Chondroitin Sulfate General Information
Chondroitin was first extracted and purified in the 1960’s. Chondroitin is derived from powdered shark cartilage / cow-trachea cartilage or by synthetic means. The consensus of expert and industry opinions find this supplement to be awesome for Osteoarthritis, but it has been found to work even better on some when combined with Glucosamine.
Twenty one million Americans suffer from chronic joint pain due to Osteoarthritis, and that number is expected to double within the next two decades as the population ages. The condition is caused by the breakdown and eventual loss of cartilage, the rubbery substance that serves as a cushion between the bones of the joints.

Chondroitin Sulfate Uses & Scientific Evidence For
Chondroitin Sulfate is necessary in the production of cartilage. Chondroitin produces Proteoglycans, a vital component of cartilage tissue. Chondroitin attracts water to the proteoglycans and holds it there, which is important to maintaining healthy joints. It also protects existing cartilage from premature degeneration by blocking certain enzymes that destroy cartilage and prevent nutrients from reaching the cartilage. Chondroitin also stimulated the production of proteoglycans, glycosaminoglycans and collagen; these are complex molecules that are the building blocks of new cartilage. Chondroitin supplement is used in the treatment of osteoarthritis. Chondroitin is useful in the following areas:
- Osteoarthritis – There have been many clinical trials for the use of oral Chondroitin. Most of these studies have reported significant benefits for pain and mobility. Also has been found that a reduced need for anti-inflammatories.
- Ophthalmologic Uses - Chondroitin is sometimes used as a component of eye solutions used for Keratoconjunctivitis, Corneal preservation and Intraocular pressure. These solutions should only be used under the supervision of an Ophthalmologist.
- Coronary artery disease – Using Chondroitin as a secondary prevention has shown the prevention of subsequent coronary events in patients with a history of heart disease or myocardial infarction. There is much more research to be done in this area.
- Psoriasis – There have been early studies that suggest that Chondroitin may help Psoriasis.
- Cancer – There are several theories as to why Chondroitin might be useful in treating cancer. One of them is that it may slow down or stop the formation of blood vessels that supply the cancer with oxygen and nutrients. Another is that Chondroitin blocks the formation of certain enzymes that tumors produce to invade surrounding tissue.
