Blue Cohosh General Information
Blue Cohosh is a perennial herb that is purple when young, and bluish green with yellow flowers and dark fruit when mature. The root of the plant, harvested in the fall is the part that is used medicinally and has a bittersweet flavor. The wild plant is so bitter that grazing animals will not even eat it. It is one of the oldest indigenous American plant drugs and was primarily used by Native American women a few weeks before childbirth to make the birth process swift and easy. They also used it to ease menstrual cramps and for treating inflammation of the uterus. The root was used for treating rheumatism, colic, bronchitis, dropsy, sore throat, hiccoughs, epilepsy, and hysterics. Blue Cohosh has antispasmodic, emmenagogue (menstrual flow stimulant), parturifacient (induces labor), diuretic, diaphoretic and expectorant properties. The plant also acts as a relaxant and tonic to the nervous system.
