Aloe Vera General Information
Since prehistoric times, the succulent Aloe plant has been used for the treatment of burns, wound infections, and other skin problems. This time honored trick remains useful today. All you have to do is cut off a leaf at its base, slice it open length wise, and apply as much gel as you want directly to your burn or cut. The thick gel will dry to form a natural bandage. Aloe has played a significant medicinal role for thousands of years. Egyptians, Assyrians, and Mediterranean peoples used the dried latex prmarily, but also the gel. In Egypt, Aloe was called "The Plant of Immortality" and was given as an offering at the funerals of Pharohs and used in the baths of Egyptian queens, Nefertiti and Cleopatra. Alexander the Great conquered Socotra Island, reportedly at the request of Aristotle, just to obtain Aloe. In the first century, the Greek physician Dioscorides used Aloe for mouth infections, sores, wounds and as a purgative. In the 17th century, records show that the East India Company frequently purchased Aloe from the king of Socotra. Today, Egyptians still hang an Aloe plant over the door of a new house to provide a long and fruitful life for its occupants. Chinese medicine uses Aloe to treat fungal diseases. Ayurvedic medicine uses it for stomach tumors, constipation, colic, skin disorders, amenorrhea, worm infestation , and infections. South Africa uses if for eye inflammations and syphilis. The most common uses of Aloe refer to the gel inside its cactus-like leaves.
