General Boils Information
Boils, known as furuncles by the medical field, are circular, pus-filled bumps on the skin caused by a Staphylococcus aureus bacteria infection. The infection begins deep in the root of the hair follicle and works its way to the skin surface. Boils are very common, especially in children and adolescents. Boils, which appear suddenly as tender, red, painful pustules, tend to appear most frequently on the scalp, face, underarms and buttocks. Without treatment, a boil opens, drains and heals in 10 to 25 days. With treatment, the life of the boil and its symptoms are reduced.

Possible Causes of Boils
Boils are caused by the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and are very contagious. The pus that escapes from a boil can spread to nearby skin, causing more boils to form. Pus can also enter the blood stream, spreading the infection to other parts of the body. Boils can also be caused by stress, illness, decreased immunity, toxicity, allergy and thyroid imbalance.

Possible Symptoms and Complications of Boils
Signs that a boil may be forming include mild pain, itching and swelling. Within 24 hours, the boil appears as a red, pus-filled bump that is painful to the touch. Fever may accompany the boil formation. Boils can also be symptoms of other conditions, such as an underlying infection.


Complications of boils include spread of infection to other parts of the body, formation of abscesses, general internal infection and permanent scarring.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Boils
Apply moist heat several times a day to bring the boil to a head. Keep the area clean by washing the skin several times daily. Do not cover a boil with a bandage. Do not exercise or engage in strenuous activity until the boil heals. If a boil is very large or if one reappears after healing, see a physician. Observe the child carefully; if he runs a fever, is overly tired, appears pale or just doesn’t seem “right”, call a physician.
