Artichoke General Information
The Artichoke / Globe Artichoke were originally harvested in Naples around the middle of the 15th Century. It has been said that Catherine de Medici (Queen of France) introduced it to France in the 16th Century. The Dutch are responsible for England knowing about the Artichoke, where they were growing in Henry VIII’s garden at Newhall in 1530. The United States did not see them until the 19th Century and that was by the French immigrants to Louisiana. The Spanish immigrants introduced the Artichoke to California around the same time period. The name appears to have started with the Arabic ardi shauk (“ground thorn”), through the Italian, articiocco. Though the Artichoke was not spread through Europe until the 15th Century, the ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians used the Artichoke for food and medicine.
