A New Food Supplement?
Much excitement has been generated about this new food supplement "Bovine Colostrum" being used to optimize the immune systems of both healthy and chronically ill individuals. Being called "Natures most perfect food" or advertised as "The greatest discovery in hundreds of years!"
Truth is colostrum from cows has been used therapeutically for thousands of years in the United States and throughout the world. As early as the 1950s, colostrum was being prescribed extensively by conventional doctors for many ailments and later for antibiotic purposes prior to the introduction of sulfa drugs and penicillin. With killer pathogens on our doorstep, we should be looking at what is specifically designed for the survival of our species. Where better to start than at the beginning.
Colostrum is our first food. It is a thick yellowish liquid secreted by the mother's breast in the first 24 to 48 hours after birth. It provides a newborn mammal its first life giving nutrient rich food. It contains numerous essential immunoglobulins which develop the immune system and protease inhibitors that protect the gastrointestinal tract. As well as antibodies, growth hormones, and many other special substances designed to protect the body from a lifetime of invasion by various microorganisms and toxins.
Bovine colostrum is much higher in growth and immune factors than a human mother's colostrum and is biologically transferable to all mammals, including man. A cow produces approximately nine gallons of this liquid gold during the first thirty-six hours after giving birth. Each drop contains the promise of life, containing many growth factors as well as 80% more IgG (immunoglobulins) than those found in human colostrum. Its components are not found in such high concentrations anywhere else in nature.
To date there have been no reports of allergic reactions, drug interactions or side effects from bovine colostrum. Safe for children and even recommended by some pediatricians for addition to babies formula, especially those not being breast fed.
Laboratory analyses has found colostrum to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and to provide many of the basic and complex vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and amino acids needed for life. Bovine colostrum rebuilds the immune system, destroys viruses, bacteria and fungi, accelerates healing, burns fat, increase bone and lean muscle mass, it slows down and may even reverse aging. These natural components of colostrum, notably interferon, gamma globulin, growth hormone, IgF-1, IgF-2 and protease inhibitors are unique and can not be exactly reproduced chemically or genetically in a laboratory.
Medical science has shown in hundreds of published reports worldwide that aging, illness and death occur with the loss of immune and growth factors in our bodies. These and many other basic building block of life can be replaced with bovine colostrum. There was a study published in 1990 in The New England Journal of Medicine which concluded that GH (growth hormone) prevented some of the debilitating effects of aging.
A laboratory grown form of GH, extracted from cows, has been genetically engineered and is being marketed as HGH (human growth hormone) when it is actually bovine or synthetic. Wide claims of it's use as an effective anti-aging and AIDS drug are not only unproven, in some cases bad side effects have been reported.
The natural growth factors found abundantly in bovine colostrum, as shown in several studies, are capable of:
- Increasing T-cell production.
- Balancing blood glucose levels.
- Reducing insulin need.
- Metabolizing fat for weight loss.
- Increasing muscle and bone growth and repair.
- Promoting the repair and regeneration of the heart muscle and of new blood vessels.
- Lowers LDL cholesterol.
- Stimulates glucose transport in muscles, fueling the muscles to make greater use of protein, carbohydrates other supplements. Making it very good for use by athletes and dieters.
Also found naturally and in high concentrations in bovine colostrum is Proline-rich polypeptide (PRP) a hormone that regulates the thymus gland, stimulating the immune system and regulating an overactive immune system, as seen in (MS) multiple sclerosis and other auto immune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, allergies, and more.
ADD/ADHD may be helped with the addition of bovine colostrum to the diet. ADD/ADHD are now thought to be linked to a poor diet in childhood, lack of proper immune system development and the onslaught of dyes, preservatives, artificial flavorings, and pesticides, in our food. Also in one study it was estimated that up to 75% of children with ADD/ADHD were not breast fed.
Cytokines found in colostrum have shown anticancer activities, killing cancer cells while leaving the surrounding non cancerous tissues untouched. These Cytokines (interleukins 1, 6, 10, interferon G, and lymphokines) to date are the most scientifically researched protocols in the search for a cure for cancer.
Recent studies indicate colostrum's role in the reversal of many chronic problems associated with the gastrointestinal tract (GI) which cause pain, swelling and inflammation. Patients with infections like Candida albicans (yeast), cryptosporidia, rotavirus, herpes simplex, pathogenic strains of E.coli, and intestinal flu were shown to have marked improvements and in some cases a complete cure was reported.
Colostrum has wound-healing properties which benefit the skin, muscle, cartilage, and bone. Colostrum powder can be applied topically to sensitive teeth, gingivitis, ulcers, cuts, abrasions, and burns. Colostrum contains the twin healing properties of IGF-1 and TGF-B, whose muscle and cartilage repair properties are biochemicaly unsurpassed.
Powdered colostrum in a gel cap is best and can be taken with no problems even if you are lactose intolerant as the amount of colostrum per serving is so small and the percentage of lactose therein is even smaller. However if you are "allergic" to lactose you should consult a qualified practitioner. Also it's very important to take colostrum on an empty stomach with lots of water to aid its movement into the small intestinal where it does its work. A gelatin capsule protects it from destruction by saliva and stomach acids. Doses range from 500 mg. to 1000 mg. in the first two weeks and then tapering off to smaller amounts. Athletes and dieters may take a higher dose. There have been, to date, no cases of overdose reported.
As with ALL supplements, herbal or otherwise, if you are pregnant or have a medical condition, consult with a qualified medical practitioner before taking.

Antibiotic Over use is Creating Superbugs
Even when used carefully, all organisms can develop some resistance to antibiotics over time. "It is a perfectly natural phenomenon for a living organism to develop the means of survival in a hostile environment," wrote French microbiologist Jacques Acar in a 1997 article in World Health.
The historical scourge known as the bubonic plague killed up to one-third of Europe's population in the 1300s. But in modern times, it has been controlled handily with the help of antibiotic drugs such as streptomycin, gentamicin and chloramphenical.
That is, until 1995, when a plague infection in a 16-year-old boy from Madagascar failed to respond to the usual antibiotic treatments. This first documented case of an antibiotic-resistant plague, reported in the September 1997 New England Journal of Medicine, eventually succumbed to another antibiotic.
In the United States and globally, many other infectious germs, including those that cause pneumonia, ear infections, acne, gonorrhea, urinary tract infections, meningitis, and tuberculosis, can now outwit some of the most commonly used antibiotics and their synthetic counterparts, antimicrobials. According to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., drug resistance may have contributed to the 58 percent rise in infectious disease deaths among Americans between 1980 and 1992.
Antibiotic resistance isn't a new problem; resistant disease strains began emerging not long after the discovery of antibiotics more than 50 years ago. Penicillin and other antibiotics, which were initially viewed as miracle drugs for their ability to cure such serious and often life-threatening diseases as bacterial meningitis, typhoid fever, and rheumatic fever, soon were challenged by some defiant strains.
"What's different now," explains David Bell, M.D., an expert on antimicrobial resistance with the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "is that we've reached a situation where it's no longer an isolated problem of this bug or that bug; virtually all important human pathogens treatable with antibiotics have developed some resistance."
Experts say that doctors are sometimes quick to prescribe antibiotics for all sorts of symptoms, even though antibiotics work only against bacterial infections, not viruses such as the flu or the common cold. More than 50 million of the 150 million antibiotic prescriptions written each year for patients outside of hospitals are unnecessary, according to a recent CDC study.
Sometimes, doctors lack knowledge about the symptoms and natural course of respiratory illnesses, which contributes to overuse, according to a CDC editorial in the Sept. 17, 1997, Journal of the American Medical Association. Also, many doctors have told CDC they sometimes write prescriptions simply to meet patient demands.
Every time a patient takes penicillin or another antibiotic for a bacterial infection, the drug may kill most of the bacteria. But a few tenacious germs may survive by mutating or acquiring resistance genes from other bacteria. These surviving genes can multiply quickly, creating drug-resistant strains. The presence of these strains may mean that the patient's next infection will not respond to the first-choice antibiotic therapy. Also, the resistant bacteria may be transmitted to others in the patient's community.
Experts say the risk is greatest, but still not high, for those in hospitals, nursing homes, and other settings where people tend to be sick often. In these environments, people may be taking an array of antibiotics (one researcher estimates that 25 to 40 percent of hospital patients get intravenous antibiotics), increasing the chance of a resistant germ originating within their own bodies. Also, hospitalized patients are surrounded by others whose infectious diseases may spread, and their immune systems may be weakened and incapable of beating the infectious bugs.
Organisms that have already developed defenses against antibiotic attack include:
- Staphylococcus aureus. This bacterium, which is the biggest cause of infections in patients in U.S. hospitals, can infect burns, skin, and surgical wounds. Since 1996, at least four patients--three in the United States and one in Japan--reportedly were infected with a strain that was partially resistant to normal doses of the powerful, last-resort antibiotic vancomycin. Some strains of S. aureus have already shown resistance to all antibiotics other than vancomycin, raising the fear that an invincible strain is near at hand.
- Enterococcus. This organism can cause everything from urinary tract to heart valve infections. Some strains can outmatch many previously effective antibiotics.
- Streptococcus pneumoniae. Up to 30 percent of the strains of this bacterium, which can cause pneumonia, meningitis, and ear infections, are at least partially resistant to antibiotics in the penicillin family, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Despite the frightening trend, most people aren't likely to encounter a "superbug" that can outsmart all antibiotics, says Mark Goldberger, M.D., director of the Food and Drug Administration's division of special pathogen and immunologic drug products. "For the average person walking around on the street, the risk at the moment remains low."
Excerpts from the FDA website http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/1998/698_bugs.html
What you can do to protect yourself naturally.
- Garlic - the infection fighter
"Garlic has been used for thousands of year in folk medicine as an infection fighter. Research studies have confirmed that it has serious immune system enhancing capacities/potential. Don't cook it if you want to use it to boost your immune system. For the full effect don't chew it just swallow it and let its powerful alkaloids (active ingredients) be absorbed directly into your digestive tract. If you have a delicate stomach you will want to start with half a small clove." Miranda Castro FSHom
- Bee Propolis- The Most Natural Antibiotic
The bactericidal qualities of this natural medicine have been known since the beginning of written history. Propolis is now considered an important part of dietetics and a natural cure by the World Health Organization. A natural antibiotic, propolis has no side effects and has also been shown to fight bacterial strains that have become resistant to synthetic antibiotics.
- Olive Leaf Extract-The Total Antimicrobial
The olive branch, a centuries-old symbol for peace, may contain in its leaves our best weapon against a host of disease-producing bacteria. As more bacteria mutate and resist commonly prescribed antibiotics, scientists are searching for alternatives. One option may lie in the leaves of the green olive tree.
- Neem-The Ultimate Herb
The seeds, bark and leaves contain compounds with proven antiseptic, antiviral, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer and antifungal uses. Neem is one of the most powerful blood-purifiers and detoxifiers in Ayurvedic usage. Over thousands of years, neem has been used by hundreds of millions of people and no hazards have been documented for normal dosages.
- Tea Tree Oil-Immunostimulant
As early as 1923, clinical trials in Australia began to provide scientific evidence for tea tree's antiseptic and bactericidal properties. Its 'cure-all' effects made it standard issue in the first aid kits of the Australian Army and Navy during World War II. Tea Tree oil is an effective bactericide killing a broad spectrum of bacteria and a range of stubborn fungi. It is safe for healthy tissue and does not inhibit normal cell growth and rejuvenation. Tea Tree oil is a powerful organic solvent and will actually dissolve the lumps of white blood cells which make pus. The oil contains numerous chemicals known as terpenoids. The oil kills fungus and bacteria, including those resistant to some antibiotics. A single blind study has shown topical application of 5% tea tree oil in people with acne is as helpful as benzoylperoxide and has fewer side effects. Tea tree oil contributes to an extremely effective antibacterial shampoo.
- Grapefruit Seed Extract-The Virus Killer
There are many herbs and essential oils that kill enterococcus, staphylococcus and other bacteria as well as viruses, which antibiotics are unable to treat. One of the most popular is grapefruit seed extract, or GSE, made from the seeds and connecting tissue of citrus fruit. Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) is being used to kill bacteria like Strep, Staph, Salmonella, E. Coli, and also to fight Candida, Herpes, Influenza, parasites, fungi and traveler's diarrhea. This has been proven in laboratories all over the world, and is supported by feedback from doctors, veterinarians, farmers and consumers. Non-toxic, biodegradable, economical, with no harmful side-effects
- Golden Seal and Echinacea-Powerful Infection Fighters
Golden Seal was listed from 1860 to 1926 in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia. It was primarily used for inflammations of the mucous membranes. Studies indicate the presents of hydrastine, berberine and canadine which are antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antibacterial. Echinacea is considered a valuable alternative to antibiotics. This herb has very strong immune-activating abilities it activates the white blood cells to fight off both bacterial and viral infections. Modern scientific studies now validate Echinacea's traditional usage as a topical agent to help the body repair skin wounds, and internally to enhance the immune system. The active constituents in Echinacea which are thought to bolster the body's defense are known as polysaccharides. Polysaccharides stimulate the activity of macrophages, white blood cells which destroy bacteria, viruses, other foreign invaders, and even wayward cells. It also activates the body's production of interferon, a specific protein which protects cells against the invasion of viruses. Used in combination these are very powerful.

Hormonal Balance and Herbs
The change? Why do people call this time of life "the change"? What am I suppose to change into? It's like saying I'm going through some weird kind of metamorphosis! "She's going through the change" someone whispers, and suddenly everyone gets quite and moves away. What horrible thing will emerge? Or here's a good one "Have you been taking your medicine?" To which I can't help but respond with a resounding "NO" and a demented laugh!
The hormonal system is complicated and regulates the way our bodies function. Estrogen and progesterone are the two main hormones whose balance is very important in a woman's body. Keeping this delicate balance between estrogen and progesterone is not easy. Diet, lifestyle and stress can also affect this system. When there is an imbalance, the symptoms are not hard to spot!
Some symptoms that may be caused by an estrogen deficiency:
- Hot flashes
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Irregular menstrual flow
- Bloating
- Cramping
- Breast tenderness
- Mood swings
- Insomnia
- Vaginal dryness
- Loss of sex drive
- Depression
- Difficult breathing
- Heart palpitations
- Elevated blood pressure
When estrogen dominance occurs it can create even more of an imbalance. Yet the symptoms are often the same.
All of these symptoms can be greatly improved and even reversed by balancing estrogen with natural progesterone. Progesterone is more often overlooked and can help balance estrogen levels. Here's how it works. Natural estrogen is found in many foods and herbs in the form of phytoesterogen (plant estrogen). Phytoestrogen so closely resemble human progesterone that the body reacts to it as if it were progesterone and brings the body's estrogen levels into balance.
Many herbal formulas are designed to increase the body's ability to balance its own estrogen by using plants which contain high concentration of these phytoesterogens. Some more complete formulas will also contain vitamins, minerals and herbs to alleviate the symptoms. There are many herbal formulas to choose from and the formula you choose should depend on what symptoms you are having. So read your labels and as always consult a qualified practitioner.

Herb of the Month
Echinacea
Echinacea purpurea
Other Names: Purple coneflower, Black Sampson, Coneflower, Eastern Purple Coneflower, Indian head, Kansas Snakeroot, Missouri Snakeroot, Rudbeckia, Scurvy root
Habitat: Perennial native to N. America from Virginia to Ohio and Michigan, south to Georgia and Louisiana. Found growing in open fields, dry open woods, prairies and barrens. Cultivation is easy Echinacea prefers light, loamy, well-drained soil and a sunny position, tolerates shade. A very ornamental plant, it attracts butterflies to the garden, but watch out for slugs they seem to love this plant.
Daisy-like flowers with large rich purple or pink rays surround a high brownish-orange cone, the flower heads can reach 4 to 5 inches in diameter. Stems are long 2 to 3 feet high, slender but stout, rough and bristly. Leaves are also bristly, dark green, slightly serrated, lanceolate, mostly alternate, and long petioled at the base, more sessile near the top of the stem, and have 3 prominate veins running the length of the leaf. The roots are tapering, cylindrical, slightly spiral, and fibrous with as aromatic smell. It is in flower from July to October.
Properties: Echinacea was used extensively by Native Americans and the early American settlers also adopted its use. It has been used for hundreds of years in alternative medicine to support the immune system, and to purify the blood, especially during season changes and during the cold and flu season. Scientific studies have now confirmed the presents of natural chemicals, echinacosides, which increase white blood cell activity.
Other valuable constituents include betaine, echinolone, inulin, humulene, polysaccharides, two phytosterols and fatty acids, oleic, cerotic, linolic and palmatic. Extracts of Echinacea were found to enhance the cellular immune function of normal individuals and patients with AIDS and chronic fatigue syndrome. Unlike antibiotics, which directly kills bacteria, Echinacea makes our own immune cells more efficient in attacking bacteria, viruses and abnormal cells, including cancer cells.
The root now confirmed by modern science as adaptogen, alterative, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, depurative, diaphoretic, digestive, sialagogue. Echinacea is considered to be a most effective detoxicant for the urinary tract, circulatory, lymphatic, and respiratory systems. The roots and the whole plant are considered particularly beneficial in the external treatment of psoriasis, eczema and inflammatory skin conditions, sores, wounds, burns, and sore throat, possessing cortisone-like and antibacterial activity as well as showing skin regenerating properties. It also contains chemicals that are highly insecticidal particularly to mosquitoes and house flies.
Folklore: Once used as an antidote to treat snakebites and other venomous bites by Native Americans. Believed in old English herbals to cure syphilis and rabies.
TRY THIS RECIPE
Infusion: To 1 tbls. dry herb add 1 cup boiling water, steep 20 min., drink in mouthful doses throughout the day, at the beginning of a cold or for general fatigue.

Herb and Ailment Questions & Answers:
Q. I heard on the T.V. that to much soy is dangerous. Is this true? I'm taking the Soy Isoflavone Extract. One a day just doesn't do it for me. Can you take two a day with safety? Thank you!!
A. There is a lot of controversy about soy and that to much soy, (for adults, more than 25 mg per day) may have a negative affect on the thyroid.
The March 1999 issue of Natural Health magazine has a feature on soy that quotes Daniel R. Doerge, Ph.D., a researcher at the Food and Drug Aministration's National Center for Toxicological Research. Dr. Doerge has researched soy's anti-thyroid properties, and has said "...I see substantial risks from taking soy supplements or eating huge amounts of soyfoods for their putative disease preventive value. There is definitely potential for interaction with the thyroid."
Researchers have identified that isoflavones act as potent anti-thyroid agents, and are capable of suppressing thyroid function, and causing or worsening hypothyroidism. Soy is a phytoestrogen, and therefore acts in the body much like a hormone, so it's no surprise that it interacts with the delicate balance of the thyroid's hormonal systems. There are clear indications that limited use has its benefits, while over use will have its drawbacks. There are numerous other products that may be of benefit for Menopause or Perimenopausal Problems.

Q. I have a friend that could possibly have bone spurs in his foot. Is there an herb that could help?
A. Bone spurs may be the result of a lack of Betaine Hydrochloride (HCI) or Bromelain digestive enzymes or an imbalance of Calcium and Magnesium, which would increase the likelihood of abnormal calcium deposits.

Q. I have a question about the Zybol XP performance complex protein. Will it help me gain weight rapidly? Right now I weigh 89-93 pounds and I cant eat allot because I fill full right-a-way....Will this protein drink help me gain at least 15-20 pounds?
A. You need to take in higher amounts of carbs when you have a fast metabolism.
To much protein will actually increase metabolism further. Protein must be taken in balance with carbs.
A combination of carbs and protein with a good digestive enzyme complex to insure you are metabolizing all that you eat would be more effective.
Thus :
Zybol xp - http://www.herbalremedies.com/zybxpprot2lb.html
Just carbs - http://www.herbalremedies.com/justcarbs2lb.html
Enzymes - http://www.herbalremedies.com/ahh-09.html
And since you feel full quickly we recommend you eat often
Meal bars - http://www.herbalremedies.com/proznutbalba.html
Mix a combo carbs, protein shake in the A.M. with as little liquid as possible and a banana. Take your enzyme cap in the A.M. as well - will speed digestion. Anytime you don't feel full eat a meal bar. Get in all your regular meals if possible as well.

Q. Does your product Grobust really work? How soon does it work?
A. Some people have great success, some people have a minor affect, and some people have no affect. But research shows that 80% have substantial growth. The product needs to be used for at least three months, but changes will probably be noticed within 30 days. Temporary soreness in the breast, similiar to original breast development or lactation may result. This is a sure sign your Grobust is working (a sign of growth). Most effective when taken "without" caffine or carbonated drinks.

Allergy Season is around the corner!
Isn't Spring Be-choo-tiful! Unfortunately for some of us that's how it is. When the flowers bloom so do we, or at least our heads feel that way. A great number of people don't realize that allergies can be very DANGEROUS! When the sinuses swell and stay blocked for a period of time, bacteria begins to grow. This bacteria then slowly drains into our system, infecting the whole body, which causes the immune system to overwork.
Then we develop symptoms such as headache, nausea, and diarrhea, we are left drained, unable to fight the terrible fatigue. Not to mention what will happen if we come into contact with a cold or flu bug in this weakened state! Even pneumonia can develop from something as simple as the sniffles.
Keeping your immune system strong is important yes, but still one can get a clogged head from the onslot of pollen. The key is to also keep those sinuses clear and healthy. Here are a few suggestions on how to do just that.
Use a good inhalant when you are outdoors. I keep a bottle of peppermint oil handy, dab a little on my hanky and give it a good sniff every once in a while, but you may choose eucalyptus, wintergreen, or oregano, so many to choose from, find them all here.
Steam inhalation is also a good way to loosen phlegm and clear the sinuses. It's easy to do, just boil water, add a drop or two of your favorite oil, move it away from the stove of course and place your face over the pan with a towel over your head and the pan, then breath deep. The steam is also good for your skin!
Nasal Sprays are another good suggestion especially for those who are already suffering from congestion. You can find this and many other great products to help you enjoy this wonderful Springtime, clicking HERE After all, being able to smell the flowers is half the fun!
