Cannabis sativa is best known as marijuana; however, the seeds and oil of Hemp do not contain sufficient quantities of tetrahydrocannabinol or any of the other psychoactive substances that are produced by marijuana. Hemp seeds contain about 25% protein, 31% fat (in the form of a nutritious oil), and 34% carbohydrates, in addition to many vitamins and minerals. Hemp seeds are second only to soybeans in protein content, and they serve a variety of functions in the human body such as acting like enzymes, antibodies, and the structural components of tissues, hormones and blood protein. Hemp oil contains 57% linoleic (LA) and 19% linolenic (LNA) acids, in a 3-to-1 ratio that matches our nutritional needs. These are the essential fatty acids (EFAs) that the body needs, but cannot make.
Hemp seed oil provides a wealth of antioxidants (vitamin E), carotene, phytosterols, phospholipids and a number of minerals, including calcium, magnesium, sulfur, potassium, phosphorus, along with modest amounts of iron and zinc, and it is a good source of chlorophyll.
