This is the first book to reveal the complete history as well as the traditional and modern uses of Jiaogulan gynostemma ( gymnostemma pentaphyllum ).
The purpose of this book is to bring to light the Jiaogulan herb that, although relatively unknown, has been extensively studied in various research institutions during the past fifteen years, and sold in the U.S. for the past six years. There has been a growing interest in this Jiaogulan, which is not only very similar in characteristics to Panax ginseng, but has some advantages over it. Most of the Jiaogulan studies have been conducted in China and Japan, with others in the U.S., Ireland, West Germany, Italy and Czechoslovakia. The findings show that jiaogulan, pronounced jee-ow-goo-lahn, botanical name Gymnostemma pentaphyllum, has extraordinary health-supporting effects on a number of body systems. Results of research studies are revealed and explained in Chapter 3, both for the layman and the medical practitioner.
"Yes, but a Chinese herb for a Westerner?" This is the reaction I get from many people I meet in my travels. What they don’t realize, for example, is that pseudoephedrine, an effective component of the Chinese herb Ma huang, has been used for years as the main ingredient in Sudafed® and Actifed®, a couple of the most well-known decongestants on the market.
What is helping to establish the validity of Chinese herbs, and herbal remedies in general, is the current trend of the natural products companies to substantiate the claims of effectiveness of a product through scientific testing. This cooperation of traditional disciplines and scientific research can be summed up in the expression "ancient wisdom meets modern science". Dr. Jialiu Liu, my co-author, heads up one such cooperative team of researchers who have studied jiaogulan. He is a Professor of Pathology at Guiyang Medical College, located in the Guizhou Province in China. Dr. Liu is an active member of many medical associations and has been awarded numerous honors by the Chinese government for his research projects. The College, a Western style Medical and Research institution, has also won many awards from the Chinese government for its achievements in scientific research. In 1987 the provincial government of Guizhou assigned to Guiyang Medical College a long-term research project: "Studying and utilizing the resources of the natural reserves (specifically the Mt. Fanjing Nature Reserve, a protected rain forest) in Guizhou". A research team of sixteen scientists from various specialties was organized, with Dr. Jialiu Liu appointed as its chief. For many years they studied hundreds of Chinese herbs, then concentrated on jiaogulan, which they found to have many therapeutic and health-giving properties.
Eventually, Jiaogulan found its way into many prescription treatments at the Guiyang Medical College Hospital, as well as many hospitals throughout China. In the last few years, jiaogulan has gradually made its way onto the natural products scene in the United States, and is now being sold by many companies, either as a single herb, in teas or in multi-herb formulas. Hence the time has come for an informative book on jiaogulan, from its seed in the ground to your herbal medicine cabinet.
