Arnica General Information
Arnica has a history of folk medicine use in many locations, including North America, Germany, and Russian. The herb has been used in folk remedies since the sixteenth century. Arnica is an aromatic plant, native to Alpine slopes in mountainous regions around the world. It has golden yellow flowers that are daisy-like in appearance. This plant was discovered as a European folk remedy by shepherds who pastured their sheep in the mountains. When the sheep fell and bruised themselves they nibbled on the leaves of the plant and were said to heal quickly from their fall. Arnica grows in rocky and mountainous areas where people and animals are most likely to fall and bruise themselves. In the North American colonies it was used as a paint for chilblains when the skin was broken. Arnica has anti-inflammatory properties. A North American indigenous tribe, the Cataulsa, prepared a tea from Arnica roots to ease back pains. The German writer Goethe credited arnica with saving his life by bringing down a persistent high fever. Arnica preparations are used extensively in Russia. Folk use there includes external treatment of wounds, black eye, sprains, and contusions.

Arnica Uses & Scientific Evidence For
Today Arnica Montana is used primarily to relieve the aftereffects of falls, blows, sports injuries and overexertion. The herb is known by some as, "tumbler's cure all," reflecting this common medicinal use. Homeopathic and naturopathic practitioners use it for severe sprains and wounds and shock. Athletes, coaches, and trainers use it to treat a variety of sports injuries. Arnica relieves pain, swelling and stiffness, and heals bruises caused by physical trauma. It also works well for treating rheumatic joints, osteoarthritis, swollen feet, leg ulcers, or herpes sores. Arnica is also used on irritated nasal passages and lips. This herb increases resistance to infection, including listeria and salmonella, and is used for reducing fevers, stimulating circulation, and reabsorbing internal bleeding. A compress of Arnica tea can be placed on the stomach to relieve abdominal pains. The Arnica Oil when used externally is extremely beneficial for: acne, bruises, hair loss if rubbed on scalp, inflammation from insect bites, muscle aches, rheumatic pain, sprains, strained or pulled muscles, superficial phlebitis, tendon strain, swelling due to fractures and wound healing if not on broken skin. When an Arnica compress is applied to an injury, including broken bones, it can have some amazing healing results.
Arnica is used today in Modern Medicine. There are surgeons who use Arnica after surgery to help the patient. Arnica helps to lower the bruising and aches that happens after surgery. Arnica has been used by Plastic Surgeons for some time and is now being used by other surgeons as well.

Arnica Dosage Information
Arnica can come in various forms and is an ingredient in other products. This plant is seldom used internally because of its irritant effect on the stomach, but when taken internally it promotes healing of damaged tissues and helps control bleeding. For external use, apply Arnica to affected area immediately after over-exercising or recovering a minor injury to ward off pain, stiffness, and bruising. When combined with calendula, this herb works well for treating skin rashes and other inflammatory skin problems. Repeated applications may produce severe inflammation so it is best to use only when necessary. If your skin becomes inflamed, discontinue until inflammation is gone.
