Calcium General Information
Calcium is found in animals, plants, humans and the earth. The Calcium that is used in the earth is a silvery, moderately hard metallic element. This element constitutes approximately 3% of the earth’s crust and is the basic component of most animals and plants. Calcium is very widespread and is found in every major land area of the world. Calcium is a fixed component of all plants because it is essential for their growth. The Latin for Calcium is calcis, which means lime. This was known as early as the first century when the Ancient Romans prepared lime as Calcium oxide. It was not actually isolated until 1808 in England by Sir Humphry Davy.
Dairy products such as milk and cheese are a well-known source of Calcium. The problem is some individuals are allergic to dairy products and even more people are lactose intolerant leaving them unable to consume dairy products. The good news is that there are many other good sources of calcium such as: seaweeds like kelp, wakame and hijiki; nuts and seeds like almonds and sesame, beans, amaranth, collard greens, okra, rutabaga, broccoli, kale and fortified products such as orange juice and soy milk.

Calcium Uses & Scientific Evidence For
Calcium is essential for the proper development of bones and teeth, and is involved in numerous enzymatic reactions that produce energy. It is necessary for healthy muscle functions such as muscle contraction and relaxation. Calcium also regulates heart rhythm and activates enzyme systems that induce blood clotting, and it has the ability to promote healing. It is one of the most essential major biochemical elements needed in human nutrition. Every organ in the body needs Calcium. It is stored in the blood and teeth, as well as in the nerves, muscles and tissues. Calcium promotes tone, power, strength, longevity, vitality, endurance, rapid wound healing, and helps regulate metabolism. It is easy for our bodies to become Calcium deficient because it is used in almost every function. When the diet is inadequate, Calcium is one of the first elements to go out of balance. Calcium raises the body’s resistance to viruses, parasites, bacteria, and cancer.
Calcium is beneficial to everyone, but research has shown that women may benefit more than others. Pregnant women who do not get enough in their diet can increase the bone mineral content of their fetus. PMS (premenstrual syndrome) is another condition that may be alleviated by the use of calcium supplements. Research has shown that women who took 1,200 mg per day reduced their symptoms by more than 50%. A 1999 study showed that women who take Calcium as a daily supplement reduce their risk of a stroke. Calcium is frequently prescribed with Estrogen at the beginning of menopause to treat or prevent osteoporosis.
Coral Calcium, which may be extracted below sea level or from above ground deposits, contains Calcium and around 70 other trace minerals – in a state that is considered to be very absorbable and usable by the human body. The additional trace minerals support the utilization of Calcium in the body. Coral Calcium will give your body the proper calcium and trace mineral nutrients to assist your body in healing itself – especially where calcium is important or lacking, and where PH levels are too acidic. In addition, Coral Calcium will assist in raising the body’s PH level to a more alkaline state – thus increasing cell oxygen levels, which in turn improves body metabolism, expelling waste, increasing energy, etc.

Calcium Dosage Information
A standard dosage of Calcium for 0 - 1 year of age is between 210 and 270 mg daily. For 1 - 3, 500 mg daily, ages 4 - 8, 800 mg daily, ages 9 -18, 1300 mg daily, ages 19 - 50, 1000 mg daily, and 51 and older, 1200 mg daily. Magnesium and Vitamin D increase Calcium absorption while sodium helps keep Calcium in soluble form in the body (it must be water soluble to be useable). If you are pregnant or breast feeding it is best to consult your physician for the dosage your body requires.
