General Obesity Information
Obesity is a condition that results in excess body fat. Obesity is determined by a person’s Body Mass Index (BMI), which is calculated by figuring weight and height. A BMI over 30 is considered obese, and according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one third of Americans fall into this category. Obesity can result in social, emotional and physical problems and often leads to serious diseases and conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease and stroke.
Obesity may be overcome by proper nutrition, healthy living and good eating habits. Proper nutrition is an important factor in maintaining proper body weight because essential nutrients are critical for burning fat and removing carbohydrates from the body. Without proper nutrition excess fat may accumulate in the body resulting in an overweight condition. Crash diets or starvation diets may work well for short term weight loss but they may be harmful to ones health and often are not permanent.
Possible Causes of Obesity
Obesity occurs when a person takes in more calories than he uses. When the body fails to burn off excess calories, it is turned into fat. Contributing dietary factors that may lead to obesity include consuming excessive starch, fatty foods and sugars and lack of exercise. Obesity can also be the result of genetics. Other causes of obesity and sudden weight gain include disturbance in thyroid function, glandular malfunctions, diabetes, hypoglycemia, emotional tension or stress, anxiety, depression, allergies, heredity and poor nutrition.
Possible Symptoms of Obesity
To be considered obese, an adult must have a BMI of 30 or higher. Other symptoms of obesity include snoring, recurring heartburn and aching joints. Psychological signs of obesity include depression, self-hatred and a negative body image. Obesity often begins in childhood. Without treatment, overweight children tend to grow into obese adults.
Possible Lifestyle Changes for Obesity
Obesity can be prevented by exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet and avoiding high fat foods. Successful treatment for obesity includes a combination of healthy eating and regular aerobic exercise. It is helpful to get support from family and friends; learn how to manage stress effectively and removing triggers and access to “forbidden” foods. Most people who are successful at losing weight have a support system in place, such as a weight loss group or organized weight loss plan.
