Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), is a wild perennial herb native to North America. The Native Americans used Goldenseal internally as a medicine, and externally as a wash. They also used the root to make dye. Goldenseal is an antibacterial and antiseptic. Use especially when mucus turns thick and discolored. Use short term only with other herbs.

While both the herb and the root are useful herbal supplements, the thick-knotted yellow root is more potent, having a higher alkaloid content, than the herb (leaves, stems and flowers). Golden Seal is a very important traditional herb. Golden Seal was listed from 1860 to 1926 in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia. It was primarily used for inflammations of the mucous membranes.

This herb gets its name from the golden yellow color of the root. Goldenseal, a supplement, has been considered to have strong medicinal properties and does not harm the beneficial bacteria that are necessary in the digestive tract. The alkaloid, Berberine, has the added benefit of increasing blood flow through the spleen, where it also increases the immune-building activity of the large supply of white blood cells there. Considered by many herbalists to be one of the most powerful herbs.
