General Brain Health Information
The brain is the central command center for the entire body. The brain is responsible for our hearing, feelings, sight, movement, thought and many other aspects of human
consciousness. The brain is a constantly changing organ that evolves through a person’s lifetime. When a baby is born, its brain is equipped with 100 billion nerve cells. As the baby has new experiences, these nerves connect to create networks that will transmit information involved with thinking, feeling, sensing and learning. As the
child grows, his brain becomes ripe for learning. In adolescence, the brain’s frontal lobe surges with development. Adulthood is a time of continued growth and learning in response to outside stimuli. Old age sees a natural decline in the number of neurons in some areas of the brain, but this does not mean that cognitive decline is inevitable. Many older people continue to lead creative, productive lives to the end.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Brain Health
There are many ways to enhance brain health and help the brain work to its maximum potential. Parents can help their babies get off to the best possible start by providing warm, responsive care and talking to the baby often. Creating a warm, secure home filled with loving touch, age-appropriate play and a healthy diet helps the brain make the connections necessary for learning. Singing and reading to the baby also helps brain function and establishes a framework for learning.
Parents with young children can increase brain health by providing a warm, loving, consistent home life. Challenge the child with new experiences, but let him decide what activities he is interested in pursuing. Offer a healthy diet, visit the pediatrician regularly and always use seatbelts and bike helmets.
Adolescents need plenty of sleep for the brain to function at its best. At least eight hours a night minimum is recommended. Protect the brain from injury by always
wearing a helmet when biking, skateboarding, skiing and playing contact sports. Eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of water. Avoid drugs and alcohol and get regular,
moderate exercise.
Adults can get the most of their brain power by learning new things while maintaining interest in favorite activities. Eat a healthy diet, drink at least eight glasses of water daily, exercise daily and get plenty of sleep. Keep the brain active by socializing with old friends and making new ones.
The aging brain benefits from regular, vigorous use. Volunteering, getting involved in new activities, doing crossword puzzles and keeping a journal all help to keep the mind sharp. Physical exercise and regular social contact is also beneficial.
