General Bitot's Spots Information
Bitot's spots are superficial, irregularly-shaped, foamy gray or white patches that appear on the conjunctiva, the membrane that covers most of the eyeball. Bitot's spots
are one of the oldest recorded medical conditions. The ancient Egyptians treated this condition with animal liver more than 3500 years ago. Composed of accumulation of
keratinized epithelial debris and secretions, bitot’s spots develop into a condition called xerophthalmia if not treated. Bitot's spots are usually accompanied by night blindness. Eye ulcers develop and the cornea turns to mush (melts) if bitot's spots are not treated. This can result
in irreversible blindness.

Possible Causes of Bitot's Spots
Bitot's spots are most likely due to severe vitamin A deficiency. Bitot's spots are also known to occur in people with fat and vitamin malabsorption. Total blindness caused by tissue death due to a severe vitamin A deficiency cannot be treated.

Beneficial Dietary Supplements
Vitamin A, when taken in large doses (10,000 to 25,000 IU), can effectively treat bitot's spots.
Beta-carotene is a form of pre-vitamin A, which is readily converted to vitamin A in the body.
Retinal is used in the body for regulating the development of various tissues, such as the cells of the skin, eyes and the lining of the lungs and intestines.
Zinc deficiency may reduce the activity of retinol dehydrogenase, an enzyme needed to help vitamin A work in the eye.
Magnesium has been found to improve vision in people with vision problems. Take 250-400 mg. daily.
Digestive Enzymes enhance absorption of needed minerals, such as vitamin A, zinc and copper for retinal health.
Taurine reduces the oxidative damage caused by sunlight to the eyes and stimulates the body's ability to clean up waste by-products that accumulate in the
retina.
Multi-mineral Supplement replenishes mineral balance.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin are carotenoid supplements that act as a filter to protect the eye from potentially damaging forms of light.
Bilberry enhances night vision and may also slow the progression of eye problems.
