Winter Colds and Flu Tips
Here comes winter! Bringing with it all the usual sniffles, sneezes, sore throats, fevers,
aches and pains. But it doesn't have to be this way. We think of the common cold as just that (common). But not everyone gets the so called common cold. Why? Actually many more people get the bugs (viruses) that cause the terrible symptoms we all recognize and carry it around, spreading the germs every where without even getting the first symptom! They are called carriers and while their bodies are immune to the bugs they can still pass them on. Just because someone seems healthy doesn't mean they can't give you a cold.
Colds, chest colds, common colds, head colds and flu are caused by viruses. These insidious invaders have a strong will to live! They have hundreds of different forms, the virus is always changing its shape, size and form. They adapt very quickly to a new environment and when they encounter an obstacle, say an antibiotic, they learn how to overcome it, in other words they become immune to it. Getting stronger as they go from person to person, so by the time they invade your body they are, in effect, a new life form! Your body detects this and tries to kill the invaders. Usually the first clue you have is a fever.
A fever is a natural process and your bodies first defense, it tries to burn the virus up or destroy it with heat. Sometimes it works and a fever is the only symptom you have. But if your immune system isn't strong your symptoms become worse. As your body tries to fight the virus you become weak and feel tired, your muscles and bones begin to ache as if they are over worked, even though you haven't been working out or exercising. But in a way you have been over exerting yourself, because every cell in your body is fighting the virus and each time you move or walk it has to work harder. That's why plenty of rest is important; don't give your body extra work to do, as it is working hard for you already.
Meditation can work better than medication! Letting yourself get stressed out is very easy to do when you have a cold or flu, after all you can't work, clean or cook and it's hard enough just to get to the bathroom. Try not to worry about all the things you can't do. Force yourself to relax, have a cup of nice warm tea, fill the room with your favorite scents and sounds, lie back on the pillows and envision thousands of tiny warriors fighting the virus in your body. It doesn't sound very relaxing to imagine that there is a war going on inside of you, but this is what is happening! Just remember all the good guys have to do is touch the bad guys and they melt away! Your body will win this battle more quickly if you give it rest.
Drink plenty of fluids. As your body process speed up to help fight the invaders, it uses up body liquids and you can become dehydrated quickly. Take your vitamins and minerals more often, as these are being used more quickly as well. Vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements are of great value in keeping up the energy level and strengthening the immune system. Boosting your immune system will help with everything from the common cold and flu to arthritis or even cancer.

Fighting Cancer With Foods, Herbs and Supplements
Cancer strikes one in three Americans and traditional medicine attacks this disease with surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. The side effects of such treatments may cause death even before the cancer does. Alternative treatments are also being recommended, yet few Americans take advantage of them. Cancer is the uncontrolled reproduction of cells in the body. The exact reason why the cells do this is unknown. What is known is that nutrition or the lack of it is a major cause. The National Cancer Institute estimates that roughly one-third of all cancer deaths may be diet related.
Many common foods, herbs and supplements contain cancer-fighting properties, from the antioxidants that neutralize the damage caused by free radicals to the powerful phytochemicals that scientists are just beginning to explore. For instance:
Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage contain a chemical component called indole-3-carbinol that can combat breast cancer by converting a cancer-promoting estrogen into a more protective hormone. Broccoli, especially sprouts, also have the phytochemical sulforaphane, a product of glucoraphanin believed to aid in preventing some types of cancer, like colon and rectal cancer. Sulforaphane induces the production of certain enzymes that can deactivate free radicals and carcinogens. These enzymes have been shown to inhibit the growth of tumors in laboratory animals.
Tomatoes contain lycopene, an antioxidant that attacks roaming oxygen molecules, known as free radicals, that are suspected of triggering cancer. Lycopene is more than twice as powerful as Beta Carotene as an antioxidant. They also have vitamin C, an antioxidant which can prevent cellular damage that leads to cancer. Scientists in Israel have shown that lycopene can kill mouth cancer cells. An increased intake of lycopene has already been linked to a reduced risk of breast, prostate, pancreas and colorectal cancer.
Garlic (Allium sativum) may be an effective treatment for cancer because of its effects on the liver, tumor cells and the immune system. There has been more written about the benefits of garlic than any other food source known. It's history dates back 3,500 years: Hippocrates, the father of medicine, was the first to write that garlic was an excellent medicine for eliminating tumors. It may also help restore natural killer (NK) cell activity. Its ability to reduce the side effects of cancer treatment was demonstrated in animal studies. Researchers believe that because garlic enhances the activity of glutathione S-transferase, a liver enzyme that helps detoxify and remove toxins from the body, it may destroy toxins before they cause damage. Diallyl sulfide, a component of garlic oil, has also been shown to render carcinogens in the liver inactive. Studies have linked garlic to lower risk of stomach and colon cancer. Dr. Lenore Arab, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the UNC-CH (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) schools of public health and medicine and colleagues analyzed a number of studies and reported their findings in the October 2000 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. According to the report, people who consume raw or cooked garlic regularly face about half the risk of stomach and colon cancer.
Black cumin seeds (Nigella sativa) is related to a common garden flower that goes by several names including Egyptian black cumin and love-in-a-mist. Nigella seeds are traditionally eaten alone, ground with honey or used as a garnish. In the Mediterranean and Middle East where nigella seeds are traditionally used, it is also referred to as black seed and is used for a variety of ailments including upper respiratory conditions, headaches and cancer. Black cumin seed extracts have been found help to stimulate bone marrow and immune cells, so writes the scientists of the Cancer Immuno-Biology Laboratory and adding that it raises the interferon production, protects normal cells against cell destroying effects of viruses, destroys tumor cells and raises the number of antibodies producing B cells. The study also reported that when incubated with nigella extract, cancer cells were unable to produce fibroblast growth factor and the protein collagenase, both necessary for blood-vessel growth into the tumor. Without a blood supply, a tumor cannot grow. All these functions make the Black cumin seed oil the ideal candidate for the prevention and treatment of cancer. The active components of nigella seeds are the volatile oils thymoquinoline and dithymoquinone. In laboratory experiments both of these chemicals inhibit tumor cells resistant to anti-cancer drugs.
According to the USDA Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Databases compiled by James Duke, Ph.D., nigella seed also contains limonene which stimulates cancer-killing immune cells. Found in high amounts in lavender, limonene is being investigated for use as a treatment for some types of cancer. D-limonene is a terpene, a compound found in plants. The best source of d-limonene is the oil from orange peels. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin found that when d-limonene was added to the diets of rats who had developed tumors, 90% of them had their tumors disappear completely. You can do what most juice experts have been saying for years: juice the orange and the peel together, just make sure your oranges are organically grown.
Mushrooms, there are a number of mushrooms that appear to help the body fight cancer and build the immune system. These mushrooms contain polysaccharides, especially Lentinan, powerful compounds that help in building immunity. They are a good source of Beta Glucan. They also have a protein called lectin, which attacks cancerous cells and prevents them from multiplying. They also contain Thioproline. These mushrooms can stimulate the production of interferon in the body.
- Shiitake and Maitake, have been used for centuries in traditional Asian medicine for general well being. This product contains 8% beta glucan, the polysaccharide to which most of the health benefits are attributed.
- Reishi (Ganoderma Lucidum), used for thousands of years in China and considered an "elixir of life" the Chinese have used this herb as a tonifier and detoxifier to enhance the immune system, vitality, and blood circulation, and to dispel inflammation. Reishi works in the treatment of cancer because it helps cleanse the body from toxins and it helps strengthen the immune system. The anti-cancer agents in Reishi are the polysaccharides and Germanium. The polyshaccharide fraction of Ganoderma is largely responsible for its anti-tumor efficacy. Reishi can be used as a supplement during chemotherapy or radiotherapy to reduce side-effects such as fatigue, loss of appetite, hair loss, bone marrow suppression and risk of infection. It can also reduce the toxic side effects and mitigate the pain during chemotherapy and radiotherapy, in particular for cancer patients at terminal stages to prolong their lives and improve their quality of live.
- Agaricus blazei Murill, It is widely held that cancer develops through a weakening of the immune system through aging or other factors. This is one of the reasons why attention is focusing more and more on ABM. Research has also shown that Agaricus blazei contains more beta glucans than any of the other medicinal mushrooms tested so far. The in-vitro research and animal studies both show significant immune stimulating properties. The mushroom contains large quantities of polysaccharides, which have been attributed an immunity enhancing effect. In addition, it reduces hyper-reaction of the immune system and thus contributes to establishing an equilibrium in the system as a whole.
- Coriolus Versicolor, over 300 scientific studies document the powerful immune building properties of this mushroom, Coriolus versicolor is rich in polysaccharides and other immune boosting compounds, high potency extract contains both PSK and PSP, the most active components in Coriolus, and some of the first all natural extracts used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to be fully backed by modern clinical research.
- Kombucha (cum boo chuh), dates back to the 5th century A.D. It is a fermented tea-like drink made from black tea, sugar, and a live pancake-shaped fungus with the consistency of a wet mushroom. Kombucha produces acids similar to those made by the liver. It binds with toxins in the digestive tract and carries them out of the body via normal waste elimination. It can help prevent and treat cancer. If prepared properly, it has no known harmful side effects in regular dosage of a cup or two a day.
Herbs, many herbs contain powerful cancer fighting constiuents.
Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceous) In Chinese medicine Astragalus is considered an adaptogenic herb. American Cancer Society publication reports it restored immune functions in 90% of the cancer patients studied. A 1988 experiment indicated astragalus extract increased the ability of interleukin-2 to kill cultured tumor cells. A more recent study at the Hiroshima University School of Medicine in Japan showed that a water-based astragalus extract, had several immuno-stimulating effects. It increased B cell growth, T cell activity, and interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor and antibody production.
Pau D'Arco is an extract from the inner bark of a certain South American tree. Lapachol, the active ingredient, can produce strong biological responses against cancer. It is said that the pau d'arco tree yields lapachol and 20 other compounds that may be useful in treating cancer, lupus, diabetes and Hodgkin's Disease.
Red Clover (Trifolium pratense) has been used throughout the world as a treatment for cancer. Now new research by The National Cancer Institute has found 4 anti-tumor compounds in red clover including daidzein and genistein. Red clover also possesses antioxidant properties in the form of tocopherol, a form of vitamin E.
The herb Jiaogulan gynostemma ( gymnostemma pentaphyllum ), induces the synthesis of superoxide dismutase (SOD), one of the most important antioxidants that the body itself produces for clearing free radicals. SOD is a naturally occurring enzyme that absorbs highly damaging free radicals and coverts them to hydrogen peroxide. Scientists have found the more susceptible a normal cell has become to carcinogens, the less SOD it has. It has shown remarkable abilities in dealing with cancer cells, causing dramatic tumor remissions. SOD has also shown to be very useful in counteracting the effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

Green tea contains certain antioxidants known as polyphenols (catechins) which appear to prevent cancer cells from dividing. According to a report in the July 2001 issue of the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, these polyphenols that are abundant in green tea, red wine and olive oil, may protect against various types of cancer. Dry green tea leaves, are about 40% polyphenols by weight, and may also reduce the risk of cancer of the stomach, lung, colon, rectum, liver and pancreas. A recent animal study by Sadao Hirota from the University of Shizuoka in Japan showed that, when taken with chemotherapy, green tea also enhanced the therapeutic effects of the drugs. The active ingredient is a chemical compound epigallocatechih gallate abbreviated to EGCG, which has strong free-radical-scavenging properties.
Echinacea products are used as a general stimulant to the immune system, supporting and stabilizing cellular immunity and cleansing the blood, for the prevention and treatment of infections. Many laboratory studies document Echinacea's use as an immune stimulator. The active polysaccharide fraction of Echinacea stimulates the activity of macrophages, white blood cells which destroy bacteria, viruses, other foreign invaders, and even wayward cells. Echinacea protects cells against the invasion of viruses and stimulates production of the cytokines interleukin-1, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor. Studies have also shown that combined extracts of Echinacea, Astragalus and Reishi enhanced natural killer cell function, an important component of cellular immunity.
Other supplements:
Alpha lipoic acid protects a complex called NF kappa B. NF Kappa B is involved in controlling cell division and is often damaged in cancer cells (by free radicals). When this damage happens oncogenes can take over the cell cycle leading to uncontrolled cell division and cancer. Some studies indicate Alpha lipoic in conjunction with N-Acetyl Cysteine can repair functional defects in the immune systems of cancer patients as well. It helps the body to produce energy, and provides support to the liver in removing harmful substances from the body. Alpha lipoic is commonly used in the treatment of Amanita mushroom poisoning, which causes severe liver damage. As a powerful antioxidant, Alpha lipoic acid can help to neutralize the free radicals within the body that are thought to influence aging processes.
Colostrum is the fluid given by the mother's breast within 24 hours after giving birth. It is known for its powerful healing factors and is nutrient loaded with immune-system boosters. It is rich in immunoglobulins, which provide essential growth and immune factors that aid overall health.
Inositol is a natural phytochemical (plant chemical). It is a direct precursor of phospholipids which are a major component of cellular membranes. It helps to maintain proper electrical energy and nutrient transfer across the cell membrane. Several studies have shown it to increase Natural Killer (NK) cell activity and exhibit anti-tumor activity. A supplemental form is available known as CellMend with IP-6.
Molybdenum is a little-known, though essential, trace mineral. It is instrumental in regulating pH balance in the body, which, in turn, directly effects oxygenation of cells and tissues, and the resulting metabolic rate of the body. The need for molybdenum has been established, but there is presently no recommended daily allowance.
Germanium enhances the availability of oxygen to both normal and cancer cells. It is well known that cancer cell's worst enemy is an oxygen-rich environment. Several studies have shown Germanium has excellent anti-tumor activities and helps the patient in strength and quality of life. It is thought to do this by strengthening the immune system. Germanium also seems to stimulate interferon production.
N-Acetyl Cystiene (NAC) is an amino acid naturally occurring in the body. Your body uses this substance to make its own natural antioxidant, glutathione. Glutathione is especially helpful in detoxifying free radicals. It is a potent antioxidant that is involved in maintenance of cholesterol and lipoprotein levels, and functions in combination with natural interferons in the body to enhance immune response.
Shark Liver Oil contains Alkylglycerols, chemicals that when ingested orally may work with the body and help activate and support the human body's immune system. Another chemical found in Shark Liver Oil is squalamine, which appears to shut down a tumor's ability to connect to and develop its own blood supply, and may be helpful in brain cancer. It is another good immune system builder.
EDTA (Ethylene-Diamine-Tetra-Acetic acid) is a chelation formula. Chelation therapy is a form of detoxification. It is used to clean the body of toxic heavy metals like mercury, excess calcification and arterial plaque build up. It also stimulates the immune system, sharpens the appetite and generally helps to eliminate the by-products of metabolism. Because of all this, many consider it an excellent treatment against cancer.
DMSO and MSM, both sulfur compounds, have been found useful in the treatment of cancer. When given to a patient undergoing chemotherapy DMSO may help reduce the dosage of the chemo-therapeutic agent. DMSO has been used by several clinics, including the Donsbach Clinic in treating cancers of the bladder, ovary, breast and skin. Studies show that MSM significantly slows the development of both mammary and colon tumors. MSM may also reduce pain and inflammation.
Isoflavones are substances found in soybeans that have several anti-cancer properties. These include inducing apoptosis in cancer cells, slowing down their DNA synthesis and cell division, and inhibiting angiogenesis. Isoflavones seem to stimulate genetic changes, returning cancer cells back into non-cancerous ones. Scientific research shows that soy isoflavones increase bone density in post-menopausal women.

A powerful substance in Olive leaf extract, called oleuropein, has the amazing ability to invade foreign cells, it disrupts the viral amino acid production, inhibits replication, and in retro-viruses neutralizes enzymes that are needed to alter the RNA of a healthy cell whereby the virus would be able to take over those cells.
Vitamin B-17, also know as Laetrile or Amygdalin is a very controversial treatment. There are some claims of death due to cyanide poisoning. The National Cancer Institute proclaims that their tests proved that it does not work and may make cancer worse! While others claim the tests were rigged and that laetrile needs to be taken with vitamin A and enzymes to be really effective. Apricot kernels are said to prevent and cure cancer, Dr. Krebs (the scientist who discovered B-17) asserts that 7 or more apricot seeds per day will make it impossible to develop cancer in one's life time. Vitamin B17 is found in many raw fruit seeds such as the apple, peach, cherry, orange, nectarine and apricot. But is most abundant in raw apricot seeds which have been made illegal to sell in the U.S. by the FDA. Other foods which contain high B-17 are millet, wheat grass, alfalfa sprouts and leaves and bamboo sprouts. As a mater of fact Laetrile is a common and naturally occurring substance in over 2000 foods. Apricot Kernel Oil contains laetrile and is known to be safe. Although illegal in the U.S. many clinics in Mexico and elsewhere claim they are using B-17, (AKA) Laetrile or Amygdalin with overwhelming success! Still need to be convinced of laetrile's safety? In an experiment with mice undertaken at a leading US cancer research center (Sloan-Kettering). For thirty months, mice were injected daily with 2 grams per kilogram of laetrile (equivalent to giving a human a quarter of a pound a day). At the end of the period, these mice were healthier and exhibited better well-being than the control group who did not get any laetrile. How this experiment and other laetrile supporting research got suppressed takes up a fascinating chapter in Ralph Moss's book `The Cancer Syndrome'

Evening Primrose
Oenothera Biennis
Other Names: Common Evening Primrose, Fever plant, Great Evening-Primrose, King's-cureall, Night willow-herb, Scabish, Scurvish, Tree primrose, Wild beet
Habitat: North American native biennial plant, found east of the Rockies to the Atlantic. Naturalized in Britain but found all over the world. Found growing by roadsides, railway banks and waste places in dry open soils, meadows and old fields. Plants will last two years and is self sowing. Evening primrose is easily cultivated, it prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) well-drained soils and requires full sun.
The plants are very tall, often 4 to 5 feet or more in height. The stem is erect, stout, soft-hairy, reddish and branching forming a shrub. Leaves are alternate, rough-hairy, lanceolate, about 3 to 6 inches long and lemon-scented. The taproot is elongated, fibrous, yellow on the outside and whitish within. The flower spikes grow on axillary branches all along the stalk. They are about 2-1/2 inched in diameter, bright yellow and have four petals, a cross shaped stigma and a reflexed calyx (leaves under petals). The flowers open in the evening and close up during the day and are strongly scented with a delicious sweet perfume which attracts pollinating moths. The fruit is an oblong 1 in. capsule containing many tiny reddish seeds. Evening Primrose is in bloom from June to September.
Properties: Evening Primrose is edible and medicinal and has a long history of use as an alternative medicine . The leaves are cooked and eaten as greens and the roots are said to be sweet succulent and delicious when boiled like potatoes. Flowers are a sweet addition to salads or as a garnish and young seedpods are Steamed. This plant was a staple food for many Native American tribes. Formerly cultivated for its nutritious edible roots, it is being increasingly cultivated for the oil contained in its seeds which contains certain the essential gamma-linoleinc acid (GLA), a very valuable fatty acid that is not found in many plants and has numerous vital functions in the body. GLA is an essential fatty acid that the body does not manufacture.
This fatty acid is known to help prevent hardening of the arteries, heart disease, eczema, cirrhosis, rheumatoid arthritis, menopause, PMS, multiple sclerosis, and high blood pressure. It has a positive effect on sex hormone response including the hormones estrogen and testosterone, aids in lowering cholesterol levels, and is important in treating cirrhosis of the liver. Research also demonstrates that primrose oil helps relieve pain and inflammation.
The oil also has a positive effect on the uterine muscles, nervous system and metabolism. The bark and the leaves are astringent and sedative. They have proved of use in the treatment of gastro-intestinal disorders, whooping cough and asthma. A tea made from the roots is used in the treatment of obesity. A finely ground powder made from the flowering stems is used cosmetically in face-masks to counteract reddened skins.

Folklore: Because flowers open at dusk and close again at noon the next day, it was in early times, believed to be a witches herb and used in casting spells. Evening Primrose was described in an old English herbal as an antidote for those "that have taken Opium too liberally." Linnaeus named the plant Oenothera, from the Greek word, "wine," which refers to the ancient use of eveningprimrose roots in scenting wine.

Roasted seeds: Rotate and press dry seed capsules to release seed, roast in oven for 15 to 20 min. at 350 deg. Use on bread or in salad, sprinkle over any dish like pepper.

Q. I am Diabetic and currently take I Glucotrol XL 5 MG 2 times a day. Will Completia Diabetic vitamins conflict with the Glucotrol? Is it safe?

How's your Cholesterol?
