Henbane General Information
Henbane grows up to 2 feet tall and has large, pale green, oval leaves with deeply toothed edges. It has bell-shaped flowers with mustard-yellow petals and purlplish-brown throats and veins. Since ancient times, Henbane has had a sinister reputation as an ingredient in witches’ brews. This herb has narcotic alkaloids such as hyoscyamine, scopolamine, and atropine. All parts of the plant are poisonous. At one time Henbane was used as a sedative to ease pain and spasms, but finding a safe dose proved fatal for many; however, the leaves were safely used externally as a dressing for treating the pains of rheumatism and the seeds mixed with garden mint were placed on the forehead to help promote sleep.

Henbane Uses & Scientific Evidence For
In herbal medicine, Henbane is used as a sedative and pain killer. It works particularly well in treating the pain of the urinary tract for conditions such as kidney stones and abdominal cramping. Its anti-spasmodic property makes Henbane a great treatment for the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease by relieving the tremor and rigidity during the early stages of the illness. This herb in the form of a cigarette has also been used to treat asthma and bronchitis. The oil can be used externally for neuralgia, sciatica, and rheumatism. In homeopathic medicine Henbane is used for dry, spasmodic coughs, epilepsy, and in other conditions in which twitching, jerking, and cramps occur.
