QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Q:
Subject: Hello
I JUST READ AN ISSUE OF YOUR NEWS LETTER AND I THINK IT IS FANTASTIC, AS
IT MENTIONED NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS THAT PEOPLE USUALLY MAKE AND DONT KEEP.
WELL I MADE A NEW YEARS RESOLUTION TO QUIT SMOKING AND START EXERCISING. SO FAR
I HAVE QUIT SMOKING AND AM EXERCISING. UNFORTUNATELY I HAVE GAINED ABOUT 15 POUNDS AND CANT SEEM TO GET RID OF IT. I TRY TO EAT RIGHT AND ALSO EAT A LOT LESS THAN I HAVE IN THE PAST BUT ALL
TO NO AVAIL. I HAVE A HUGE APPETITE AND WAS WONDERING IF YOU COULD
RECOMMEND AN APPETITE SUPPRESSANT THAT IS ABSOLUTELY SAFE. I AM 59 YEARS OLD AND AM
QUITE HEALTHY AS FAR THE TESTS GOES. HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON.
Many thanks
A:
Dear Customer, Congratulations on quitting smoking I would have to say you half way
have met your resolutions but hopefully these few product ideas may help
with the other half. One product that is for an appetite suppressant and is
all natural, stimulant free containing no ephedra, caffeine or other
dangerous stimulants. Is Appetite Suppressor RX . Another I would recommend is Relora not only would it
offer appetite control but it also offers stress-related weight and appetite
control especially needed after quitting smoking. Last if you really are
having problems getting rid of the weight I would recommend
CLA again with no stimulants what so
ever. CLA has been shown to reduce body fat and increase muscle tone..
Thank you for your interest in Herbal Remedies.com and the opportunity to serve you.

Grapeseed Extract: Another Way to Help Curb A Worldwide Epidemic
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, March 30, 2006
With statistics that include afflicting one in three American adults, increasing in incidence by nearly 30% in just 10 years (from 1992-2002), and causing over 50,000 American deaths in 2002,(1) high blood pressure has been officially classified as a worldwide epidemic.(2)
Fortunately, nutritional supplements in the form of omega-3 fatty acids (3) and fiber (4) have been effective in helping lower blood pressure. Now a new study,(5) presented at the American Chemical Society Meeting and Exposition has found that grapeseed extract may provide another way to help lower your blood pressure.
Grapeseed extract’s (GPSE) health properties have been found to lie in its remarkable ability to help minimize oxidative stress(6) The antioxidant properties of GPSE has even been found to be “significantly better” than both vitamin C (7) and vitamin E .(8)
In the study, researchers divided 20 male and female volunteers diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome into three groups and gave them either 150 mg of GPSE, 300 mg of GPSE, or placebo for one month. Not only did they see a “significant” drop in systolic blood pressure (the top number in your blood pressure reading) of 12 mm Hg, the 300 mg GPSE also reduced oxidized LDL-cholesterol, a known risk for heart disease .(9)
So, whether you’re looking to lower your blood pressure or help protect yourself against heart disease, grapeseed extract can be an excellent supplement to your diet.

Beyond Bone Health: Calcium and Vitamin D Together Found Effective for Diabetes
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, April 12, 2006, abstracted from “Vitamin D and Calcium Intake in Relation to Type 2 Diabetes in Women” in the March 2006 issue of Diabetes Care
When taken together, calcium and vitamin D intake significantly increase bone health and help prevent osteoporosis -related fractures. These fractures result in 500,000 hospitalizations, 800,000 emergency room visits, 2.6 million physician visits, 180,000 nursing home placements, and nearly $18 billion in healthcare costs each year.(1) Dosages for calcium and vitamin D in different studies have ranged from 500 mg calcium and 700 IU vitamin D(2) to 800 mg calcium and 400 IU vitamin D.(3)
Now a new study(4) has found that this bone-healthy combination may also help prevent another illness that currently costs our healthcare system more than $132 billion each year(5): type 2 diabetes .
In the study, researchers measured calcium and vitamin D intake every 2-4 years for 20 years in nearly 84,000 women who participated in the Nurses’ Health Study and had no history of diabetes, cardiovascular disease , or cancer . When taken separately, women consuming 400 IU vitamin D per day from supplements had a 13% lower risk of diabetes compared to women consuming less than 100 IU per day. Women taking greater than 1,200 milligrams per day of calcium were 21% less likely to get diabetes compared to women who had intakes less than 600 mg per day. But it was when the two supplements were taken together that the greatest protection against diabetes was observed. Women who combined a daily intake of greater than 1,200 mg calcium and greater than 800 IU vitamin D had a 33% lower risk of type 2 diabetes compared with an intake of less than 600 mg and 400 IU calcium and vitamin D, respectively. For the researchers, “The results of this…study suggest a potential beneficial role for both vitamin D and calcium intake in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.” Greg Arnold is a Chiropractic Physician practicing in Danville, CA. Study Highlights Hospital Use of Vitamin C Instead of Chemotherapy to Help Treat Cancer
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, April 10, 2006, abstracted from “Intravenously administered vitamin C as cancer therapy: three cases” in the March 26, 2006 issue of the Canadian Medical Association Journal
One of the 20th century’s biggest proponents of vitamin C in promoting health was Linus Pauling, the only person ever to win two Nobel Prizes.(1) Known to take 18 grams of vitamin C per day,(2) Pauling used vitamin C frequently to help treat cancer . Pauling’s research(3) found that terminal cancer patients who took 10 grams of vitamin C per day survived more than 4.2 times as long (more than 210 days) than controls (50 days). In another study of non-terminal cancer,(4) patients taking 10 grams of vitamin C per day had an average survival time about 300 days greater than that of the controls.
Despite those early studies, studies by the Mayo Clinic did not reproduce this benefit of vitamin C in cancer patients(5, 6) yet vitamin C continues to be used as an alternative cancer therapy.7 These contrasting results seem to lie in whether the vitamin C is given orally or intravenously. Linus Pauling’s studies combined IV and oral administration, whereas the Mayo Clinic studies used only oral administration.
Recent research has found that very large doses of vitamin C will increase plasma concentrations “only modestly” when given orally whereas the same dosage given intravenously raises plasma concentrations more than 25-times higher to levels that are toxic to cancer cells.(8)
As a result of IV vitamin C administration producing much higher blood levels, a new study(9) has found that hospitals are offering vitamin C treatment in place of chemotherapy and are seeing cancers go into remission.
In one case, a 51 year-old woman with kidney cancer that had spread to her lungs took 65 grams of vitamin C per week for 10 months as her only medical treatment while she personally took thymus protein extract (no dosage given), N-acetylcysteine (1500 mg per day) and whole thyroid extract (30 mg per day). Although the cancer went into remission after 10 months, she continued to smoke and the cancer reappeared four years later which did not respond to the vitamin C therapy.
In the second case, a 49 year-old man with bladder cancer received 30 g of vitamin C twice per week for 3 months, followed by 30 g once every 1–2 months for four years as his only cancer treatment. The patient’s personal supplement regimen was extensive and included alpha lipoic acid (100 mg daily), flaxseed oil (3,000 mg daily), probiotics , selenium (400 mcg daily), glucosamine/chondroitin (2,000 mg daily) and glutathione (no dosage given). Fortunately, the cancer went into remission and the patient remains cancer-free nine years after diagnosis with no symptoms of cancer.
Finally, a third case highlighted a 66 year-old woman with “untreated stage III diffuse B-cell lymphoma”, which has a “dismal prognosis.” The patient refused chemotherapy but instead elected to have radiation therapy in conjunction with vitamin C treatment, taking 15 grams of vitamin C twice per week for two months, 15 grams once to twice per week for seven months, and then 15 grams once every 2–3 months for 1 year. At the end of one year, the patient was in remission and “remains in normal health” more than 10 years later. In this case, the researchers admit that “a cure occurred in connection with intravenous vitamin C infusions.”
In conclusion, vitamin C’s usefulness in treating cancer required high blood levels of the antioxidant which are achievable only with IV administration, especially for advanced cancers.

Study Continues to Show Anti-Stress Properties of Relora
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, April 6, 2006, abstracted from “Study Indicates That Relora Reduces Stress and Anxiety” posted on the Natural Nutrition and Products Industry Center Website March 31, 2006
Defined as America’s #1 health problem in the 1980’s,(1) Americans continue to perceive they are under more stress than ever before. While a 1996 survey found that 75% feel they have "great stress" one day a week and 33% have “great stress” more than twice a week, it’s estimated that 75- 90% of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress-related problems.(2)
Of all the sources of stress out there, job stress is the leading source for adults. Recent research(3) has found that 25% view their jobs as the number one stressor in their lives and job stress is more strongly associated with health complaints than financial or family problems.
While there are a myriad of ways to help deal with stress, including massage(4) and yoga,(5) research on supplementation has started to focus on Relora , a blend of the two herbal extracts Magnolia officinalis and Phellodendron amurense. Relora received little attention in previous research as a stress reducer in animals(6) but a new study finding Relora to be useful for weight loss sparked interest when it helped relieve anxiety and stress, known triggers for weight gain.(7)
Now a new study presented recently(8) continues to show Relora’s effectiveness in helping fight stress.
In the study, 40 healthy 25-50 year old women with anxiety received either a placebo or 750 mg of Relora daily for 6 weeks. Researchers used the Spielberger Trait Total and Anxiety Index(9) scores to measure stress levels. They found that anxiety and stress scores “improved significantly” in the Relora group compared to placebo, with the Relora group having twice as much average reduction in sleep latency (11 minutes) as the placebo group (5 minutes). Sleep latency is the amount of time it takes to fall asleep.
Overall, researchers found that Relora helped to “significantly reduce anxiety and stress.”

Ginger Kills Ovarian Cancer Cells in Lab Study
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, April 6, 2006, abstracted from “Ginger: An Ovarian Cancer Killer” posted on Forbes.com April 5, 2006
As one of the 20 top-selling herbal supplements in the United States,(1) ginger root has been found to effectively treat a number ailments including stomach ache, diarrhea, and nausea.(2) When it comes to women’s health, ginger root has proven beneficial in helping treat morning sickness (3) with dosages ranging from 125(4) to 350 mg(5) of ginger root extract per day.
Now a new study(6) has found that ginger root extract may provide another benefit for women by helping protect against ovarian cancer .
With over 20,000 new cases and over 15,000 deaths expected to occur in 2006 because of ovarian cancer, it is the eighth most common cancer in women and fifth most common cause of cancer death in women.(7)
Because the main treatments for ovarian cancer are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy (where in some cases 2 or even all 3 of these treatments will be used),(8) any alternative treatments that can prove effective in prevention are highly sought after.
In the study, researchers dissolved ginger powder in a solution and applied it to ovarian cancer cells in a laboratory. Not only did ginger cause the cancer cells to spontaneously die (called apoptosis), ginger extract also caused the cancer cells to digest or attack each other (called autophagy).
For the researchers, the value in this study is that "Most ovarian cancer patients develop recurrent disease that eventually becomes resistant to standard chemotherapy. If ginger can cause…cell death…it may circumvent resistance to conventional chemotherapy.”
The researchers also speculated that the anti-cancer property of ginger may lie in its ability to help decrease inflammation,(9) a known trigger of cancer.(10)
