Antioxidants General Information
The definition of Antioxidants is, a substance, such as Vitamin E, C or Beta Carotene, thought to protect body cells from the damaging effects of oxidation. Many herbs and medicinal plants are good natural sources of antioxidants. These include carrots, tomatoes, yams, leafy greens, blueberries, bilberries, ginkgo biloba, garlic, and green tea, to name a few. Antioxidants are chemical compounds that can bind to free oxygen radicals preventing these radicals from damaging healthy cells. Free radicals are naturally produced in the body through the normal metabolism of amino acids and fats. These free radicals can freely react with and destroy healthy cells. They can bind to and change the structure of DNA, leading to mutations and eventually to cancer. Besides cancer, this oxidative stress on the cells can lead to heart, eye, and neurological diseases.

Antioxidants Uses and Scientific Evidence For
Early nutrition researchers focused on the use of antioxidants for preventing the oxidation of unsaturated fats, the cause of rancidity. Simply placing the fat in a closed glass container with oxygen and observing the rate of oxygen consumption could measure antioxidant activity. However, it was the identification of Vitamins A, C, and E as antioxidants that revolutionized the field and led to the realization of the importance of antioxidants in biology. Preliminary studies have suggested that antioxidants are useful in a number of ways in regards to cancer. For instance, they may improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy, decrease side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and prevent some types of cancer.
In 2004, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) released a new fact sheet concerning cancer prevention and antioxidants. Fruits and vegetables are high in anti-oxidants and evidence continued to support the role of vitamins C, E, and A, as well as lycopene and beta-carotene in helping to prevent cancer.
By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, April 3, 2007, abstracted from “Free radical scavengers vitamins A, C, and E plus magnesium reduce noise trauma” printed online in Free Radical Biology and Medicine. The researchers found that noise-induced deficits were “significantly smaller” only in the group given both antioxidants and magnesium. They found that while vitamins A, C, and E scavenged free the radicals produced by noise exposure, magnesium played a very important role by preventing the blood vessel constriction normally seen after noise exposure. All those synergistic effects together produced the significant result.
In addition to finding that the antioxidant intervention was “safe and effective”, the researchers concluded that this study “provides a compelling rationale for human trials in which free radical scavengers are used to eliminate this single major cause of acquired hearing loss.”

Antioxidants Dosage Information
Although controversy will surround the topic of supplemental antioxidants for some time, there is little if any controversy those dietary levels of antioxidants are useful in preventing cancer. Because of this evidence, the American Cancer Society suggests five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Follow the directions on supplements for best results.

Antioxidants Safety and Interactions Information
Some supplements that carry antioxidants can have side effects. Vitamin C may interfere with some laboratory tests. Vitamin A can be toxic in high doses of more that 15,000 IU per day. High doses of Vitamin A can lead to headaches. Vitamin E can be dangerous in very high doses
