General Canker Sores Information
Canker sores are painful ulcers that appear on the tongue, lips, gums or inside the cheeks. Roughly half of all Americans suffer from canker sores; the majority of these sufferers are adolescents and women, who often develop canker sores just before menstruation. Canker sores
are not the same as cold sores. Cold sores are the result of an infection; canker sores are simply inflamed tissue. Canker sores vary in size from as tiny as a pinhead to as large as a quarter. Sores appear suddenly and heal themselves in four to 20 days.

Possible Causes of Canker Sores
It is not known what causes canker sores, but they are tied to poor dental hygiene, stress, trauma (such as biting the cheek or nicking the gums with a toothbrush), poor diet, post-dental work
irritation, food allergies and fatigue. Canker sores can also result from abnormal immune response
to normal bacteria in the mouth and are also associated with Crohn’s disease. Canker sores are
not considered a serious medical condition, their appearance can be a symptom of an underlying
immunologic disease, such as HIV infection.

Possible Symptoms of Canker Sores
Canker sores look like small, crater-like sores that appear inside of the mouth. The sores are
grayish or white in color with a red border. Some people experience tingling or burning at the site
of a canker sore 6 to 12 hours before it appears. Canker sores can be very painful, and they often
interfere with eating, talking and sleeping. The sores usually last from 5 to 10 days.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Canker Sores
Canker sores can be prevented by brushing the teeth with disinfecting baking soda; eating live culture yogurt daily; avoiding spicy, salty and acidic foods; and taking a multivitamin every day. Avoid chewing gum, lozenges, mouthwashes, tobacco, coffee and citrus fruits, which trigger canker sores. Learn to effectively manage stress. People who suffer from canker sores can relieve the pain with over-the-counter pain relieving ointments and gels. If canker sores are the result of a food allergy, it is important to avoid the food triggers, especially when canker sores are present.
