Colostrum General Information
Colostrum is the thin, yellowish fluid secreted by the mammary glands of mammalian mothers during the first 24-48 hours after birth. In the United States, Colostrum is taken from dairy cows with 24 hours after the birth of a calf. Only dairy cows that meet USDA health standards and have been raised on a ranch with feed supplemented with nutrients can supply Colostrum. The calf needs four gallons of the nine that the cow produces. A USDA certified dairy collects the remaining Colostrum. The Colostrum is then frozen, taken to a processing plant, carefully thawed and evaluated for quality and immunoglobulins content. About 30% of the Colostrum is rejected at this point. The fat is then removed, after which the Colostrum is spay dried at low heat. The Colostrum is repeatedly tested during processing for freedom from bacterial contamination.
