    QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

    Q:
    Subject: Hello
Is there any treatment or help for multiple sclorises.Age 29 suffering three years. Is there any known help or any herbs, vitamins etc.my friend has son who is the victim of this. Please help.

    Many thanks

    A:
    Dear Customer,
Multiple Sclerosis is an immune system disorder that causes the body’s own antibodies to attack the myelin sheath in the brain and the spinal cord, causing inflammation and scaring. There are three products we might suggest taking to begin feeling some relief from MS: First Lecithin Concentrate is the most abundant phospholipid serving as a structural material for every cell in the body and is an essential constituent of the brain and nervous system responsible for breaking down cholesterol, transporting fats, rebuilding organs, maintaining organ, cardiovascular, and endocrine health, fights infections, lowers blood pressure, restores sexual energy, eases PMS and menopausal tension, promotes energy and benefits nervous and mental disorders. Then Vitamin B Complex supports the nervous system and the immune system. Last but not least MSM helps build new cells and supports the removal of waste and toxins. In order to maintain overall health changing diet would be suggested. There is a lower occurrence of multiple sclerosis in countries where diets low in fats and rich in fatty acids, such as Omega 3 fatty acids from sea foods, seeds and fruits, which may have an inhibitory affect on the inflammatory symptoms of the disease.
    All my best,

Thank you for your interest in Herbal Remedies.com and the opportunity to serve you. Heather

Review of Fish Oil Shows Effectiveness for Mental Health

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, November 21, 2006, abstracted from Depression: Does nutrition have an adjunctive treatment role?” in the December 2006 issue of Nutrition & Dietetics:

Clinical depression is defined as “a mood disorder characterized by a pervasive negative mood persisting for greater than 14 consecutive days”, and is accompanied by a generalized loss of interests, an inability to experience pleasure and suicidal tendencies.(1) But depression is quickly becoming a serious health problem. The World Health Organization estimates that major depressive disorders will become the second leading cause of disability worldwide by the year 2020, after heart disease.(2)

Current treatments for clinical depression comprise a combination of non-pharmacological treatments, including psychotherapy and electroconvulsive therapy,(3) and pharmacological therapy, including tricyclic anti-depressants and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.(4) But with side effects that include weight gain, digestive problems, blurred vision, drowsiness and dizziness,4 many patients are trying to find more tolerable alternatives.(5)

Fortunately, while more tolerable alternatives for clinical depression are surfacing, including folic acid , tryptophan , vitamin B6, B12, S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) and St. John’s Wort ,(6) one of the supplements receiving the most attention is omega-3 fatty acids .(7,8) A new study(9) has reviewed previous research on omega-3 fatty acids and found that they may indeed maintain mental health.

In the study, researchers cited studies showing “evidence that fish and fish oils may be protective against depression” in western countries, which average 11-32 kg of fish consumption per year, and 3-6% of the population suffers depression. In countries such as Japan, which averages 68 kg of fish consumption per year, only 0.12% of the population suffers from depression.(10) And although one study “failed to show any association between dietary intake of omega-3 PUFA or fish consumption and lowered mood or major depressive episodes”,(11)( other data shows that the risk of having depressive symptoms is 31% higher among infrequent fish-consumers than in people who ate fish at least once per week.(12)

An overall examination of the data led the researchers to not only support “a potential therapeutic benefit of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids for the alleviation of negative symptoms associated with depression”, but they made an all-inclusive conclusion that “omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, optimal omega balance, folic acid, tryptophan, vitamin B6, B12, [SAMe] and [St. John’s Wort] may all serve as adjuncts to psychosocial and pharmacological therapies.”

Recent Review Promotes Four Foods/Supplements for Heart Health

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, December 7, 2006, abstracted from “Bioflavonoids and Cardiovascular Health: Tea, Red Wine, Cocoa, and Pycnogenol” posted online in the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association, Vol. 9, No. 2, 2006

According to the Center of Disease Control, the two primary components of cardiovascular disease , heart disease and stroke , now affect one in four Americans (61 million people) and are the first and third causes of death each year. As the most common risk factor for cardiovascular disease, one in four Americans also has high blood pressure , which the American Heart Association has called “the true ‘silent killer’(1) and has also been declared a worldwide epidemic.(2)

. While prescription drug therapies are common in the treatment of high blood pressure, a new study(3) has found that four supplements and foods can also be “part of the…strategy to treat hypertension.”

TEA . Green tea is associated with health due to antioxidants called catechins.(4) Black tea has also been found to offer comparable health benefits,(5) due to its antioxidants called theaflavins.(6) Research has found that green tea helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by as much as 12%.(7)

WINE . Interest in red wine and heart health stems from the “French paradaox” where, despite high intakes of saturated fats and little exercise, the French have “a disproportionately lower incidence of heart disease than other western societies”.(8) It is believed that the high intake of red wine, which contains an antioxidant called resveratrol which helps control inflammation and blood clotting,(9) contribute significantly to this “paradox”.

COCOA . Long used as a medicinal remedy since ancient times,(10) the cocoa bean is no longer looked at with disdain as a health food. This is due to the 170 mg of flavonoid antioxidants contained in a 100 g bar of milk chocolate bar that help maintain heart health(11) and overall blood vessel health.(12)

PYCNOGENOL . When it comes to the effectiveness of french maritime pine park extract, also known as pycnogenol, it is the high amounts of bioflavonoids that help maintain healthy LDL cholesterol(13) by helping control blood clotting(14) and inflammation(15) while also helping maintain healthy blood vessel function.(16)

Although not cited in this study, another supplement worthy of attention is quercetin . Not only has it been found to “be of therapeutic benefit in cardiovascular diseases”,(17) Quercetin has also been found to help with mental(18) and colon health(19) as well as helping diabetics maintain cell health.(20)

Low Vitamin Intake Increases Disability Risk in Women

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, November 30, 2006, abstracted from Low Micronutrient Levels as a Predictor of Incident Disability in Older Women” in the November 27, 2006 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine

The baby boomer generation, defined as those born between 1946 and 1964, now comprise nearly 30% of the American population. With aging baby boomers being such a large segment of the population, it is expected that 1 in 5 Americans will be 65 years or older by 2030.(1)

Because of this growing segment of Americans older than 65, disability is becoming a significant issue, due to the high costs of medical care needed to treat disability.(2) With 7 million Americans older than 65 years currently disabled, this number is only expected to increase and with it the healthcare costs. As a result, strategies aimed at preventing or delaying the onset of disability are “urgently needed”.(3)

A new study(4) has found that helping decrease risks of disability in Americans older than 65 may be as easy as increasing intakes of vitamin B6, B12, and selenium .

In the study, researchers studied 643 women participating in the Women’s Health Initiative Study(5) every 6 months between 1992 and 1995. They drew blood to measure vitamin levels of vitamin B6, B12, selenium, folic acid , vitamin A , vitamin D , and zinc . They also had the women fill out questionnaires on physical activity and ability to complete daily activities.

At the end of the study, researchers found that deficiencies in three nutrients in particular, vitamin B6, B12, and selenium, significantly increased risk of disability in women. Specifically, women in the lowest 25% of B6, B12 and selenium intake had disability rates that were 35%, 39%, and 100% higher than the upper 75% of intake, respectively.

When trying to explain how these vitamins help decrease disability, researchers cited vitamin B6 and B12’s role in lowering levels of homocysteine,(6) a protein that increases oxidative stress,(7) and decreases both artery(8) and brain(9) health, as well as selenium’s role in protecting cells against oxidative damage.(10)

Because only blood levels, and not actual dietary/supplement intake, of the nutrients were measured, no recommendations could be made by the researchers. Nevertheless, they concluded that “low [blood] concentrations of selenium and vitamins B6 and B12 predict subsequent…disability in older women.”

Current recommendations for vitamin B6, B12, and selenium intake are up to 2.4 micrograms,(11) 2 milligrams(12) and 70 micrograms13 per day.

Whey Protein Again Found to Help Keep Blood Pressure in Normal Range

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, November 20, 2006, abstracted from “Effects of Whey Peptides on Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors” in the November 2006 of the Journal of Clinical Hypertension

As a rich source of essential amino acids that comes from cow’s milk,(1) whey protein is an excellent protein to help build muscle. It has also been found to have a number of other healthful uses, including helping maintain healthy cells,(2) bone health ,(3) and immune system health.(4)

Now a new study(5) has found that whey protein may help keep blood pressure in normal range.

Previous research has shown that 200 mg per kg of bodyweight of whey protein helps keep blood pressure in normal range.(6) Building on these findings, researchers had 30 patients with “pre-hypertension” (having a blood pressure between 120/80 mm Hg and 140/90 mm Hg) receive either 20 grams per day of a hydrolyzed whey protein or an unmodified whey protein (control group) for six weeks. Researchers measured blood pressure, blood lipids, side effects, and diet throughout the trial.

At the end of six weeks, researchers followed up the patients for four weeks. They found that patients in the hydrolyzed whey protein group had an average drop of as much as 11 mm Hg in systolic blood pressure (the top number of blood pressure) and 7 mm Hg in diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number of blood pressure) compared with the control group.

For the researchers, “Whey-derived peptides might be a viable treatment option for [patients with pre-hypertension].”

CLA Shows Hope for Bone Health in New Study

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, October 10, 2006, abstracted from “Conjugated linoleic acid protects against age-associated bone loss in C57BL/6 female mice” published online September 25, 2006 in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry

As a food supplement found in meats, poultry, eggs and dairy products,(1) Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is most commonly associated with weight loss . Recent research has found that supplementing with 3.4 grams of CLA per day helps sustain weight loss for more than 2 years.(2) CLA may also even help maintain colon cell health .(3)

Now a new study(4) continues to show the health benefits of CLA, this time in helping maintain bone health , specifically osteoporosis . This condition affects nearly 200 million people worldwide, including 25 million Americans.(5) It can start as early as age 20 to 30 when both men and women start losing bone at a rate of about 0.5–1% each year.(6)

Previous research showed 100 mg of CLA per day to “positively benefit [bone health] in postmenopausal women”.(7) Building upon these findings, researchers fed mice diets that included either 3.5 grams of CLA per day or placebo for 10 weeks. Then they measured body weight, body mass index (BMI), and bone mineral density (BMD). At the end of 10 weeks, the researchers found that CLA “significantly increased” BMD. The findings were the same for BMI, due to CLA’s ability to “dramatically prevent” muscle loss in the mice. The researchers discovered that CLA’s bone-protecting abilities may lie in its ability to “significantly inhibit” inflammatory proteins called cytokines that cause bone loss.(8)

For the researchers, “CLA may prevent the loss of bone and muscle mass by [controlling] markers of inflammation and [bone loss].”
