Current Event News: Don’t Lose focus get mental focus! The brain is the central command center for the entire body. The brain is responsible for our hearing, feelings, sight, movement, thought and many other aspects of human consciousness. The brain is a constantly changing organ that evolves through a person’s lifetime. When a baby is born, its brain is equipped with 100 billion nerve cells. As the baby has new experiences, these nerves connect to create networks that will transmit information involved with thinking, feeling, sensing and learning. As the child grows, his brain becomes ripe for learning. In adolescence, the brain’s frontal lobe surges with development. Adulthood is a time of continued growth and learning in response to outside stimuli. Old age sees a natural decline in the number of neurons in some areas of the brain, but this does not mean that cognitive decline is inevitable. Many older people continue to lead creative, productive lives to the end. With school in session now is the time we think of ways to enhance brain health and help the brain work to its maximum potential. Herbal Remedies has put together a list of supplements that helps one achieve the mental focus one needs, big or small. These supplements are great for students, business professionals, senior citizens and the mentally fatigued as well as anyone who desires to sharpen their cognitive abilities and to improve their overall energy.

Vitamin C Found to Help with Exercise-Induced Asthma

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, July 16, 2007, abstracted from “Ascorbic acid supplementation attenuates exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in patients with asthma“ in the May 2007 issue of respiratory medicine

Asthma is the third-ranking cause of hospitalization among those younger than 15 years of age, costing $3.2 billion and 14 million lost school days each year.(1) It affects more than 20 million Americans, including 6.1 million children.(2)

Although asthma can be triggered by environmental causes, such as damp homes(3) and exposure to chemical-based cleaners ,(4) one of the most powerful triggers for asthma is exercise. Up to 90% of asthmatics experience exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB). This condition is thought to be due to drying and cooling of the airway from increased breathing rate during exercise(5) which activates histamine, an inflammatory protein.(6)

A new area of interest in the onset of exercise-induced asthma is the role antioxidants play in the condition. With new research(7) reinforcing how low dietary intake of fruit and antioxidants “may be a potentially modifiable risk factor for the development of asthma”, a new study(8) has continued to focus more specifically on vitamin C , the most intensively studied antioxidant for exercise-induced asthma.(9)

In the study, 8 patients with asthma were given either 1500 mg per day of vitamin C or placebo for 2 weeks. The patients then had neither for 1 week (the “washout” period) and then switched treatments. During both treatment periods researchers measured lung function of the patients that included forced expiratory volume (FEV), measured urine levels of inflammatory proteins, and completed a 12 items Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ) to subjectively report their symptoms.

In both treatment periods, vitamin C “significantly reduced” the maximum fall in post-exercise FEV (up to 56%) compared to the placebo group. Urinary levels of the inflammatory proteins were also “significantly lower” (up to 62%) in the vitamin C group compared to placebo. Finally, AQLQ scores “significantly improved” in the vitamin C group compared to placebo.

Although this was a small study of only 8 patients, the researchers concluded that “This double-blind, randomized, crossover, placebo-controlled study has demonstrated that 1500 mg/d of [vitamin C] supplementation for 2 weeks attenuates the bronchoconstrictive response to exercise in asthmatic subjects.”

Calcium and Vitamin D May Help Control Blood Sugar

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, abstracted from “REVIEW: The Role of Vitamin D and Calcium in Type 2 Diabetes. A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis “in the issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism

Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is the fifth leading cause of the death in the U.S.,(1) with 1 million new cases each year,(2) 16 million Americans currently affected(3) and 41 million more at risk.(4) It incurs a cost to society of more than $132 billion per year.(5)

Fortunately, a number of natural ways have been found to help patients control their blood sugar, including chromium ,(6) glucomannan ,(7) cinnamon (8) walnuts(9) and magnesium .(10) Now a new study(11) has found that two more supplements, calcium and vitamin D , may help you control blood sugar.

Current recommendations are 1200 mg per day of calcium and 400 IU per day of vitamin D for people 51-70 and 1200 mg per day of calcium and 600 IU per day of vitamin D for people older than 70 years.(12) Best known for bone health , calcium and vitamin D have also been found to help with nerve and muscle function, falls, psoriasis , multiple sclerosis , and colorectal and prostate cancer .(13, 14)

In a recent study, researchers analyzed studies that examined the association between blood levels of vitamin D and calcium through supplementation or dietary intake and type 2 Diabetes occurrence as well as effects of blood sugar control and insulin resistance.

While they found it “difficult to draw a definitive conclusion about an optimal [intake] because available studies were done…with a large range of levels”, the researchers were able to suggest that vitamin D blood levels of 40 nanograms per milliliter (equivalent to 1000 IU of vitamin D per day) (15) and 1200 mg of calcium intake per day through either supplementation or diet are “optimal” in the fight against T2D.(15)

For the researchers, “combined supplementation with both [calcium and vitamin D] may be beneficial in optimizing [blood sugar] metabolism.” They did admit that their understanding of just how vitamin D and calcium elicit this blood sugar controlling effect is “incomplete” and that “human data are limited” because much of the data in the analyzed studies relied on self-reported intake of calcium and vitamin D rather than knowing exact intakes.

Finally, when these future studies are undertaken, they need to be randomized controlled trials to maximize the strength of the studies and give a more definitive picture of the benefits of calcium and vitamin D and T2D.

Study Finds Fiber Intake Crucial to Helping Protect Men Against Colon Cancer

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, March 2, 2007, abstracted from Fiber, sex, and colorectal adenoma: results of a pooled analysis” in the February 2006 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

As the fourth most common cancer in men behind skin , prostate , and lung cancer ,(1) colorectal cancer was diagnosed in 71,820 men in 2005.(2) Since we don’t know the cause of colorectal cancer and doctors can seldom explain why one person develops the disease and another does not, all we have right now are risk factors, which include advancing age (90 percent of the diagnosed colorectal cancer occurs after age 50), the presence of colorectal polyps (growths on the inner wall of the colon or rectum), and family history.(3) As a result, knowledge on helping protect against colorectal cancer is at a premium.

Now a new study(4) has found that helping men prevent colorectal cancer may lie in increasing their fiber intake.

In the study, data from 3,209 participants combined from two trials were analyzed to examine the effect of a dietary intervention on the recurrence of colon polyps in patients who had colon polyps removed before the study started. In the first trial, called the Wheat Bran Fiber Trial, 1,429 men and women took either a high wheat bran fiber cereal supplement (13.5 grams of fiber in 2/3 cup cereal per day) or a low wheat bran fiber cereal supplement (2 grams of fiber in 2/3 cup cereal per day).

In the second trial, called the Polyp Prevention Trial, 2,079 men and women were assigned to one of two groups. The first group followed a low-fat (20 percent of calories from fat), high-fiber (18 grams per 1,000 calories), high fruit/vegetable (3.5 servings per 1,000 calories) eating plan. The second group was given a brochure on healthy eating. Both trials were conducted by the National Cancer Institute.(5)

Researchers found that men in the intervention groups had a 19% decreased risk of having a recurrence of colon polyps while “no significant association was observed” in women. For the researchers, “The results of the current analyses indicate that men may experience more benefit from dietary fiber than do women.”

Study Shows Fish Oil Quickly Incorporated Into Heart Muscle

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, July 2, 2007, abstracted from “Effects of fish-oil supplementation on myocardial fatty acids in humans“ in the July 2007 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

Fish oil’s positive effects on health are profound. While shown to help with eye health ,(1) back health,2 blood vessel health,(3) and brain health ,(4) fish oil’s best-known benefits seem to be or heart health .(4)

Now a new study(5) has found that omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil are able to promote these heart healthy effects because they are quickly incorporated into heart muscle and replace archidonic acid which increases inflammation .

In the study, 84 patients scheduled for heart surgery were put in one of six groups:

Group 1: No supplement
Group 2: Fish oil (6 g EPA/DHA per day) for 7 days before surgery
Group 3: Fish oil (6 g EPA/DHA per day) for 14 days before surgery
Group 4: Fish oil (6 g EPA/DHA per day) for 21 days before surgery
Group 5: Flaxseed oil (10 mL per day for 21 days before surgery
Group 6: Olive oil (10 mL per day for 21 days before surgery

During surgery, researchers obtained a piece of heart muscle that was subsequently analyzed for fatty acid content.

The researchers found that those in the fish-oil group had an accumulation of EPA and DHA and displaced mainly arachidonic acid. Specifically, omega-3 fatty acid levels in the heart muscle nearly doubled while arachidonic acid levels were cut nearly in half. Those in flaxseed oil group yielded “a small increase” in atrial EPA but not DHA, and those in the olive oil group had no significant change in omega-3 fatty acid levels.

For the researchers, “The results of the present study show that dietary omega-3 fatty acids are rapidly incorporated into human [heart muscle membranes] at the expense of arachidonic acid during high-dose fish oil supplementation.”

Valerian Root and Lemon Balm Have Relaxing Effect in Children

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, October 17, 2006, abstracted from “A combination of valerian and lemon balm is effective in the treatment of restlessness and dyssomnia in children” in the June 2006 issue of Phytomedicine

Defined as “ difficulty in falling asleep ” as well as “difficult sleeping through the night”, dyssomnia is estimated to affect nearly 1 in 3 children. Its detrimental effects include restlessness and irritability, adversely affecting the quality of life all children who suffer from it.(1)

Because current treatments for both dyssomnia and restlessness in adults are prescription drugs that may cause drowsiness,(2) more natural treatments are being sought for children. Now a new study(3) has found that combining valerian root with lemon balm may have a calming effect on children and help them deal with dyssmonia and restlessness.

Previous research found the valerian/lemon balm treatment to be comparable to prescription drugs in helping adults deal with sleep disorders and without the side effects.(4) In the new study, 914 patients under the 12 years of age but with an average of 8.3 years took either a combination of 160 mg valerian root dry extract with 80 mg lemon balm leaf dry extract or placebo for four weeks.

They observed symptoms that included restlessness, dyssomnia, physical weakness, rapid fatigability, lack of concentration, hyperactivity , aggressiveness, lack of appetite, excessive drowsiness, listlessness/dejection or “other”. Each symptom was rated from “0” (absent) to “4” (very severe). Finally, at the end of four weeks both researchers and parents graded the patients’ improvement from “1” (very good) to “5” (poor).

The researchers found that nearly 81% of the patients suffering from dyssomnia experienced “an improvement”, 70.4% of the patients with restlessness “improved clearly”, and nearly 38% of patients had “total improvement” for the other listed symptoms. Concerning parent opinion of their child’s improvement, 60.5% and 67.7% found the treatment to be “very good” or “good” for dyssomnia and restlessness, respectively.

For the researchers, “[valerian root and lemon balm] was effective in the treatment of younger children with restlessness and dyssomnia and it was very well tolerated.”
