Calcium and Vitamin D Found to Help Colon Health
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, March 27, 2007, abstracted from Calcium and Vitamin D Intake and Risk of Colorectal Cancer: The Multiethnic Cohort Study” in the March 2007 issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology
Two supplements that are fast becoming invaluable in the fight to help offset the $18 billion annual healthcare costs of osteoporosis-related fractures(1) are calcium and vitamin D . These supplements have also been found to offer other health benefits, including helping patients recover from thyroid surgery(2) as well as helping those with diabetes .(3)
Now a new study(4) has found that calcium and vitamin D taken together may also help improve colon health.
In the study, nearly 86,000 men and over 105,000 patients from the Mulitethnic Cohort Study(5) completed a food frequency questionnaire. The researchers found that, in those with the highest intake of calcium (more than 611 mg per 1,000 calories per day), men had a 48% reduced colorectal cancer risk and women had a 36% reduced risk, compared to those with the lowest intake (less than 288 mg per 1,000 calories per day).
In addition, men with the highest vitamin D intake (more than 276 IU per 1,000 calories per day) had a 28% reduced risk compared to those with the lowest intake (less than 39 IU per 1,000 calories per day). The vitamin D association was not observed in women.
For the researchers, “The findings support the hypothesis of protective roles for calcium, vitamin D, and dairy products in the risk of colorectal cancer.”

Study Finds Antioxidants Reduce Noise Trauma
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, April 3, 2007, abstracted from “Free radical scavengers vitamins A, C, and E plus magnesium reduce noise trauma” printed online in Free Radical Biology and Medicine
Although it is the number one disability in the world, hearing loss is also the most preventable. There are currently 5 million people who own hearing aids. But it is estimated that 25 million more need hearing aids: 15 out of 1000 under age 18 have hearing loss, nearly 90% of people over age 80 have hearing loss, and 3 out of 100 school children are affected by hearing loss.(1)
It has been known for over 30 years that mechanical destruction to a part of the ear called the organ of Corti(2) as well as reduced blood flow3 are the primary causes of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Recent research has started to uncover the significant role of free radicals in NIHL(3, 4) because of their ability to damage hearing cells.
Building on this research, a new study(6) has found that supplementing with antioxidants may help reduce the risk of NIHL.
In the study, four groups of guinea pigs were given the following:
Group 1 – a placebo
Group 2 – 2.1 mg vitamin A per kg of bodyweight with 71.4 mg vitamin C per kg of bodyweight and 26 mg of vitamin E per kg of bodyweight
Group 3 – 343 mg of magnesium per kg of bodyweight
Group 4 – both supplements from groups 2 and 3
These supplements were given daily one hour before noise exposure for and given daily for six days. Noise exposure was at a level of 120 dB which is the equivalent of a subway or loud lawn mower. Rock concerts are typically around 130 dB.
The researchers found that noise-induced deficits were “significantly smaller” only in the group given both antioxidants and magnesium. They found that while vitamins A, C, and E scavenged free the radicals produced by noise exposure, magnesium played a very important role by preventing the blood vessel constriction normally seen after noise exposure. All those synergistic effects together produced the significant result.
In addition to finding that the antioxidant intervention was “safe and effective”, the researchers concluded that this study “provides a compelling rationale for human trials in which free radical scavengers are used to eliminate this single major cause of acquired hearing loss.”

Study Finds Chitosan May Be Helpful for Both Cholesterol and Weight Management
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, April 5, 2007, abstracted from “Effects of shrimp-derived chitosan on plasma lipid profile and liver lipid peroxide levels in normo- and hypercholesterolemic rats” in the March 2007 issue of Clinical and Experimental Physiology and Pharmacology
As a component of chitin (ki-tin) which is the hard substance that makes up the exoskeletons of shrimp, lobster and crabs, chitosan is a sugar that possesses fiber-like qualities and has been used extensively in plastic surgery(1) and as an ingredient in prescription drugs.(2)
Recent research has started to uncover other roles for chitosan as a healthful supplement, specifically for weight-loss (3) and to help keep cholesterol levels in normal range.(4) Now a new study(5) has further highlighted the weight-loss and cholesterol benefits of supplementing chitosan in your diet.
In the study, 25 healthy rats were divided into one of five groups. Two groups were fed a diet consisting of normal cholesterol amounts and supplemented with either none or 2% chitosan. The other three groups were fed a diet containing high cholesterol amounts and supplemented with 1%, 2% or 4% chitosan for 8 weeks. Blood samples were taken to measure total, HDL and LDL cholesterol.
The researchers found that the rats fed normal cholesterol diet with 2% chitosan had a 16% decrease in total cholesterol. What’s more, the high cholesterol group fed 2% and 4% chitosan had a 20% and 24% decrease in total cholesterol as well as much as a 30% increase in HDL cholesterol and as much as a 58% decrease in LDL cholesterol.
When they looked at the weight of the rats, they found the 2% and 4% chitosan groups to gain 23 and 30 grams less compared to the control groups. All of these results led the researchers to conclude that “chitosan decreases the [cholesterol levels] of both [normal cholesterol] and [high cholesterol] rats and reduces the bodyweight gain of [high cholesterol] rats.”

Multivitamins Found to Increase Birth Weight in Newborns
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, April 5, 2007, abstracted from “Vitamins and Perinatal Outcomes among HIV-Negative Women in Tanzania” in the April 5, 2007 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine
Low birth weight is defined as “being born at a weight of less than 5 pounds, 8 ounces”. This condition affects one in 13 babies born every year in the United States and plays a factor in 65 percent of infant deaths. Even if they survive, low birth weight babies may face serious health problems as newborns, and are at increased risk of long-term disabilities.(1)
Research has found that simple nutrition options such as cod liver oil (2) and folic acid (3) helps increase birth weight in newborns. A recent study(4) found that taking a multivitamin during pregnancy may also increase birth weight in newborns and “may reduce the incidence of early [newborn] death.”
Now, building upon the recent multivitamin study, a new study in the New England Journal of Medicine(5) has again highlighted the need for women to take a multivitamin to help ensure a healthy weight for her baby.
In the study, over 8,000 pregnant women (between 12 and 27 weeks of pregnancy) received either a daily multivitamin (including multiples of the recommended dietary allowance) or placebo through the end of their pregnancy. All the women received prenatal supplemental iron and folic acid.
The researchers found that women who took multivitamins had an 18% reduced risk of having a low birth weight newborn. No effects were seen on prematurity (16.7% of pregnancies in placebo group vs. 16.9% in multivitamin group) or fetal death (4.3% vs.5%, respectively).
For the researchers, “Multivitamin supplementation reduced the incidence of low birth weight and small-for-gestational-age births.” Even though no significant decreases were found concerning prematurity or fetal death, they recommended that “Multivitamins should be considered for all pregnant women in developing countries.”

Study Finds Lignans May Help Breast Cell Health in Women
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, March 22, 2007, abstracted from “Dietary Lignan Intake and Postmenopausal Breast Cancer Risk by Estrogen and Progesterone Receptor Status” in the March 2007 issue of the National Cancer Institute
Lignans are a class of antioxidants found in very high concentrations in flaxseed and in moderate amounts in berries, nuts, cereals, bread and some vegetables and fruits.(1) Because they are also phytoestrogens, lignans have the potential to improve women’s health.
Previous research has shown that women with the highest blood concentrations of a lignan called enterolactone reduced pre-menopausal breast cancer by up to 72%.(2) Building on these findings, a new study(3) has found that lignans may also help breast cell health in post-menopausal women.
The study included over 58,000 women who participated in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition Study.(4) They completed a questionnaire on diet, lifestyle, hormonal therapy use and reproductive history.
After a follow-up of over seven years, the researchers found that compared to those with the lowest intakes of lignans per day (less than 878 micrograms per day), those with the highest intakes of lignans (more than 1395 micrograms per day) had a 17% reduced risk of breast cancer. No interaction between phytoestrogen intakes and hormone replacement therapy use with respect to breast cancer risk was seen.
For the researchers, “the results of this large prospective study of French women showed that higher dietary intakes of lignans were associated with a reduction in the risk of postmenopausal breast cancers.”
