Gumweed General Information
Gumweed grows 1 to 3 feet tall with numerous yellow flowers. The brachts at the base of the flower are shiny, sticky, and curved downward, hence the name “squarrose.” Native American Indians boiled the root and made a tea for use as a liver tonic. A decoction was used on running sores and the flowering tops were used as a blood purifier. They also used Gumweed for bronchial conditions and reactions to poison ivy. Cattle, sheep, and horses will not eat this plant, but sheep will occasionally if there is no other forage. Gumweed has antispasmodic, aromatic, cardiac relaxant, demulcent, diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, hypotensive, sedative, and tonic properties.
