Blackberry General Information
The Blackberry is a berry that grows on small bushy vines; each berry is in a cluster of small black fruits. In Britain the same plant is usually called Bramble because of its prickly thorns, or Brambles. The plant is also known as Cloudberry in Northern Europe and known as Dewberry in the American South. Since ancient times, Greek physicians prescribed Blackberry for gout, and since the time of Christ, Blackberry leaves were chewed to treat bleeding gums. The ancient Chinese used the unripe berries to treat kidney problems, urinary incontinence and impotence. The Romans chewed the leaves for bleeding gums and drank a decoction for diarrhea. During the Middle Ages the Blackberry leaves were applied to the skin to soothe burns and scalds. Traditionally though, the most common uses were for treating diarrhea, sore throats, and wounds.
The flowers and fruit of the Blackberry have long been with Magical Powers. Blackberry was believed to protect from “evil runes” and was used to cure snakebites. Merely sitting under a Blackberry bush was considered sufficient to cure rheumatism and boils. In parts of England children with hernias were pushed under the arches the vines made for a magical cure. Superstition in the UK holds that Blackberries should not be picked after the 15th of September as the Devil has claimed them. The Devil has left a mark on the leaves.
