Chaste Tree Berry General Information
Chaste Tree is a large shrub that can grow up to 22 feet tall. It has blue-violet flowers and is native to the Mediterranean and southern European areas as far west as Western Asia, but is usually collected in Morocco and Albania. This tree flourishes on riverbanks, but is also used as an ornamental plant in American gardens. Ancient Greeks and Romans used this plant to secure chastity;
leaves of the plant were strewn on couches during rituals associated with Demeter, the goddess of agriculture. The ancient Greeks also believed it could ward off evil. Medieval monks were said to have eaten the berries to reduce sexual desire, hence the name Chaste Tree or Monks Pepper. Ancient Europeans used the berries to treat hemorrhage following childbirth and menstrual regulation. It was also used for injuries and inflammation and to encourage milk flow after birth.

Chaste Tree Berry Uses & Scientific Evidence For
The fresh ripe berries, when pounded to a pulp, have been used in the form of a tincture for the relief of paralysis, pains in the limbs, weakness, and breast pain, in addition to the menstrual regulation and treatment of hemorrhage. Clinical trials have shown that prolonged use of Chaste Tree Berries significantly reduces a range of PMS symptoms, from irritability and headaches to cramping and breast pain. The herb can lengthen the proliferative (first) phase of the menstrual cycle and also relieve water weight, headache and fatigue. Other trials have shown genuine effectiveness for women suffering from infertility and irregular periods. Chaste Tree Berry works well in reducing the symptoms such as hot flashes associated with peri-or post menopause. Some studies have shown the berries to be antiandrogenic and can therefore be used to help treat acne in men and women and reduce an overactive libido. Current research supports the ancient medicinal uses as the Vitex (Chaste Berry) causes the pituitary gland to produce a luteinizing hormone, which re-establishes the normal balance between estrogen and progesterone, thereby regulating a women‘s cycle

Chaste Tree Berry Research and Studies
The American Pharmaceutical Association in 2000 found this about Vitex. Human studies have shown that extracts of the Chaste Tree bind to dopamine receptors in the anterior pituitary and decrease both the basal and thyrotropin-releasing hormone stimulated by the secretion of prolactin. PMS sufferers have significantly higher rates of prolactin (stimulates and maintains the breast milk) throughout their cycles, especially in the second and third weeks. Vitex has been established to correct hyperprolactinemia (too much prolactin in the blood), thus allowing normal corpus luteum (having to do with the Woman’s ovulation) development and preventing PMS.
The Journal of Midwifery Womens Health in 2006 reported this: The German Commission E approved Chaste Berry for the treatment of PMS and Mastalgia. Some women with PMS and breast pain have elevated prolactin levels. Chaste Berry inhibits prolactin release through dopamine (D-2) receptor stimulation. In a placebo trial (some take the real thing others take a fake thing) of 180 women, at three months of using Vitex, all symptoms; irritability, mood alteration, anger, headache and breast fullness were significantly improved compared to the placebo. The only thing that did not help much was the bloating.
Phytomedicine in May 2003 reported the extracts of the fruits of the Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus castus = AC) are widely used to treat premenstrual symptoms. Double-blind placebo-controlled studies indicate that one of the most common premenstrual symptoms, i.e. premenstrual mastodynia (Mastalgia) is beneficially influenced by an AC extract. In addition, numerous less rigidly controlled studies indicate that AC extracts also have beneficial effects on other psychic and somatic symptoms of the PMS.

Chaste Tree Berry Dosage Information
Chaste Tree Berry comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. The recommended dose is 1 capsule per day. For using a tincture, take 40 drops of the extract in the morning in a glass of water. With Chaste Tree Berry, no matter which formulation you use, it can take a awhile before the effects are noticeable, but usually a change is noticed by the third or fourth menstrual cycle after you begin taking it. For other formulations, read product label directions.
