Ancient Chinese and Indian literature wrote of Shilajit as Amrit, or “nectar of evergreen life” and “fountain of youth.” Shilajit is decomposed plant matter from centuries ago. It oozes from rocks in the Himalayan region during hot weather. Shilajit contains fulvic acid which help carry herbal compounds deep into the tissues of the body. Today Shilajit is still used as a powerful tonic to increase energy, strength, and sexual energy, but it is also used to treat diabetes, urinary tract and kidney infections, gallstone, jaundice, enlarged spleen, dyspepsia, worms, digestion, hysteria, insanity, nerve diseases, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia, tuberculosis, leprosy, eczema, elephantiasis, anorexia, bronchitis, asthma, and fractures of the bones.

There are no known safety issues associated with using Shilajit; however, those with a high uric acid count, or those with febrile diseases should refrain from using this supplement. Safety in young children and pregnant or nursing women is not known.
