English Daisy General Information
The name Bellis is a designation first used by Pliny, and means "pretty". Perennis means “through the years,” “continuing,” or “perennial.” During the Middle Ages, the Crusaders made an ointment from the Daisy plant which they used to treat bruises, broken bones, and wounds. It was also used for catarrh and migraines. When made into a decoction, Daisy was used for heavy menstruation, rheumatism, and bronchitis. Also during that time, they chewed the leaves to cure mouth ulcers, and some believed that eating three heads of Daisies after having a tooth pulled alleviated toothaches forever. This herb has mildly anodyne, antispasmodic, antitussive, demulcent, digestive, emollient, expectorant, laxative, ophthalmic, purgative and tonic properties.

There is a substance in Bellis that contracts the muscles in the veins, which improves circulation making Bellis perennis, or English Daisy, a good blood purifier and a remedy for dispelling congealed and coagulated blood, and for reducing the appearance of varicose veins. This plant promotes healing by relieving the pressure of wounds and bruises. It also soothes the pain of damaged nerves and aides in the repair of damaged muscles and tissues. English Daisy is used to treat pleurisy, peri-pneumonia, rheumatism, arthritis, liver and kidney disorders, and stomach complaints as well. There are some that believe Daisies are effective in treating breast cancer.
