Griffonia General Information
Griffonia simplicifolia is a West African seed from a plant commonly used as food and medicine. Griffonia is a botanical source of 5-HTP, a precursor to the neurotransmitter, serotonin, which promotes restful sleep and balanced moods. It has been found that decreased levels of the hormone, serotonin, are associated with depression, insomnia, obsessive/compulsive disorders, and eating disorders that lead to obesity or bulimia. The bark of Griffonia is said to have antiseptic properties.

Griffonia Uses & Scientific Evidence For
Studies involving 5-HTP, the main component of Griffonia, were found to be effective in reducing depression and anxiety. In another study, 5-HTP was given to obese patients and was found to reduce their carbohydrate intake and promote significant weight loss. Griffonia has also been found to reduce insomnia as well. The leaf juice has been used to treat kidney disease, and is in compounds used against vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation.

Griffonia Dosage Information
Griffonia comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. To minimize possible side effects, begin with a low dose of 5-HTP (50 mg three times a day) for one week and then increase the amount to 50 mg twice a day for one week, and so on by 50 mg increments each week, up to the dose recommended for your condition. For the quickest absorption, take 5-HTP on an empty stomach. It is best to read product label directions for guidelines on the dosage recommended for your specific condition.

Griffonia Safety & Interaction Information
Known side effects are generally mild and may include, constipation, gas, nausea, drowsiness, or a decreased sex drive. Combining 5-HTP (Griffonia) with conventional antidepressants, such as Prozac, Wellbutrin, or Effexor, may cause anxiety, confusion, increased heart rate, excessive perspiration, and diarrhea. Do not try 5-HTP within four weeks of using an MAO inhibitor. Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known.
