8)
ENERGY
Multiple vitamin and mineral formula
Ok, so taking a multiple won’t send you bouncing off the walls. But make no mistake – a good multiple can provide the nutritional foundation essential to thousands of biological actions, including cellular energy production. (This comes in very handy when chasing kids through a toy store).
B-Complex Vitamins
The B family of vitamins plays an active role in virtually every aspect of life, and is of considerable importance for anyone who lacks energy during the hustle and bustle of the busy holiday season. Look for a “stress” formula for added support.
CoQ10
This ultra-beneficial substance is present in every living cell, and essential to immune function, heart health, tissue protection and cellular energy production. It’s widely considered one of the best supplements for the cardiovascular system based on its ability to support high-energy organs.(9)
L-Carnitine
L-Carnitine is an amino acid-like substance that has become a true legend among dietary supplements. Its primary role is to escort long-chain fatty acids into the “factory” region of the cell. From there, they can be converted into energy that the body can use for metabolism, or just running last-minute holiday errands.(10)
In conclusion...
If you’re like most warm-blooded Americans, you probably hold the holiday season close to that love-hate section of your heart. But in spite of the time spent with loved ones, self-justified midnight cookie benders and the endless spectrum of lights that fill hearts, homes and horizons, it’s dire to keep one thing in mind. A commitment to sound winter wellness can make every toast, blessing and moment of reflection so much more enjoyable. So this year, before you give even one gift to a loved one, reward yourself with one of immeasurable value - the gift of good health. Now, and all year long.
Happy holidays!

Selenium: The New Arthritis Supplement?
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, November 14, 2005
Arthritis limits everyday activities for 16 million Americans, results in 750,000 hospitalizations and costs our healthcare system over $51 billion each year. The Centers for Disease Control estimate that the number of people aged 65 or older with arthritis is projected to more than double, from 15.7 million in 2002 to 33.3 million in 2030.(1)
When it comes to osteoarthritis, the two most popular nutritional supplements to help both treat and prevent OA are glucosamine combined with chondroitin (2),(3) with recent research finding that “glucosamine sulfate may be effective and safe in delaying the progression and improving the symptoms of knee (arthritis)“.(4)
Now a new study presented at the American College of Rheumatology 2005 Annual Conference in San Diego(5) has re-introduced the possible use of a mineral to help treat OA: selenium .
Although only required in small amounts, Selenium is essential to health by being a component of important antioxidant enzymes called selenoproteins.(6) These enzymes help protect our cells from free radicals that contribute to the development of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease.(7) Selenoproteins also help regulate thyroid function and play a role in the immune system.(8) Plant foods are the major dietary sources of selenium in most countries throughout the world
Following up on a 2002 study that found selenium helps prevent joint breakdown in OA,(9) researchers studied selenium intake on 940 participants. They found that those in the highest selenium group had only about half the chance of severe osteoarthritis or disease in both knees, with the association being even stronger in African-Americans and women.
Although the researchers admit they do not know just how selenium inhibits the progression of osteoarthritis , the researchers concluded that “there appears to be a clear relationship between selenium and osteoarthritis.” Greg Arnold is a Chiropractic Physician practicing in Danville, CA. Another Use for Cranberry: Helping Prevent Lung, Colon, and Adult Cancer
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, October 31, 2005, abstracted from “MALDI-TOF MS characterization of proanthocyanidins from cranberry fruit (Vaccinium macrocarpon) that inhibit tumor cell growth and matrix metalloproteinase expression in vitro” published online October 17, 2005 in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture
Public interest in the North American cranberry as a functional food is increasing, due to a variety of potential health benefits. The most prominent of these benefits is an ability to help prevent the growth of the E. coli bacteria that are responsible for urinary tract infections.(1)
Cranberries contain high amounts of antioxidants called flavonols, anthocyanins, and proanthocyanins, compared to other fruit.(2) Research has found that these particular antioxidants help prevent oxidative processes including low-density lipoprotein oxidation(3, 4) and also decrease oxidative damage to nerves after a stroke.(5)
A new study(6) has found that cranberry antioxidants may help prevent a number of cancers namely lung cancer, adult leukemia (called ‘chronic myelogenous leukemia’), and colon cancer. In the study, cranberry extract was found to stop cell growth in three different cell lines, namely H460 lung, HT-29 colon and K562 leukemia cell lines. Researchers found that cranberry antioxidants inhibit lung, colon, and leukemia cell lines, but they are not as effective against breast cancer(7) as grape seed extract.(8)
Nevertheless, researchers were convinced of the anti-cancer benefits of cranberries, concluding that “(antioxidants in) cranberries…inhibit the proliferation of H460 lung, HT-29 colon and K562 leukemia cell lines.”

Study Discovers How Vitamin E Helps Prevent Prostate Cancer
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, November 10, 2005, abstracted from “Tocopherol-Associated Protein Suppresses Prostate Cancer Cell Growth by Inhibition of the Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase Pathway” in the November 1, 2005 issue of Cancer Research
After a turbulent couple of weeks in early 2005 where its healthful effects were questioned,(1, 2) vitamin E has maintained its reputation as a vitally important antioxidant in the role of our health. These healthful properties of vitamin E lie in one type of antioxidant found in vitamin E, called tocopherols. Research has found that tocopherols help treat menstrual problems,(3) protect against Alzheimer Disease ,(4) prostate cancer ,(5) Lou Gehrig Disease (6) and even help prevent heart-related deaths in women.(7)
Despite all of this research, the exact mechanism by which tocopherols exert these effects is little-known. Other antioxidants present in full-spectrum vitamin E complexes are called tocotrienols. These antioxidants help minimize brain damage from strokes(8) by protecting our nerves against free radical damage.(9, 10, 11)
Now a new study(11) has found one way that vitamin E helps protect us against cancer, specifically prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths after lung cancer in American men.(12) Age, ethnic origin and a family history have all been found to increase prostate cancer risk. A recent NOW Foods article also pointed to processed foods as a significant cause of prostate cancer.
In the study, researchers found that the activity of a protein called tocopherol-associated protein (TAP), binds vitamin E and promotes its uptake in prostate cancer cells, thereby accelerating vitamin E’s anti-cancer effects in prostate cancer cells. In addition, they found that TAP levels were “significantly lower” in prostate cancer than in a normal prostate.
TAP increases vitamin E's capacity to control the rapid growth of the cancer cells and concluded that “TAP may represent a new prognostic marker for prostate cancer progression.”
