Calcium is one of the most well researched and best known minerals. Building strong bones, teeth and regulating muscle
contractions are its main functions. The popularity calcium maintains validates its holding in the top sellers list. Calcium is
critical to life and continuously circulates in the blood. Without adequate calcium in the blood, the body will pull from its
calcium stores (bones) and thereby cause the bones to eventually weaken. Food sources include:
• Dairy • Almonds
• Kale • Tofu
• Broccoli • Fortified foods (orange juice, cereal, soy milk)
The average dietary intake of calcium per day for a person who does not consume dairy products is about 300 mg, far
short of the approximately 1,000 mg that is recommended. The most popular form of calcium is carbonate, but is it the
best source? The debate about the optimal source of calcium continues because the answer is unknown. Studies have been
inconclusive regarding the best form because they do not take into account the factors affecting absorption. For example,
taken with or without food, time of day, separated dosages, physiological need, protein, caffeine, fat, citrus, age, activity
and individual enzymatic activity.
Is there a link between high calcium intake and kidney stones?
At one time it was thought that a high calcium intake contributed to the development of kidney stones. However, recent
studies show that a high dietary calcium intake actually decreases the risk for kidney stones. One of the main factors of
kidney stones is eating foods high in oxalic acid such as spinach, collard greens, sweet potatoes, rhubarb and beans.
Another factor is reduced fluid consumption. A high dietary calcium intake does not reduce calcium absorption. What may
nutritionally help prevent kidney stones is to take one of our calcium supplements with magnesium. Magnesium helps keep
the calcium flowing in solution inside the kidneys, therefore does not form deposits.
Was there a recent change to the tablet size of the Chelated Magnesium Tabs (#682)?
There was a change recently. The tablets used to look scuffed and appear gray and now we added a natural colorant and
increased the cellulose so the tablets are larger with no scuffed or grey appearance.
