Allspice General Information
Allspice is the dried berry of the pimento, which is collected when it has reached full size but is not yet ripe, though there are uses for the ripe plant. Allspice grows in the West Indies, South America, Central America, and Mexico. It's name comes from the particular combination of aromas in its fruit, a mix of the tastes of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg with just a little peppery heat. In Jamaica it is sometimes used as a substitute for tobacco. Allspice gets its name from the berry’s taste, which has been described as a combination of cinnamon, pepper, cloves, and Juniper berries. It is aromatic, carminative, (expelling gas from the stomach or intestines so as to relieve flatulence or abdominal pain) and a stimulant. Other parts of the pimento can be used medicinally as well.

History and Habitat of Allspice
Allspice is not a mixture of spices as some believe, but is obtained from a very tall plant native to Jamaica. One of the most famous people in America discovered Allspice, Christopher Columbus. He discovered Allspice in the Caribbean. Although he was seeking pepper, he had never actually seen real pepper and thought Allspice was it. He brought the Allspice back to Spain, where it received the name "pimientia," which is Spanish for pepper. The English name is pimento, occasionally used in the spice trade today. Before World War II, Allspice was more widely used than it is nowadays. During the war, many trees producing Allspice were cut, and production never fully recovered. The flowers appear in June, July and August and are quickly succeeded by the berries. A tropical evergreen tree, growing 22-43 ft. in height. It has smooth gray bark, with oblong, glossy leaves, dark green and glossy, up to 6 in long. It has small white flowers appearing in mid summer followed by green berries that turn purple when ripe. Trees are planted about 30 ft apart, allowing room for a full canopy of fruit-bearing branches. Fruit starts to develop after 3-5 years, and becomes full-bearing after 20 years. These plantations are not called orchards, but "walks" and in the summer, when whole trees are blanketed in aromatic flowers, the 'pimento walk' is a stroll through the grounds.

Allspice Uses & Scientific Evidence For
Allspice fruits contain 2 to 5% essential oil (depending on how they are harvested). The main components of the essential oil are eugenol, eugenol methyl ether, myrcene, 1.8-cineol, and alpha-phellandrene (all scientific names). The eugenol content of essential oil of Jamaican Allspice is 65 to 90%. When used as an ointment or a bath additive, Allspice is said to have some anesthetic effects. This berry is also used for rheumatism and neuralgia. Pimento water and oil of pimento are helpful for indigestion or flatulence, and the oil is used for hysteria. Taken with a laxative, pimento oil reduces griping (to cause pinching and spasmodic pain in the bowels). the essential oil in the leaf or the ground spice is sufficient to neutralize some water borne infections, notably Shigellosis (type of food poisoning). Allspice is used for different things by different people. The main medicinally used reasons are as follows:

  • Brain and Nervous System Conditions -the essential oil is used for histera conditions
  • Gastrointestinal Conditions -diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatulence (gas/wind)
  • Orally-mouthwash to freshen breath, as a paste to soothe and relieve toothache
  • Essential Oil -flatulence, indigestion, gripe
  • Externally -Allspice has a local anesthetic effect and is used as a salve for neuralgia and rheumatism
Allspice is also added to curry powder, mulled wine, soaps for the perfume, potpourri, and as a spice. Some might say that is medicinal, that choice is yours.
