Aspen General Information
Aspen feeds no less than 500 species of animals, fungi, and other life-forms, and man once relied on this tree as a source of food and medicine as well. In the 19th Century naturalist Henry David Thoreau was canoeing in the Main wilderness, his Indian guide claimed to be a doctor of natural medicines and able to list a use for every plant. Thoreau stated, “I immediately tried him. He said that the inner bark of the Aspen was good for sore eyes…” Native American Indians ate the inner bark or drank the syrup as a spring tonic and energy booster. The Cree Indians (range from the Rocky Mountians to the Atlantic Ocean) boiled the bark into a tea for treating coughs. The Penobscot (Indian Nation of Main) used the liquid of steeped bark for colds. Root of aspen was combined with balsam poplar and steeped by the Chippewa (3rd largest in the U.S.A.). It was used to prevent premature births. The Algonkian (most widespread Indian Nation) used the leaves in medicine for infants, and the roots in a decoction as a general tonic. The bark of young trees was used in poultices for cuts and wounds by the Ojibwa. The Potawatomi (upper Mississippi river region) would burn the bark and mix the ashes with lard. They would apply this salve to the wounds of horses. Other Indians used the tea for expelling worms. Tea made from the roots was thought to help prevent premature childbirth. The chewed bark was applied to cuts to speed healing.

Magical, Old Lore
Use the leaves, bark or buds of this tree in ritual or spells concerning money or protection of property. Quaking Aspen has also been used in the creation of flying ointments. Quaking Aspen is said to facilitate astral projection. Plant Populus tremuloides in your garden to protect against thieves. Place leaf under tongue if you wish to become eloquent.

Aspen Uses & Scientific Evidence For
Today, Aspen is used for treating the aches and pains of arthritis and rheumatism. The bark is used to stimulate the appetite and works well as a tonic for treating anorexia and other debilitating conditions. The bark is also used in treating diarrhea, the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and urinary tract infections. Aspen bark contains salicin and populin, which have fever reducing, pain-relieving, and anti-inflammatory properties similar to aspirin. Poplar also contains zinc, which some researchers feel may account for its beneficial effects on the urinary system. It is also used as a diuretic and as a treatment for gonorrhea. One of the wonderful things this has been helpful for is menstrual cramps.

Aspen Dosage Information
Aspen comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. To make a decoction, take 1-2 teaspoonfuls of dried bark in 1 cup of boiling water. Drink 3 cups a day. To stimulate the appetite, drink 30 minutes before meals. To use the tincture, take 2-4 ml 3 times a day. As an Extract: ¼ to 1 teaspoon 3 times a day, as direct by Health Care Professional. Always take with plenty of juice or with water at mealtime, unless instructed otherwise.

Aspen Safety & Interaction Information
Aspen is generally regarded as safe; however, since aspirin is a risk for birth defects in the early stages of pregnancy, the salicin in Aspen bark may pose the same risks, so it is advised that pregnant women should use this herb only under the supervision of their physician. Not for use in children under the age of sixteen as salicin could increase the risk of Reye’s syndrome.
