General Bloody Nose / Nosebleed / Epistaxis Information
Nosebleeds occur when there is bleeding from the internal blood vessels of the nose. Some individuals whose blood vessels are closer to the surface inside the nose are more susceptible to nosebleeds than others. Children have nosebleeds on a more regular basis than adults because they are more likely to stick fingers and other objects into their noses. Children also have thinner mucous membranes in the lining of the nose.

There are two types of nosebleeds:
Posterior: Primarily affects older people with high blood pressure. The bleeding occurs in the back of the nose and tends to run down the back of the throat into the mouth.
Anterior: The most common type of nosebleed, in which bright red blood flows from the front of the nose and out the nostrils. This is usually related to damage to the internal membrane of the nose.

Possible Causes of Bloody Nose / Nosebleed / Epistaxis
Nosebleeds are most commonly related to some type of damage to the internal nose tissue. Causes may include excessive or hard blowing of the nose; inserting a foreign object, including fingers, into the nose; changes in air pressure, altitude or weather; and excessive heat and dryness.

When nosebleeds occur frequently, they may be a sign of an illness or medical condition, including arteriosclerosis / atherosclerosis , high blood pressure / hypertension, malaria, scarlet fever, sinusitis, typhoid fever, hemophilia, leukemia, thrombocytopenia, aplastic anemia, liver disease, the use of drugs that may thin the blood, high estrogen levels and vitamin deficiency.

The main symptom of a nosebleed is the flow of blood from the nostrils.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Bloody Nose / Nosebleed / Epistaxis
Use a humidifier in dry winter months or year-round when living in a dry climate. Use a saline spray in the nose several times a day to keep the nasal tissues from becoming dry. Do not tilt the head backward during a bloody nose. This causes the blood to run down the back of the throat, which could result in choking. Instead, hold a tissue over the nostrils with the head upright until the bleeding stops.
