| Bed Wetting Information / Enuresis

General Bed wetting / Enuresis Information
Bed wetting, also known as enuresis, is the involuntary act of urinating in bed, especially at night while sleeping. Bed-wetting occurs commonly in childhood and in old age, but also can happen in early-adulthood. Bed-wetting can be a very difficult and embarrassing problem for children.
Sleepovers, summer camp, even an overnight visit to a grandparent’s house can be distressing for the child. Parents also suffer because bed-wetting can seriously affect a child’s self-esteem and social confidence. Because bed-wetting is unintentional, it should not be considered a naughty behavior. No disciplinary measures should be taken when bed-wetting is a problem.

Possible Causes of Bedwetting / Enuresis
Two physical functions prevent bedwetting. The first is a hormone that reduces urine production at night. The second is the ability to wake up when the bladder is full. Children usually achieve nighttime dryness by developing one or both of these abilities. There appear to be some hereditary factors in how and when these develop.
The first ability is a hormone cycle that reduces the body's urine production. At about sunset each day, the body releases a minute burst of antidiuretic hormone (also known as arginine vasopressin or AVP). This hormone burst reduces the kidney's urine output well into the night so the bladder doesn't get full until morning. This hormone cycle is not present at birth. Many children develop it between the ages of two and six years old, others between six and the end of puberty, and some not at all.
The second ability that helps people stay dry is waking when the bladder is full. This ability develops in the same age range as the vasopressin hormone, but is separate from that hormone cycle.
Most children develop the ability to stay dry as they grow older. The typical development process begins with one- and two-year-old children developing larger bladders and beginning to sense bladder fullness. Two- and three-year-old children begin to stay dry during the day. Four- and five-year-olds develop an adult pattern of urinary control and begin to stay dry at night.
Bed-wetting can also be caused by emotional stresses (moving to a new house, parental separation or a new baby sibling), sleeping too soundly, drinking too much before bed, urinary tract infections, obstructions in the urinary tract, spinal disorders, food allergies and diabetes.

Possible Symptoms and Complications of Bedwetting / Enuresis
If a child has never gone more than three months without wetting the bed, normal growth will usually solve the problem. Should a child complain of painful urination, cry when urinating or drink excessive amounts of water, bed-wetting may be a symptom of an underlying medical problem.
Complications of bed wetting can occur if a physical cause for the condition is overlooked. Psychosocial complications can occur if the problem isn't addressed quickly.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Bed wetting / Enuresis
Consume foods high in vitamin B2 and B5, including bee pollen, brewer’s yeast, soaked nuts and spirulina. Do not drink liquids within 30 minutes of bedtime. Since bed-wetting is often caused by food allergies, see a physician for food allergy testing to rule this out as a cause. Any child who suffers from bed-wetting should be treated with sympathy and understanding. Spanking and scolding a child for wetting the bed only compounds the problem.
