General Attention Deficit Disorder / ADD / ADHD Information
The terms “attention deficit disorder” (ADD) and “attention deficit hyperactivity disorder” (ADHD) refer to a group of symptoms that cause problems at home, at school, on the job and in social situations. Most experts use the terms ADD and ADHD interchangeably. ADD/ADHD is not a learning disability; it is recognized as a specific neurological difference for which there is no accepted cure. ADD/ADHD begins in early childhood and can continue through adulthood if not treated. People who suffer from ADD/ADHD may be at higher risk for developing depression, poor self-esteem, frail social relationships and lifelong difficulties in school and in the workplace. There may also be a close relationship between general anxiety
disorders and ADD/ADHD. With proper intervention, behavioral adjustments and treatment, children and adults with ADD/ADHD can learn tools to help them focus and calm down.

Possible Causes of Attention Deficit Disorder / ADD / ADHD
The exact cause of ADD/ADHD is not known, but experts believe that genetics play a large role in the development of the condition. At least 25 percent of children with
ADD/ADHD have another close relative with the disorder. No specific gene has been linked to the disorder, but brain structure, the function of chemicals in the brain that
regulate attention, and abnormal function of the prefrontal cortical lobe are thought to be related to the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. Diet, food allergies, severe anemia, lead
poisoning and psychological factors, such as depression, adjustment problems, lack of sleep, family stress, anxiety and abuse, may also contribute to behavior consistent with
ADD/ADHD.

Possible Symptoms and Complications of Attention Deficit Disorder / ADD / ADHD
Symptoms of ADD/ADHD include inability to sit still; short attention span; extreme distractibility; procrastination; forgetfulness; easily excited; difficulty organizing or
finishing tasks; problems adapting to new situations; impatience; emotional instability; lack of goals; temper tantrums; talking too much; lack of concentration; disruptive in the classroom or at work; disorganized thoughts; trouble making and keeping friends; and a tendency to disturb others.
The major complication of ADD/ADHD is failure at work and/or school.
A pediatric psychologist and/or a specialist in educational diagnostic testing should evaluate most children who are suspected of having ADD/ADHD. In order for a child to be considered to have true ADD/ADHD, the impulsiveness, poor attention span, excitability and/or hyperactivity must be present from before age seven and should have lasted more than six months. The symptoms also should be apparent in two or more settings, such as school, home, or social situations. Anxiety disorders are commonly misdiagnosed as ADD, so second opinions are suggested.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Attention Deficit Disorder / ADD / ADHD
There is no way to prevent ADD/ADHD, but avoiding cigarettes, alcohol and drugs during pregnancy can help keep a child from developing behaviors similar to ADD/ADHD. Having good prenatal care, establishing behavior limits, teaching acceptable social skills and reading to a child everyday can help ward off or lessen learning and attention problems. Instead of punishing negative behavior, parents should actively encourage positive behavior by giving extra attention to their children by complimenting, hugging and using rewards when they are “good”. Experts advise keeping a child with ADD/ADHD on a regular schedule for mealtimes, bath time, bedtime and all extracurricular activities, as these, and most children thrive on a predictable routine. Parents of children with ADD/ADHD must also realize that raising a child with this
disorder can take its toll on them both emotionally and physically. These parents must take care of themselves and establish a good, reliable support system to help them
weather the difficult times.
