West Nile Virus Spreads

Worldwide mosquitoes transmit various diseases to more than 700 000 000. people annually and will be responsible for the deaths of 1 of every 17 people currently alive! "CDC August 2002"

During the summer of 1999, several mysterious deaths due to encephalitis in the New York area, prompted officials at the CDC to investigate. Many dead birds (crows and blue jays) had also been reported in the same area just before the human deaths. Soon West Nile Virus was confirmed to be the cause of death in the birds and humans.

West Nile Virus causes encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). It is carried by birds which have been infected through mosquito bites. The virus is located in the mosquito's salivary glands. During blood feeding, the virus may be injected into the animal or human, where it may multiply causing illness and death. Once an infected bird migrates, then is bitten by mosquitoes in the new area, these newly infected mosquitoes can then transmit the disease to humans and other animals. West Nile virus, had been found in humans, birds and other vertebrates in Africa, Eastern Europe, West Asia, and the Middle East, but until 1999 had not been documented in the Western Hemisphere.

It is not known from where the U.S. virus originated, but it is genetically, most closely related to strains found in the Middle East. Some believe it was brought here by migrating birds, or maybe even the diabolical intentional release of infected birds! However it got here, West Nile Virus appears to be firmly established in the United States, and researchers expect its continued spread like wild fire throughout the states.

As of August 5, 2002, state health departments have released information on 90 cases of West Nile virus related human illness this year, including 4 deaths. From 1999 through 2001, there were 149 cases of West Nile virus human illness in the United States reported to CDC and confirmed, including 18 deaths.

August 2002, West Nile virus has been documented in Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

In 2001, West Nile virus was detected in 27 mosquito species in the states. To date it is being detected in over 91 new species. Which means it is spreading quickly to other species of mosquitoes. Most of these species feed at night, however several additional species of infected mosquitoes recently found are day feeders. In the colder zones of the United States, West Nile encephalitis cases occur primarily in the late summer or early fall. In the southern climates where temperatures are milder, West Nile virus can be transmitted year round.

Crow samples are especially important because crows appear to be highly sensitive to the virus. Dead crows can therefore act as sentinels for local transmission of the disease since they normally travel less than 200 miles. Infected crows can also help state and local health departments determine the risk to humans.

Ticks and even fleas may soon be involved in the transmission of West Nile Virus!

Infected mosquitoes are the primary source for West Nile virus. Although ticks infected with West Nile virus have been found in Asia and Africa, their role in the transmission and maintenance of the virus is uncertain. West Nile virus has been shown to infect horses, cats, bats, chipmunks, skunks, squirrels, and domestic rabbits.

I came across the following and found it interesting.

Can mosquitoes transmit AIDS? Mosquitoes cannot transmit HIV because the virus neither survives nor replicates in mosquitoes and the blood from the last bitten person is not flushed into the next person during subsequent feeds. In addition, the circulating viral load of most HIV-infected persons is so low that the theoretical risk that a mosquito bite would transmit HIV is estimated to be less than 1 in 10, 000, 000. (American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine)

The obvious question here is, If HIV cannot possibly be transmitted by mosquitoes, WHY is there a chance in 10, 000, 000. of it happening to even one person????

Symptoms of West Nile encephalitis

Most infections are mild, and symptoms include fever, headache, and body aches, occasionally with skin rash and swollen lymph glands. More severe infection may be marked by headache, high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, paralysis, coma and death.

There is no specific therapy. In more severe cases, intensive supportive therapy is indicated, often involving hospitalization, intravenous fluids, airway management, respiratory support (ventilator), prevention of secondary infections (pneumonia, urinary tract, etc.), and good nursing care. There is currently no vaccine against West Nile encephalitis.

Clear the areas around your home of ALL standing water. To develop, mosquitoes require an environment of standing water. They have adapted to complete their life cycle in diverse aquatic habitats, including fresh water, salt water marshes, brackish water, or water found in containers, old tires, flower pots or tree holes. The eggs of most species hatch in 2 to 3 days, and the larvae feed on organic matter in the water for about a week until they change into pupae. The pupae live at the surface of the water for 2 to 3 days before metamorphosing into adult mosquitoes.

If you have outdoor activities planed, spray the area with Pyrethrum. Pyrethrum is a powerful, rapidly acting insecticide, derived from the crushed and dried flowers of the daisy Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium. The Chemical industry will tell you Pyrethrum is toxic to human and to use Permethrin which is a human-made synthetic pyrethroid they say has low toxicity in mammals. But it cannot be used in certified organic gardens! Where as Pyrethrum can and the professional organic gardeners will tell you Pyrethrum is non-toxic to most mammals, making it among the safest insecticides in use. It is quickly inactivated by sunlight and air leaving no residue to harm the environment. The Environmental Protection Agency has approved it for more uses than any other insecticide. It's sold under trade names that include Pyrenon, Red Arrow (pyrethrins/rotenone) and Pyrellin (Pyrethrins/rotenone).

Deet is Poison! The CDC and the FDA continue to claim that DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) is the most effective repellent. Only formulas which contain 35% DEET are effective. DEET is a neurotoxin. It causes Encephalitis as effectively as West Nile virus!

DEET toxicity reports exist in medical literature. Many cases of encephalopathy, in children younger than 8 years of age have been reported. Though it is said that many of these persons had a history of long-term, excessive, or inappropriate use of DEET repellents. Can there be an appropriate use of POISON in children? Spaying this stuff on a child is the same as pouring it in their mouths! Studies show that a child, especially a young child, instinctively places their hand in their mouth approximately every 2 minutes! As for adults, 14 cases of contact urticaria and irritant contact dermatitis (mostly in soldiers) were reported in one year. How many were not reported we will never know.

A NEW and EXCITING DISCOVERY!

Catnip Repels Mosquitoes More Effectively Than DEET

CHICAGO, August 27, 2001 — Researchers report that nepetalactone, the essential oil in catnip that gives the plant its characteristic odor, is about ten times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than DEET — the compound used in most commercial insect repellents.

The finding was reported today at the 222nd national meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society, by the same Iowa State University research group that two years ago discovered that catnip also repels cockroaches.

Entomologist Chris Peterson, Ph.D., with Joel Coats, Ph.D., chair of the university's entomology department, led the effort to test catnip's ability to repel mosquitoes. Peterson, a former post-doctoral research associate at the school, is now with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, Wood Products Insects Research Unit, in Starkville, Miss.

While they used so-called yellow fever mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti) — one of several species of mosquitoes found in the United States — Peterson says catnip should work against all types of mosquitoes.

Peterson put groups of 20 mosquitoes in a two-foot glass tube, half of which was treated with nepetalactone. After 10 minutes, only an average of 20 percent — about four mosquitoes — remained on the side of the tube treated with a high dose (1.0 percent) of the oil. In the low-dose test (0.1 percent) with nepetalactone, an average of 25 percent — five mosquitoes — stayed on the treated side. The same tests with DEET (diethyl-m-toluamide) resulted in approximately 40 percent to 45 percent — eight-nine mosquitoes — remaining on the treated side.

In the laboratory, repellency is measured on a scale ranging from +100 percent, considered highly repellent, to –100 percent, considered a strong attractant. A compound with a +100 percent repellency rating would repel all mosquitoes, while –100 percent would attract them all. A rating of zero means half of the insects would stay on the treated side and half on the untreated side. In Peterson's tests, catnip ranged from +49 percent to +59 percent at high doses, and +39 percent to +53 percent at low doses. By comparison, at the same doses, DEET's repellency was only about +10 percent in this bioassay, he notes.

Peterson says nepetalactone is about 10 times more effective than DEET because it takes about one-tenth as much nepetalactone as DEET to have the same effect. Most commercial insect repellents contain about 5 percent to 25 percent DEET. Presumably, much less catnip oil would be needed in a formulation to have the same level of repellency as a DEET-based repellent.

Catnip is a perennial herb belonging to the mint family and grows wild in most parts of the United States, although it also is cultivated for commercial use. Catnip is native to Europe and was introduced to this country in the late 18th century. It is primarily known for the stimulating effect it has on cats, although some people use the leaves in tea, as a meat tenderizer and even as a folk treatment for fevers, colds, cramps and migraines.

The Hidden Disease You May Already Have

Packing on the pounds? Having difficulty losing weight? Cholesterol going up? Blood pressure on the rise? Feeling fuzzy? You may be at risk for Syndrome X...

You may already be suffering from one of the most common-and often overlooked-diseases to strike Americans.

It's not a deadly new virus. Nor cancer.

It's a disease, surprisingly enough, caused by your body's inability to make the most of the food you eat. And as many as one in three people suffer from it.

Doctors call this peculiar condition insulin resistance or, with a bit more mystique, Syndrome X.

If the name doesn't ring a bell, the symptoms might: Feeling tired after you eat, and at other times when you shouldn't. Gaining a pound here and a pound there - and having difficulty losing them. Seeing your blood pressure creep up year after year. And finding that your cholesterol does the same.

Insulin resistance is the chief characteristic of adult-onset diabetes, which affects an estimated 15 million Americans. It also sets the stage for obesity and coronary heart disease-even if you're not diabetic.

What can you do about it? The simple prescription is to eat right, take your vitamins and minerals, and exercise, because each reduces insulin resistance.

But as you might imagine, there's more to the story.

Sugar and Insulin: A Double Whammy
Doctors have known about insulin resistance for decades, but only in the past 10 years have they gained a clearer idea of exactly how it derails your health.

Insulin resistance is caused in large part by the over-consumption of refined carbohydrates, such as breads, pastas, and sugary foods. Eating too much saturated fat (found in beef) and omega-6 fatty acids (found in vegetable oils) and trans-fatty acids (found in margarine and foods with partially hydrogenated oils) also seems to increase the risk of insulin resistance.

Normally, after you eat a meal, your body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose, or blood sugar. The presence of glucose prompts the release of insulin, a hormone produced in your pancreas. Insulin helps transport glucose from the blood to cells, where's it's burned for energy or stored.

When a person eats a lot of refined carbohydrates year after year, a dangerous cascade occurs. Insulin levels remain chronically high, and cells become less responsive-and resistant-to insulin. As a consequence, relatively little glucose gets burned and levels remain high. With chronically elevated glucose levels, insulin resistance evolves into diabetes.

At an American Diabetes Association (ADA) scientific symposium on antioxidants and diabetes, held last November in Orlando, Fla., numerous researchers implicated elevated glucose as a major source of dangerous free radicals. Glucose, a highly energetic compound (and the primary source of energy in the body), spontaneously oxidizes itself and spins off large numbers of free radicals, according to Lester Packer, Ph.D., a cell and molecular biologist at the University of California.

Free radicals, molecules with an unpaired electron, react with normal molecules in the body and oxidize them, much the way heat or oxygen turns butter rancid. When glucose is steadily higher than normal-well above 120 mg/dL-it auto-oxidizes even more readily and spins off still more free radicals. Some of these free radicals, according to Alan Chait, M.D., a professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, oxidize cholesterol and set the stage for coronary heart disease.

High levels of glucose cause other problems as well. At the ADA meeting, Richard Bucala, M.D., Ph.D., of the Picower Institute for Medical Research, Manhasset, N.Y., explained that glucose can bind to proteins and "crosslink" them. The process, called glycosylation, is akin to tying your body's proteins, which include your genes, into knots. Like free radicals, protein glycosylation has also been linked to aging and disease.

High levels of insulin create still more free radicals, leading to what researchers describe as "oxidative stress." Ele Ferrannini, M.D., of Italy's National Research Council, Pisa, has reported that high insulin levels increases the demand for vitamin E, which quenches free radicals. That's not all. Dean Ornish, M.D., of Sausalito, Calif., recently wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association that insulin helps convert calories into triglycerides and cholesterol, increasing the risk of coronary heart disease.

Insulin Resistance and Heart Disease
Until 1988, researchers studying insulin resistance focused on its role in diabetes. Then, Gerald M. Reaven, M.D., of the Stanford University Medical Center, built a strong case for insulin resistance as a cause of obesity, hypertension, and coronary heart disease.

"The fact that an insulin-resistant subject may not become diabetic does not mean that they suffer no untoward consequences," Reaven wrote in the journal Diabetes. "Indeed, an argument can be made that the more insulin sensitive [in contrast to insulin resistant] an individual, the better off he or she is, and that the attempt to compensate for insulin resistance sets in motion of series of events that play an important role in the development of both hypertension and coronary heart disease.

Reaven coined the term "Syndrome X," to describe how insulin resistance sets the stage for more serious disease. The syndrome is characterized by six traits: insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, abnormally high insulin levels, high triglycerides, low high-density lipoprotein (the "good" cholesterol), and hypertension. "The common feature of the proposed syndrome is insulin resistance," he explained, "and all other changes are likely to be secondary to this basic abnormality.".

Alpha-Lipoic Acid Help
Some of the best ideas for preventing and reversing insulin resistance come from emerging treatments for adult-onset diabetes, the condition in which insulin resistance is most severe. One approach aims at reducing glucose levels (and consequently insulin levels) and the other uses vitamins to counteract free radicals generated by glucose.

A number of micronutrients help insulin efficiently move glucose into cells for burning. If you think of your body's cells as engines, refined carbohydrates provide plenty of high-grade fuel. But you also need spark plugs to efficiently ignite the fuel. One of the most promising of these biological spark plugs is alpha-lipoic acid.

A natural cell constituent, alpha-lipoic plays a fundamental role in converting glucose to energy. Researchers have known from animal experiments that it can lower and stabilize glucose levels and, in Germany, alpha-lipoic acid is sold as a "drug" for the treatment of diabetic polyneuropathy, a type of severe nerve pain.

At the ADA meeting, Stephan Jacob, M.D., of the University of Tuebingen, Germany, described his recent study of 74 diabetic given at least 600 mg of alpha-lipoic acid supplements daily. The alpha-lipoic acid stimulated insulin activity, which safely lowered and stabilized glucose levels. It also made the patients more insulin sensitive and increased their glucose tolerance, both positive changes.

Other nutrients also help improve insulin sensitivity and, conversely, reduce insulin resistance. The mineral vanadium, found in vanadyl sulfate supplements, also improves insulin's ability to transport glucose into cells. With insulin working efficiently, the body needs and produces less of it. According to Barbara F. Harland, Ph.D., of Howard University, Washington, D.C., vanadium has been researched for 40 years and is close to being recognized as an essential nutrient.

Chromium, which is recognized as an essential mineral, also helps lower glucose levels. It is a component of the "glucose tolerance factor," a molecule essential for normal insulin function and glucose metabolism. Last year, Richard A. Anderson, Ph.D., a researcher at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, described a joint U.S./Chinese study in which diabetics received either daily supplements of chromium picolinate or dummy pills. He said that 200 mcg of chromium picolinate daily safely lowered and stabilized blood sugar levels in diabetics in just four months. People taking 1,000 mcg of chromium daily ended up with glucose and insulin levels comparable to those of normal people.

The omega-3 fatty acids, or fish oils, also improve insulin sensitivity and reduce insulin resistance, according to a recent animal study by Margaret T. Behme, M.D., of University Hospital, London, Ontario. The omega-3 fatty acids restore a balance disrupted by excessive consumption of omega-6 fatty acids and saturated fats.

Vitamin E Prevents Damage
Researchers at the ADA meeting came close to unanimously endorsing vitamin E to relieve some of the "oxidative stress" caused by excessive glucose and free radicals in diabetics. It's likely that non-diabetics with insulin resistance also suffer from oxidative stress, though to a lesser degree.

Why the emphasis on vitamin E? Many studies have reported that 400 IU or more daily can dramatically reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, the cause of death among 80 percent of diabetics-and the leading cause of death overall in the United States. In fact, it appears that the same process that causes coronary heart disease in most people is accelerated in diabetics.

What happens is this: free radicals generated by glucose oxidize the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) form of cholesterol in the blood. White blood cells scavenge the oxidized LDL, then infiltrate heart tissue and get stuck. This causes the cholesterol deposits characteristic of heart disease.

Vitamin E can neutralizes many of these free radicals and retards the development of coronary heart disease, according to research by Ishwarlal Jialal, M.D., of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Jialal described a 14-week study in which he gave 21 healthy patients 1,200 IU of natural vitamin E daily. The vitamin significantly reduced LDL oxidation and prevented white blood cells from sticking to the heart. Jialal has seen similar reductions in oxidized LDL among diabetics. "In my own practice, I suggest to my coronary artery disease patients that they take 400 IU of vitamin E daily," he said.

Angelo Azzi, Ph.D., a professor at the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Bern, Switzerland, echoed Jialal and expressed a strong preference for natural vitamin E. "Natural vitamin E is two times more effective than the synthetic compound," he said, adding that the body prefers the structure of the natural molecule. "The important thing is to take it," he said.

As antioxidants go, alpha-lipoic acid is also extremely important, according to the University of California's Packer. In 1988, researchers discovered that it was one of the most potent and versatile antioxidants. It also helps recycle vitamin E and other antioxidants, such as vitamin C and CoQ10.

In sum, you have a one-in-three statistical risk of developing insulin resistance, but your real risk increases sharply if you consume a lot of refined carbohydrates, omega-6 fatty acids (found in fried foods and vegetable oils), and saturated fats. But you're not going to wake up one morning to discover that you're suddenly insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance takes years to become severe. If you pay attention to some of the early signs higher blood pressure and elevated triglyceride and cholesterol-when you're in your 30s or 40s, you can reverse insulin resistance and stand a good chance of preventing diabetes and coronary heart disease when you're older.

The Skin You're In

We are each provided a perfectly fitted bio-suit to protect our bodies at birth. Your skin is an organ, it is your body's first defense against infection and disease, it protects your internal organs, it regulates body temperature and it helps your body remove excess water and toxins.

Taking our skin for granted is so easy to do. Forgetting to take care of your skin everyday and waiting until something goes wrong, then frantically looking for a cure can cause further damage to already neglected skin.

The major causes of poor skin condition, premature aging and disease are:
  • Sun exposure, the sun causes 80 percent of skin damage. Stay away from tanning beds and always use a good SPF 15 or higher sunscreen, even on cloudy days ultraviolet rays can cause damage. If you get a sunburn apply aloe vera or burn gel to minimize the damage. A sunless tan is much safer for your skin.

  • Poor nutrition contributes to many skin conditions. Vibrant healthy skin begins with your diet. What you eat determines how your skin reacts to the daily onslot of elements that take their toll. Eating more leafy green vegetables, legumes (such as peas and beans), fruit, fish, olive oil, multigrain bread, and low-fat milk products promotes strong skin and less wrinkling. The more meat, sugar, fatty desserts, margarine, butter, and other whole-milk products you consume, the more damage and wrinkling you will have. A good daily multivitamin will help.

  • Smoking is proven to age your skin! Nicotine enters your pours, dries the skin and causes premature wrinkling. Second hand smoke is just as harmful. If you smoke, STOP before the damage is irreversible.

  • Contact allergies, insect bites, irritants, toxins and fungus can cause blistering, rashes and infection which leave scarring. If you know you have come into contact with an irritant quickly clean the skin with soap and water. Keep the area clean and use a topical antibiotic to prevent infection. Keep your immune system strong to speed healing and prevent allergies.

  • Stress, stress starves the skin of vital nutrients by sending those nutrients to other organs to keep them running efficiently. After a stressful day our skin is left depleted, weak and vulnerable. Relaxing and replenishing the skin is crucial.

  • Hormonal changes, sudden imbalance of hormones happens in our bodies during adolescence or can be brought on by many factors, causing dry skin, oily skin, acne and rashes.

  • Hygiene, bathing everyday is important. Your skin breathes, there is a constant exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen. Your skin excretes natural oils to keep itself soft and flexible. Air pollution, pollen, and dust gets stuck to the oil on our skin and can enter the pores clogging them. Carbon dioxide can't get out and oxygen can't get in. Also with the pores clogged, the skin can no longer release natural oil, it becomes dry, rough and wrinkled. A good hot bath or shower with a gentle soap, opens the pores and releases the toxins.
To keep our skin healthy all that's required is a little daily maintenance. A daily skin care routine is very important, studies have shown that children who are taught to wash and care for their skin at an early age develop acne far less often than those who are not. As we age our skin is exposed to more and more damaging elements and needs more than just cleansing to stay healthy.

Your face is the first thing people see. It tells others a lot about you, your age, your race, if you are male or female, and like it or not, recalling your face is how others remember you.

A good daily skin care routine for your face includes:

Wash - Exfoliate the skins surface to remove rough, dead skin cells that build up on the surface of your face causing it to look dull and lifeless. Exfoliating those cells will rejuvenate your skin, making you look more radiant. Use slow, gentle, circular motions with your fingers to distribute the cleanser. Work up from the neck, past the jawbone, to the cheekbones, around the sides of your nose and up the bridge of the nose to the forehead and out to the temples. Repeat this motion several times for at least three minutes.

Rinse - Splash cool water over your face and gently wipe downward to the neck several times until all cleanser is removed. Pat dry with a clean towel.

Maintain - You have taken care of the surface of the skin, and are ready to repair and support the structures below. Moisterizing creams and lotions are great for the treatment of fine wrinkles. Regular use of a good moisturizer will boost production of collagen and elastins, which support the surface of the skin and create a fresh, firm appearance.

Protect - Now that you have helped your skin look it's best, you need to protect it from ongoing sun damage. Reduce sun exposure with regular use of a sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15. This also lessens your chance of developing skin cancer Always apply sunscreen before make-up.

Once Weekly

Steam - Start your facial with an herbal steam. Bring a small pan of water to a boil, remove it from the heat, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil and place a towel over your head and the and the pan. Rosemary, lavender, oregano and grapefruit essential oils have ingredients that eliminate oil and bacteria. For mature or sensitive skin use gentle and soothing rose or chamomile. Steaming opens the pores, allowing deep cleansing of dirt and oil from the follicles. In addition, it softens dead skin cells, helps expel toxins, increases circulation and relaxes the face muscles.

Wash - To remove the dead skin and toxins loosed by the steam. Using a more gentle cleanser , begin at the neck, move up over the jaw and continue over the chin and cheeks using fluid strokes. Cleanse the nose and forehead areas. Be gentle with the eye area as the skin there is very delicate, especially after steaming. Rince with clean cool water, pat dry.

Tone - The astringent properties of toners tighten the skin, which helps reduce the size of your pores. Toner also prepares your skin for moisturizing. Make your own herbal toner, containing witch hazel, thyme or sage. Just add a few drops of extract to ¼ cup of water and apply with a cotton ball to your restored skin. The toner refreshes the face and restores acidity to the skin.

ALWAYS Moisturize, after any facial it is important to re-moisturize your skin with a botanically based moisturizer. Aloe vera can help soothe and moisturize skin. Panthenol, a pro-vitamin B5 derivative that speeds healing for blemishes, acts as a humectant for dry skin, helps correct signs of aging in mature skin and calms sensitive skin.
Afterward, don't forget your sunscreen to protect your soft, new skin from ultraviolet rays.

Once Monthly

Clay Masks made with natural bentonite clay pull excess oils and toxins out of the skin as it dries. It leaves the skin soft and supple. Lie back and relax during your mask treatment. You might even want to soak cotton pads in aloe juice or use silk eye pillows and cover your eyes to moisturize the eye area, this also helps relieve tension.

Helpful Supplements

An important component of most skin care programs is alpha-hydroxy acid (fruit acids) which help the skin by removing dead cells. Fruit acids and enzymes actually peel off dead layers of skin, thereby revealing the healthy skin beneath.

The presence of copper in living tissues has been known for more than 200 years. Early medicinal applications of copper typically involved treatment of painful joints and muscles using copper bracelets. Scientific studies have clearly defined a role for copper in the regulation of growth, development, and function of the human body. Studies have proven that copper is essential for collagen and elastin in the skin. And it is also important to the tissue regulation processes. Antioxidants and copper supplements protect skin from free radical damage and fight signs of aging

Sulfer heals the skin, in people with skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema, sulfur is needed in the diet and topically. MSM, Methylsulfonylmethane, is a naturally occurring nutrient found in plants, meats, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables. We've seen reports of MSM eliminating wrinkles, brown spots, skin tumors, and spider veins. MSM is being used for burn victims and repairing scar tissue. Many people report relief from allergies after using MSM.

Seaweed soaps are great for skin elasticity and collagen synthesis. During pregnancy the skin has to stretch, strong healthy skin will easily stretch, where as thin weak depleted skin will tear or separate leaving stretch marks

Niacinamide is a water-soluble vitamin, which is found in all metabolically active tissue including skin. It has been shown to help with acne as well as with skin cancer. It is being used increasingly in antiaging moisturizers, remains stable in the presence of light and oxygen, and speeds epidermal turnover. L-Lysine is one of the 8 essential amino acids. Lysine is also crucial for the formation of collagen, the fibrous protein which makes up bone, cartilage, connective tissue and supports the outer layer of skin. Hair and Skin provides nutrients necessary for healthy hair, skin and nails.

Herb of the Month Goldenseal

Hydrastis canadensis

Other Names: Yellowroot, Yellow puccoon, Eye balm, Eye root, Indian dye, Ground raspberry, Jaundice root

Habitat: Native North American perennial plant found growing from Vermont to Minnesota and southward. Rare in some places due to over harvesting. It is found mostly in shady deep woods and damp meadows, prefers humus, rich, well drained soil, shade, and can be cultivated by using seeds or transplanting seedlings. Growing to about 18 inches high, the stem and leaves are hairy and deep green. The large palmate leaves are serrate, with five to seven lobes, growing near the stem top in nearly alternate pairs. Blooming occurs from march to May, atop the stem appears a solitary, small, greenish-white flower which appears to be furry. The fruit is red and resembles a raspberry. The root is thick and knotted, bright yellow, and has long thin root hairs.

Properties: Goldenseal has a long history of use as an alternative medicine. The plants constituents confirm these uses and further studies indicate the presents of hydrastine, berberine and canadine which are showing promise in fighting cancer and other diseases. It is used internally only for short periods of time (3 months or less) as an antiseptic, antibacterial, antispasmodic, anthelmintic, laxative, and astringent.

Used as an infusion or weak tea for upset stomach and disorders of the digestive system, also makes a great mouthwash for sore gums, pyorrhea, mouth ulcers, and as gargle for sore throat. Douching with the tea can help relieve itching and vaginal infections. It is used in alternative medicine to expel intestinal worms. The powdered root may be snuffed or sniffed in the nose for infected sinuses. Use a few drops warm for ear ache and eye wash for sore eyes and sties. Used externally as a wash or rub in paste form, for ringworm, athletes foot, infected sores, and skin diseases. Also used to stop bleeding (homeostatic). A yellow dye is obtained from the root and the smashed root smeared on the body is said to repel insects. CAUTION: Large doses are poisonous and extended internal use or use during pregnancy is not recommended.

Folklore: Goldenseal refers to the root scars from old growth which looks like the old seal or stamp used to seal envelopes. Some Native American tribes considered goldenseal a sacred herb, and used it extensively, not only for its healing powers and to stop bleeding, but as a paint or bright yellow dye and applied it to their faces, horses and weapons during ceremonial dances before going to war. It was believed by the early settlers that if they destroyed all the yellowroot the Indians would not attack because they could not paint themselves.

  • Q. Do you have any products that contain vitamin B-17? Do you have any information on it's use for treating Cancer?

  • A. Vitamin B-17, commonly known as "Amygdalin", or "Laetrile", is a natural substance that can be found in a variety of species in the Vegetable kingdom. The greatest concentration is found in the seeds of the rosaceous fruits, such as apricot kernels and other bitter nuts. Laetrile Therapy is only used by some hospitals in Mexico, which treat cancer with nutrition. These hospitals achieve nearly a 100% recovery rate with virgin cases (localised tumours/cancers that have not yet been burned up with radiation, poisoned with chemotherapy, or cut into with surgery). In thousands of cases, total regression of all cancer symptoms has been confirmed.

  • Q. My daughter is congested constantly, all year round. What herbs are good for treating allergies?

  • A. The most important thing is to keep her sinuses open. When sinuses stay closed bacteria grows, then drains slowly into the system and can cause many other health problems. The first signs of bacteria in the sinuses are earache and sorethroat.
  • Peppermint oil dabbed on a clean rag and breathed slowly or placed in an evaporator.
  • Keeping the immune system strong will prevent further complications.

  • SAMENTO IN THE PRIMARY CARE SETTING

British Naturopathic Journal, Vol. 19, No. 2, Summer 2002 issue

98% of patients being treated with rare Peruvian medicinal plant show clinical improvement By John Kule, M.D.

Recent advances in the chemical analysis of Cat's Claw have shed new light on its use as a natural therapeutic agent. Specifically, it has been found that the clinical efficacy increases as the pentacyclic oxindole alkaloid (POA) fraction increases and as the tetracyclic oxindole alkaloid (TOA) content decreases respectively. Samento (Uncaria tomentosa) is a rare form of Cat's Claw that has been found to be 100% TOA free. It is a wild crafted product of a unique Peruvian rain forest microclimate that so far has been found to be most effective in its most minimally processed form.

At a Samento Conference held May 10, 2002 in Florida, Brian Lamb, medical herbalist from Scotland, reported that 100% of the terminally ill patients he is treating with Samento are showing remarkable clinical improvement. An historical review of the scientific literature on Uncaria tomentosa was presented by Jerry Schlesser, ND, DC, CNS (bibliography available.) Professor. Henk Oswald, MD, PhD, expounded on his experience of the use of Samento in the treatment of cancer. And Michael Coyle demonstrated Samento's use as an antimicrobial agent. This paper will explore the use of Samento in the primary care setting.

All patients were seen and treated at the East Aiken Health Center in Aiken, South Carolina. The background of the patient population is diverse. Aiken is located in rural South Carolina, but has long been a winter training center for thoroughbred and standard bred racehorses. Fall, winter, and spring also see an influx of hunter/jumpers, 3-day eventers and polo players, and golfers. Local industry includes the Savannah River Nuclear Site, so the town has an unusually large engineering and managerial class.

The dosing schedule used in all cases, unless otherwise stated, was three 600mg per oral capsules of Samento twice a day for 10 days. Thereafter dosage was decreased to two 600mg capsules twice a day. Samento was taken on an empty stomach, by itself. Other supplementation (vitamins/minerals) was taken with meals. Concurrent usage of other herbs was discouraged as it was felt that other herbs might contain alkaloids with a blocking effect similar to the tetracyclic oxindole alkaloids (TOAs.)

Beginning in March 2002 and continuing to date, over 60 patients have been treated with Samento. Conditions treated include:
    • Chronic Fatigue
    • Fibromyalgia
    • Status Post Cerebrovascular Accident
    • Chronic Back Pain
    • Status Post Breast Cancer
    • Diabetes
    • Hypertension
    • Irritable Bowel
    • Candidiasis
    • Hypothyroid
    • Menopausal Syndrome
    • Pre Menstrual Syndrome
    • Peptic Ulcer Disease
    • Gastritis
    • Rheumatoid Arthritis
    • Arthritis
    • Schizophrenia
    • Asthma
    • Lyme's Disease
    • Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy
Several case studies have been selected, and were presented hopefully to illustrate the amazing scope of illnesses that are being successfully treated with Samento at our clinic.

In these cases and others, what we have consistently noted so far can be summarized as the following positive clinical findings:

  • Increased energy. This in particular has been gratifying when used with chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and depression.

  • Sense of well being/lifting of brain fog. Current studies are under way but this finding appears to be related to the anticoagulant properties of Samento. Those patients suffering from chronic cold hand and feet seem to make the most gain here. Also to be explored would be a positive effect on infertility, especially when coupled with Peruvian Maca.

  • Decreased inflammation. Here there might be a transient exacerbation of symptoms, then a marked improvement. The only patient in our clinic who has not shown improvement was one who stopped the Samento when her symptoms worsened. There was no way to get this patient to understand the concept of a healing crisis.

  • Decreasing blood pressure. Almost all of our anti-hypertension patients have been able to lower their dosage of anti-hypertension medication. None have been able to discontinue the anti-hypertension medication altogether, at least at this point in time.

  • Decreasing blood sugar. All our diabetic patients have had mild lowering of fasting blood sugars (around 10 to 20 points.)

  • Increased diuresis. All of the patients have experienced a mild diuretic effect.

    Adverse clinical findings include:

  • Lower extremity cramping. This is easily alleviated when present by either/or calcium supplementation and a good multivitamin/mineral combination.

  • Several patients have experienced healing crises. In fact, individual patients have experienced multiple "mini-crises" with continued use of Samento. No patient has required hospitalization while on Samento.

  • One patient experienced a severe immediate gastritis. The dose was lowered to 250mg each day instead of a normal starting dose of 1800mg twice a day. Within two weeks the maximum dose was tolerated. Gastrointestinal complaints have resolved. This patient's presenting complaint was chronic migraine headache. No change has been noted yet in the severity or frequency of the headaches.

  • Skin rash. Several of the patients experienced transient photosensitive skin rashes, none requiring any treatment other than time.

In conclusion, as the several case studies illustrate, Samento has proven in our clinic to be a safe natural remedy with a wide range of therapeutic efficacy. To date our patients continue to show remarkable clinical improvement. As our experience and confidence with the use of Samento grows, we are applying Samento to an expanding list of clinical illnesses.
