General Heartburn/ Gastroesophageal Reflux Information
Heartburn is a condition that occurs when hydrochloric acid from the stomach backs up into the
esophagus, resulting in burning and pain in the stomach and/or chest. Heartburn, also known as
Gastroesophageal Reflux (or simply “acid reflux“), is very common; it affects roughly 60 million
Americans each year. Heartburn can affect anyone at any age. Heartburn is usually Chronic
heartburn can lead to a condition called Barrett’s esophagus, which results in changes in the cells
lining the esophagus that can lead to cancer.

Possible Causes of Heartburn/ Gastroesophageal Reflux
Heartburn occurs when digestive acids in the stomach back up into the esophagus, causing the
sensitive tissues to become irritated and inflamed. Normally, the esophageal sphincter closes the
esophagus off so stomach acids cannot enter, but if the sphincter does not do its job, acids bubble
up into the esophagus, causing burning and pain characteristic of heartburn. Heartburn can be
triggered by consuming spicy, fatty and/or fried foods; alcohol; coffee; citrus; chocolate; and
tomato-based foods. People with hiatal hernia, ulcers, gallbladder disorders, stressful lifestyles,
allergies and enzyme deficiencies are at a greater risk of developing acid reflux.

Possible Symptoms of Heartburn / Gastroesophageal Reflux
The most common symptom of heartburn is pain and burning in the chest just behind the breast
bone. The pain can vary in intensity from mild to severe; in some cases, the pain is often mistaken
for heart disease. Other symptoms include bloating, gas, shortness of breath, nausea and an acidic
taste in the throat.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Heartburn / Gastroesophageal Reflux
When a bout of heartburn hits, drink a large glass of water. This often neutralizes the acid and
pushes it back down into the stomach. Drinking raw potato juice, fresh cabbage juice or celery
juice is also helpful. Consume smaller, more frequent meals and chew food well. Do not eat less
than three hours before bedtime and do not lie down until three hours have passed since eating.
Avoid acidic fruits, carbonated beverages, fats, fried foods, processed foods, mint, tobacco, sugar,
tomatoes, onions and any highly seasoned or spicy foods. Eat plenty of raw vegetables and eat
papaya and pineapple to aid digestion. Adhere to a moderate exercise program, but do not
exercise after eating. Avoid stress and anger whenever possible. Wear clothing that fits loosely
around the waist, especially while sleeping. If heartburn lasts for more than two weeks, seek
medical attention. Be aware of the signs of heart attack: if heartburn pain is ongoing, if the pain
radiates down the left arm or if it is also accompanied by weakness, dizziness or shortness of
breath, seek emergency treatment immediately.
