General Bronchitis Information
Bronchitis is an inflammation or obstruction in the bronchial tubes leading to the lungs. Acute bronchitis is characterized by coughing, mucus build-up, breathing problems, fever, back pain, chest pain and sore throat. The condition usually comes on suddenly and lasts from two to three weeks. Chronic bronchitis is a form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a group of lung diseases that make it difficult for a person to breathe. Older adults are most susceptible to acute bronchitis, but it can affect younger people as well.

Possible Causes of Bronchitis
Acute bronchitis is usually occurs following an upper respiratory tract infection, like a cold or the flu. Most cases of acute bronchitis come on quickly and last from two to three weeks. Bronchitis can lead to pneumonia in people with chronic respiratory disease or other health problem.

Chronic bronchitis occurs when the bronchial tubes are frequently irritated by exposure to cigarette smoke, air pollution or noxious fumes. Chronic bronchitis can also be caused by allergies. Chronic bronchitis often results in diminished lung capacity making the heart work harder in an effort to compensate. This can lead to serious heart problems, including heart failure.

Possible Symptoms and Complications of Bronchitis
Symptoms of bronchitis include coughing, wheezing, breathlessness, mucus, fever, back pain, chest pain, sore throat and fatigue. Symptoms usually begin three to four days following an upper respiratory infection.


Bronchitis can develop into pneumonia if not treated and can also result in heart failure and emphysema.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Bronchitis
Acute bronchitis cannot be prevented, but people can take avoid developing respiratory infections by avoiding cigarette smoke and air pollution; wearing a face mask when working around airborne irritants; and avoiding contact with people with upper respiratory tract infections. People who suffer from acute bronchitis should drink plenty of fluids; avoid caffeine and alcohol; get plenty of rest; and use a humidifier to moisten air, especially when sleeping.
