General Anal Fissure Information
An anal fissure is an elongated split in the rectum close to the anal sphincter causing pain during bowel movements. Anal fissures are common, especially in middle age, but they can also appear in children. Possible Causes of Anal Fissure

The tissue at the site of the split may also bleed. Repeated diarrhea can also cause an anal fissure. Trauma during childbirth is another common cause of anal fissures.

Possible Symptoms of Anal Fissure
An anal fissure causes a sharp stinging or burning pain in the anus during bowel movements. The pain usually stops after the bowel movement, but in some cases, the pain lingers for hours. Fissures may itch; they may also bleed. The blood is separate from the stool. Blood in the stool can indicate a serious condition, like colon cancer, and should be reported to a doctor immediately.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Anal Fissure
Soak in a warm, shallow bath several times a day. Wash the anal area gently with cotton cloths instead of toilet paper. Don't scratch the affected areas. Use a gental laxative when needed. Increase fiber in the diet. Drink plenty of water to keep the stools soft and easy to pass.
